Dear Steve,

I am one of your many cousins that has contacted you in the past few months. I appreciate all the work you are doing with the Coker family updates.I thought whebn I saw your emails today that I would finally repay you in some small way.

To reacquaint you, I descend from your Susan Buddin's sister, Emma Buddin. I have tried many times to get this file off to you, but then I started adding Cokers, Buddins, and the like from the Meade Frierson book, but then I put it aside to work on another line. I am sort of an ADD/ADHD researcher. :) I have several plates spinning at one time. To make matters worse, my family tree looks in the words of another cousin, "like a topiary"! I have several lines which keep crossing and meeting up again and again.Unfortunately, I can only dabble in this mess on the weekends. I teach third grade, and I can't ever find any time to get caught up during the week.

I did a look up for a lady on the REARDONS today( her line involved the FRIERSONS), but this is all I have for our bunch. I might try for a few hours tomorrow to sit down again and look for a possible connection. Do you know anything on our McIntosh or Reardon lines in Williamsburg County? I see these names in several cemetery surveys I have for that area, also.

If you see anything that needs correction, please let me know. I included everyone down to me. It is in no way complete, and I will need to continue to add names and dates and make corrections. If you would like, I can send you a back up of my file (since I see you use FTM). I have done that with some other cousins, and we can add the files so much easier. Just let me know.

I have included the letters from Martha Jane Buddin Gamble to Emma. There is mention of Susan. I am not sure if the Martha and William Gamble I found at New Zion are the same. If you know of any of Martha's descendents and family, please let me know. She mentions several children in both ofher letters.

Thanks for your help.

Sincerely, Fran Richardson Lexington, SC Descendants of John Buddin I From Fran Richardson (24 Jan 1998)

We believe that Emma remarried a Byrd, but we have no records as yet to prove this marriage. We believe that there are children from this second union, also. -notes of Fran Richardson, Lexington, SC

NOTE: These are transcripts of the letters of Emma Buddin. The original letters are in the possession of Iris Wall Richardson, great- granddaughter of Harriet Emma Buddin. Both letters were given to her by her paternal grandmother, Frances "Fannie" Elizabeth Chandler Wall.

This first letter is transcribed from a letter written to Emma Buddin Chandler. The letter was written by her sister, Martha J. Gamble:

Aug.10th 1864

South Carolina Clarendon County

Dear Emma,

I embrace this opportunity to write you a few lines again this being the third time I have written without receiving a line from you. This leaves us all well. Mah has been here three or four weeks but went to Levy's Friday . She will stay there 5 or 6 weeks as sister Ann will have a call for her about the first of October. Frances has a son three months old. She has named him George Myers. Mah was anxious to hear from you before she left. She got Budder to write to you when she was there and expected an answer. She says to tell you that Mary says she intends to go and see you if she lives. Budder and Mary has been down to see us all two weeks ago. Billy is here now. Mah sends her love to you and family also Mrs. Garner and family and says tell Mrs. Garner that she has made her a feathered quilt and that it is generally admired. Emma, you ought to write to Mah. She is always so anxious to hear from you and your children. She requested me if I heard any thing from you to be sure to me word. Jimmy and Fanny seem to be almost her idols. Mah went and staid (sic) 2 days and nights with Nelson and Drusilla. They are getting on finely. Tell Brother George that Mr. Gamble has a splendid crop. I think he has the best prospect of cotton has ever had. Mr. Gamble and David joins me in sending their respects to you all. May this reach you soon and find all enjoying good health. I remain your affectionate sister,

Martha J. Gamble

Write soon.

PLEASE NOTE: Martha's original letter is a bit faded and has little punctuation which leaves it difficult to read. I have edited the letter in this regard.

