St. Margaret’s church has a unique link to the city’s most famous family and is best known for its Mausoleum which contains the tombs of 9 members of the Bute family. John Stuart, the first Marquess of Bute and his wife Charlotte, who inherited the Cardiff Castle estate in 1776, are both buried there. This historic building was designed by John Prichard (1817-86), the Victorian restorer of Cathedral. Although the main construction of the present building was completed in 1870, the site has been used for Christian worship for more than eight hundred years. The rebuilding of St. Margaret’s Church and Bute Mausoleum was entirely financed by the 3rd Marquess of Bute