The second letter has been transcribed from a much later letter to Emma Buddin Chandler written to her by her sister, Martha J. Gamble:

June 5th, 1874

South Carolina Clarendon County

Frances was well about three weeks ago Myers, family were well last Sunday Nelson and Drusilla are getting along pretty well. I saw Aunt Eliza two weeks ago. She was well. Flavilla's health is poor. I think she is under medical treatment now. Ma, they have Mr. Crawford a young man from Charleston to preach at Midway and Bethel the next four months. He has only preached twice yet. I have quilted both my quilts since you left. Emma, I have a splendid garden have been using nicely headed cabbage for three weeks past. Our Irish potatoes are fine ,also. Mr. Gamble has a pretty fair crop considering the cold spring. Emma, I would like very much to see your fine boy. Can't you come with Ma when she comes and let us all see you once more. I want you to write us as soon as you get this and let us know hear from you and family and Ma I want to know when she is coming over again. Beckey sends her respects to you and Ma.

More About HARRIET EMMA BUDDIN: Sources: Rett Floyd, Turbeville, SC Notes for SAMUEL MALLORY CHANDLER: Samuel Mallory Chandler is said to have died at Petersburg in 1864. Family lore says that he took a minie ball in the thigh. He wrote to his young wife, Emma, from a hospital. Emma received Mallory's letter and was on her way to see him when she received news that he had died. Unfortunately, there are few burial records in Petersburg. The numbers of casualties from the battles in and around the city were so great, many soldiers were buried in mass, unmarked graves around the old church in Petersburg.

My mother,Iris Wall Richardson, says that her grandmother, Fannie Chandler Wall, Mallory and Emma's daughter, showed her the letter once. We have not found the letter again.

She married (2) ALEXANDER GLENN WALL December 21, 1887 in Williamsburg County, SC, son of WILLIAM WALL and MARTHA BROCKINGTON.

Notes for FRANCES ELIZABETH CHANDLER: Frances Elizabeth "Fannie" Chandler was a petite woman with a kind, loving heart according to her granddaughters, Iris Wall Richardson and Marian Wall Dye.

Francis Glenn "Frankie" Wall used to to tell that when the family still lived in Olanta in the late 1910's when he and James were very young, their grandmother Fannie used to scoop the two boys up at the same time, hugging them, and saying "My boys!" Fannie knew that life with two young boys was sometimes hard on Garndmama, and so the boys were welcomed often to their grandparents' house which was next door.

Mama also says that Fannie used to feel of the fabric between her forefinger and thumb of clothes as she was browsing.

Here is a clipping found in my grandparents' possesions:

Notes for ALEXANDER GLENN WALL: Alexander Glenn Wall is remembered as being very loving but "stern if you weren't on your best behavior," according to Marian Wall Dye, his granddaughter.

A.G. Wall was called Pa by his grandchildren. My mother, Iris Wall Richardson, says that he called her "Baby" as she was the youngest of her family.

Mama and Frankie used to say that Pa would practice reading his Sunday School lessons on the porch of his home in Olanta, and they can remember when Pa said "And Jonah swallowed the whale..." They enjoyed this story for many years.

A.G. Wall lived on Route I in Olanta, SC. His farm consisted of 70 acres which lay I mile north of Olanta on Highway 341 in the Motts Ward of Florence County. The land was bounded on the north by the property of J.L. Connor, east by J. N. Jordan, south by J.P. Truluck, and west by the Est. S(amuel) R. Chandler, according to a 1933 Crop Mortgage document of the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Funeral services were held at the home of his son, William Mallory Wall on Pinckney Street in Timmonsville, SC on October 4, 1944. The service was lead by the Reverend John Clark and the Reverend W.R. Poindexter. He was buried in the church cemetery at Bethel Baptist Church in Olanta, SC. 6 5 4 3 2 1 23. WILLIAM MALLORY WALL (FRANCES ELIZABETH CHANDLER, HARRIET EMMA BUDDIN, WILLIAM , JOHN , JOHN ) was born August 27, 1890 in Williamsburg County, SC, and died October 15, 1968 in Timmonsville, SC. He married LAURA KATHERINE KEELS June 17, 1914 in Olanta, Florence County, South Carolina, daughter of WILLIAM KEELS and EFFIE THOMPSON.

Notes for WILLIAM MALLORY WALL: William Wall, my grandfather, was a rural mail carrier for many years. That is one way that he carried on the courtship with my grandmother, Laura Katherine Keels. The two of them would see each other in the small town of Olanta, but then, they wrote to each other almost daily. She would try to write to him before he came by for the mail, and people knew that they were crazy about each other.

One of the first things that I found when I began to clean and pack up my grandparents' house in Timmonsville after my Uncle Frankie's death in 1996 were these letters. The first I found were in her dresser tied with a faded bit of color ribbon. I sat down and read the words. These were the words of a young girl who had said something foolish and in jest, and she had hurt his feelings. Hadn't we all done something similar at some point when we were young? Then, a few days later, I found his letters from her. He had stored the letters carefully in several boxes, and he kept each one neatly folded in its place. There were letters from several years up until the month of their wedding. I spent a day or two reading and sorting and rereading until the story unfolded like a book. I was even a bit disappointed for myself when I realized that there would be no more letters, but I was happy for them.

I later told people that I had read the letters, and some people felt I shouldn't have because I might have read something scandalous or indecent. I guess that is the change of times. I felt as if the letters were left there as a present for those of us left behind. Those letters helped me to meet a young girl who was full of life and love. I had the chance to meet and know my grandprents all over again. -notes of Fran Richardson, Lexington, SC.

My granddaddy is the source of a story that has brought tears to the eyes of the family for years. It seems that the car was being towed, and chains were being used to haul it. Granddaddy was wearing a hat as he usually did, and when the time came to pull, the poor man had the misfortune to be standing on the chain. Witnesses (such as Frankie) say that Granddaddy did a complete standing flip, and he landed with his hat still on his head! -notes of Fran Richardson, Lexington, SC.

Granddaddy's favorite Bible verse was the 23rd Psalm. I have a Daily Devotion book of his which I read from now. His stewardship to his church and his faith were two things which prompted my mother, Iris Wall Richardson to write the following characterization of him in the late 1950's for a Baptist biography: "W. M. Wall (1890-) is, in the words of a former pastor, a name synonymous with the Timmonsville (SC) Baptist Church. Any thought of it brings to him to mind because of the engrossing part it has played in his life.

His home life was strong with the Baptist influence--his father being a devout layman and teacher. At the early age of twenty-one, when most young people are starting out teaching Sunday School class, he had already advance to being superintendent of the Olanta (SC) Sunday School. At twenty-five, he became a deacon in Olanta, and when he moved to Timmonsville (1922), he continued in this capacityuntil he was made an active Life deacon, a culimination of his forty years as a deacon. The W.M. Wall Training Union of which he is a contributing member bears his name in his home church. Another notable stewradship is his thirty-year service as a most efficient clerk, and in his handwritng is a thirty-year history of the church.

His home is a haven of welcome for all pastors, returning and present, and he is known as the pastor's friend.

He accompanied his former pastor on a trip to the Baptist World Alliance (Atlanta, 1939) and was sent as a messenger with another pastor to the Southern baptist Convention (Miami, 1956). Several of his vacations have been spent at the Ridgecrest Baptist Assembly, and for thirty-five years, he has seldomly missed the joy he gets from attending his associational meetings as a messenger from his church.

A letter carrier for over forty years, he carried his religion into his work, and he was known as one of the most accomodating carriers and as afriend of patrons both white and colored.

In so many words, he has been living a full Christian life--mostly because he has given so much of his life and time to his church."William Wall, my grandfather, was a rural mail carrier for many years. That is one way that he carried on the courtship with my grandmother, Laura Katherine Keels. She was their eighth child and fourth daughter and the youngest child. Grandmama always said that her mother was taken ill and died while she was a baby. Effie Thompson Keels died within a year of Grandmama's birth on December 20, 1890. According to Roy Chandler of Columbia, after the funeral of Effie Thompson Keles, Grandmama was taken home by her aunt and uncle, Caroline Thompson and Samuel Chandler of Olanta. She would grow up in the Olanta community in their home.

Roy Chandler said that Grandmama refused to come out and in fact, hid from William J. Keels when he came to see her in Olanta. Once Grandmama said that her father begged for her to come home with him, but the Chandlers refused. Grandmama told us that when her father came, he hugged her and held her close and told her she would always be Effie's baby. In the end, she was left to be raised by her aunt and uncle.

Even by Roy's accounts, his grandfather,Sam Chandler, could be very stern and was a strong disciplanarian. Perhaps then it is understandable that Grandmama's memories of her life at the Chandlers did not paint a happy picture. She did not speak of any unpleasantness or unhappiness during her childhood until she was approaching her 100th birthday.

Education and learning were important to my grandmother. That she was a charter member on the Study Club of Timmonsville is indeed a testament to this fact. When the club was first being organized, she was invited to join. The assumption was made that she must be college-educated because she grew up at the Sam Chandlers. Grandmama told us that she was not given the opportunity to attend college, and I believe that for that reason, she saw to it that her own children and grandchildren were given the chance to have a college education. She remained a person who enjoyed learning throughout her life and remained a member of the Study Club until her death.

Laura Keels met and married another Olanta resident, William Mallory "Will" Wall who was a rural mail carrier. According to a story in the Florence Morning News, she met him at a party, and he offered to drive her home in his buggy. They carried on a courtship through the mail for several years after that meeting. They were married in the Presbyterian Church which her grandfather, Archibald Thompson, had helped to found. After, their marriage, she joined the Bethel Baptist Church in Olanta which Granddaddy's family had attended for several generations and also been laid to rest in the church cemetery.

Laura Keels Wall was a wonderful. thoughtful, loving, and caring grandmother. If you were to look up the word grandmother, you would see her picture. As my cousin, Tina Wall Spriggs, has said, "Our grandparents were near to perfection."

I spent many summers with my grandmother at her home in Timmonsville. I went just about everywhere she did. She was a busy and active woman until an accidental fall caused her to break her hip at age 95. Until that time, she ran a household, went grocery shopping, attended church on Sundays twice and once on Wednesdays, and she continued to attend the many functions of the organizations to which she belonged.

The word "homemaker" may not seem to sum up my grandmother's lifelong work, but it does in some ways best describe her life's ambition: to create a comfortable and loving home. Visiting preachers to the First Baptist Church in Timmonsville were generally invited for a meal in her home. She spent many hours cooking and baking. Her kitchen and her meals were truly the heart of her home. For my birthday, she always baked a yellow cake with chocolate frosting for me despite the fact that I always had a "store-bought" cake, also. This homemade cake was a gesture of her love and affection.

I was lucky enough to live close enough that I was able to be around my grandmother a great deal as I grew up. My parents and I spent nearly every holiday with her, but in the summer months, I generally went on my own for an extended visit in the month of July and August. In fact, I once stayed with her unitl the Sunday before school started on Monday!

I can remember going to visit her in the summer. I was usually carried by Daddy to the Stateburg Grill near Sumter, and Frankie and Grandmama would meet us there. I would have a very good life when I was there. I was absolutely spoiled rotten. I always slept in Grandmama's bed, and I remember that she always read her Bible each and every night no matter how tired she was. She always was a woman of great faith. She would rise early to fix Frankie's breakfast, and then a few hours later, I would rise. She always insisted that I wash my face and hands, brush my teeth, and comb my hair because her Pa (Sam Chandler) had always required that of his children. Breakfast would be hot cocoa, grits with margarine, eggs, bacon, and toast sprinkled with parmesan cheese. She would bring to me on a tray so I could sit with her and watch "The Price is Right." This was our morning routine. I was treated like a queen.

After breakfast, I would get dressed to go to the pool. Unless we had a morning or early afternoon appointment, I spent the hours between 10:00 and 12:00 at the pool. It was my Grandmama who had insisted on private swimming lessons after I had nearly drowned in the pond behind our house. She would wake me early, and we would walk to the pool. She sat patiently and watched my lessons. Then, she would watch as I stayed after my lessons to swim with the other children.Later, she would allow me to walk with Becky Jane Waitt , the preacher's daughter. I spent many happy days at the pool. I went many places with my grandmother that an eight-year old child would not neccessarily be invited to otherwise. Because she was so active in so many organizations, I attended many meetings of "the Circle" and "the Study Club." I was always promised refreshments afterwards. Grandmama once said that she "liked to have died" because we went to a meeting, and when the food arrived after the program, I piped up with, "I thought we were going to have cheeseburgers!" I have no recollection of doing this myself!

If she did not have a special engagement, our daily routine seemd to be centered around food. Grandmama cooked roasts, fried chicken, rice wirh gravy, peas, baked cakes, and made desserts for the midday meal. She cooked enough for our lunch to also be our supper. In the summertime, we had fresh, sliced tomatoes and fresh vegetables from the garden which she and Frankie tended. In her garden, she grew peppers, eggplants, corn, Kentucky Wonder beans, peas, and okra. We ate at the kitchen table, and the top of the table was covered with other things such as homemade pickles and fried cornbread. No one left the table hungry.

One of Grandmama's favorite expressions was "Let's be easy and quiet." She used that one a lot when I was still talking or playing in the afternoons when she was ready to settle down for a few minutes. After she cleaned the kitchen after the noon meal, we were to lie down for a few minutes. I saw no reason for stopping to rest, and this was a habit I never adopted from her. This was a routine which she followed for many years, and this habit may be yet another one of her secrets to living such a long and productive life!

Grandmama who allowed me to be a true child. She would fuss at Uncle Frankie if he called me down for being loud and rowdy. I truly believe she enjoyed being around children. Her face was never stern, and she was never disapproving. In most of my memories of her, she is laughing and smiling.

I know that I was indeed a lucky child to have been so blessed to have known a person such as Laura Katherine Keels Wall.

Marriage Notes for WILLIAM WALL and LAURA KEELS: Laura Katherine Keels and William Mallory Wall were married at the First Presbyterian Church in Olanta on June 14, 1912. Laura grew up in the Presbyterian church having been brought up by her uncle and aunt, Sam and Caroline Thompson Chandler who along with most of her Thompson kin attended that same church.

Notes for FRANCIS GLENN WALL: Uncle Frankie made his home in Timmonsville at the home of his parents, Laura Katherine Keels and Wiliam Mallory Wall, for most of his 80 years.

Frankie was born in Olanta, and he made it nearly on the heels of his older brother, James. James must not have cared too much about being bumped into second place. He used to sit in a little rocker and watch baby Frankie sleeping in the crib, and when he was sure no one would catch him, he would slip over to the crib and bite the new baby! This bit of sibling rivalry may have continued for many years on and off. When they were teenagers, Mama can remember the two boys fighting so hard that she thought surely they would kill one another before it stopped. The two boys were as close as twins for the most part, and Frankie looked up to his big brother. -memories of Fran Richardson, niece and namesake of Franke Wall

7 6 5 4 3 2 1 32. IRIS ELIZABETH WALL (WILLIAM MALLORY , FRANCES ELIZABETH CHANDLER, HARRIET EMMA BUDDIN, WILLIAM , JOHN , JOHN ) was born June 01, 1922 in Timmonsville, SC. She married DONALD LEE RICHARDSON April 21, 1956 in Timmonsville, SC, son of BENNIE RICHARDSON and DOVIE COOPER.

Notes for IRIS ELIZABETH WALL: Iris Elizabeth Wall was born on June 1, 1922 at home in Timmonsville, SC to William Mallory and Laura Keels Wall. She was their third child and first daughter. She was named for the goddess of the rainbow, Iris. Her mother also had a love for gardening and always had purple bearded irises in her flower garden.

Mama attended the public schools in Timmonsville. The elementary school she attended was across the street from her home. She graduated as valedictorian from her 1939 Timmonsville High School class. The caption next to her senior photo reads, " Thought is deeper than all speech." She was a member of the school's Beta Club, and she was voted both Most Literary and Most original in her senior class, according to the yearbook, The Purple and Gold of Timmonsville High School published in May 1939.

One of the first stories of my mother's arrival is about her brother, Frankie. Frankie had been the baby for several years then. He tried to pick up the new baby, and he dropped his new sister on her head. She never forgot it.

Mama must have been a bit of a rascal. My grandparents had to install a little gate across the front porch so that she could not get out on her own when she was a little tyke. A man came and installed the gate, and as soon as she saw it, Mama hopped over the gate. That was the end of the gate.

Mama also liked to be up and about at night. She liked to go up the street to the street to the Fairey's house on the corner and gather up the milk bottles. She did this stunt several times when Grandmama came up with a plan. She put a sheet over herself like a ghost and then waited in the yard for her daughter's return. When Mama came happily back from her little excursion, she said to the draped figure, "I believe that's Mama!" Foiled again!

Uncle Frankie used to play practical jokes on his little sister, and Mama was always so gullible. He would tell her to look into the Victrola for the little people inside. When she would put her face down to peer in at the tiny folks, Frankie would crank up the Victrola and scare her to death! He also tried this same trick with the car horn. "Do you see that little man in there?" he would ask Mama. SHe fell for his tricks every time!

- from stories told by Iris Wall Richardson to her daughter, Frances Catherine Richardson Iris Elizabeth Wall Richardson, my mother, was named for the irises which were blooming in her mother's garden that early June of 1922. She was born in Timmonsville. Later, the family would build a new house on Pinckney Street.

Notes for DONALD LEE RICHARDSON: Donald Lee Richardson was born July 14, 1933 in his parents' home in the town of Randleman, NC. He was the fifth child and the fourth son born to Bennie Duckery and Dovie Cooper Richardson. His older siblings were Tom, Teen, and Colleen. His older brother, John, had died in infancy at the age of two a year or so before his birth.

At the time of his birth, the family lived in town. The house the family lived in had a main house and a kitchen that was separate from this main house as many old houses did then in case of fire. When Daddy was about seven, my father's parents and the family moved "to the country."

When my father was born, he devloped Bell's Palsy, a muscular disease. He developed a high fever which caused his face to contort and pull to one side. My Aunt Ruth remembered once that he was in a cradle outside under the trees, and the baby's mouth was almost to one ear. As a result, Daddy has always had an inch or so differnece in the length of his legs, and for many years, he wore a wedge in his shoe. He has also always had an eyebrow that doesn't lift.

Daddy shared a bed with his older brothers, Tom and Teen, when he was very young. They probably best remember this time because they generally slept in a wet bed!

When Daddy was about two, his older half-brother , Bruce, broke his leg. Bruce was staying in bed in the separate cook-house so that my Grandmama could take care of him. To torment him, Daddy crawled onto to the infirmed Bruce's chest and said "I'm gonna pee on you!" By the time Bruce had called for help and my grandmother had arrived, of course, Daddy had left the scene of the crime.

I can remember a lot of Daddy's stories when he was a child. It seems that a lot of them ended up with my Grandmama chasing him up a tree. She used to wait him out as much as she could. After she told him to come down, he would always tell her "No. 'Cause you're gonna whip me." She didn't promise him otherwise. One night, he hid in the barn to avoid a whipping for something he had done.

Some of his punishments were surely justified. Once Daddy came home to announce that someone had caught a neighbor's field on fire. He knew because he had set the fire himself! My grandmother had to go and help fight the fire that her son started.

Daddy attended public schools in Randleman, NC. According the yearbook, The Rendezvous (1951) of Randleman High School, he was voted as Best Sport as a senior. He played football for four years, and during his senior year, he served as co-captain with his good friend, Richards "Booger" Mansfield. Beside his senior photo is written, "Actions are mightier than boasting." I believe that this quote quite accurately reflects my father's career as a teacher and a coach. -from notes of Fran Richardson, daughter of Donald Lee Richardson, Lexington, SC.

Child of IRIS WALL and DONALD RICHARDSON is: i. FRANCES CATHERINE8 RICHARDSON, b. June 04, 1963, Columbia, SC.

Notes for FRANCES CATHERINE RICHARDSON: Frances Catherine Richardson was born June 4, 1963 4:04 a.m. at Providence Hospital in Columbia, SC. She was named in honor of her uncle, Francis Glenn Wall, and her maternal grandmother, Laura Katherine Keels Wall.

I was an only child born several years into my parents' marriage. The day before my birth, my mother summoned my father from yard work to announce that it was time. She was horrified that he went in to clean up and shower before taking her to the hospital. I, of course, did not show up for several more hours, and so, there was no rush. In fact, my grandparents had enough time to make the trip from Timmonsville with Uncle Frankie. According to Mama, she once yelled out in pain, and poor Granddaddy tried to get this his baby. Finally, the family settled in for a long night, and I came along at 4:04 a.m. while everyone was asleep in the waitng room. According to dady, the top of my head looked loke a Coke bottle! Such sentiment from a new father!
