Herbert H. Lehman College THE CLASS OF of The City University of New York May 28, 2020 2020 1 Dear Class of 2020: As I write this, I am reflecting on the 2018 Winter Olympics. I remember being impressed by the vignettes highlighting the personal sacrifice and commitment that led some of the most admired and talented athletes in the world to the medal stand. Those traits – sacrifice and commitment – came to mind when I thought about your graduating class of more than 3500 students. Though you did not have the privilege those Olympic athletes enjoyed to devote themselves completely to just one thing, you have shown, especially in the months leading up to this moment, that you share the same kind of commitment and sacrifices needed to help you take your place among champions. While studying, many of you have worked several part-time jobs, caring for children and relatives, commuting many hours to and from classes. Without the benefit of a financial safety net, you have also now managed to complete the disrupted term of spring term, often with inadequate internet access and with multiple challenges compounded by stay-at-home restrictions. What you have achieved would be admirable in any context but in the context of 2020, it is phenomenal. Nearly 40 percent of you have lost your jobs and critical income this spring. Some of you have battled COVID-19 yourselves, and far too many of you have friends and loved ones coping with COVID-19. It grieves me to say that at least two of your peers lost the fight with coronavirus, with the Bronx being one of the counties hardest-hit by the pandemic in the country.

  • LM Findlay in the French Revolution: a History
    L. M. Findlay "Maternity must forth": The Poetics and Politics of Gender in Carlyle's French Revolution In The French Revolution: A History ( 1837), Thomas Carlyle made a remarkable contribution to the history of discourse and to the legiti mation and dissemination of the idea of history qua discourse.' This work, born from the ashes of his own earlier manuscript, an irrecover able Ur-text leading us back to its equally irrecoverable 'origins' in French society at the end of the eighteenth century, represents a radical departure from the traditions of historical narrative.2 The enigmas of continuity I discontinuity conveyed so powerfully by the events of the Revolution and its aftermath are explored by Carlyle in ways that re-constitute political convulsion as the rending and repair of language as cultural fabric, or. to use terms more post-structuralist than Carlyl ean, as the process of rupture/suture in the rhetoric of temporality.3 The French Revolution, at once parodic and poetic, provisional and peremptory, announces itself as intertextual, epigraphic play, before paying tribute to the dialogic imagination in a series of dramatic and reflective periods which resonate throughout the poetry and prose of the Victorian period. In writing what Francis Jeffrey considered "undoubtedly the most poetical history the world has ever seen- and the most moral also,"4 Carlyle created an incurably reflexive idiom of astonishing modernity. And an important feature of this modernity indeed, a feature that provides a salutary reminder of the inevitably relative, historically mediated modernity of the discourse of periods earlier than our own - is the employment of countless versions of human gender to characterize and to contain the phenomenon of revolution.

Biography How can we respond when God seems to ask the impossible of us? Venerable Thecla Merlo (1894–1964) must have asked herself this question many times. Born to a simple farming family, Thecla was not highly educated, and she was plagued by poor health. In 1915, however, she embarked on an extraordinary adventure that would place her at the forefront of a new charism in the Church. This young seamstress would be among the first Daughters of St. Paul, dedicated to proclaiming the Gospel with all forms of media. Thecla’s uncommon gifts, unshakable confidence in God, and broad vision made her a prophetic voice for evangelization. One hundred years later, her legacy continues to inspire men and women around the globe. “How beautiful and holy it is to communicate Jesus to others—the Jesus whom we want to always carry in the center of our hearts.” — Venerable Mother Thecla Merlo $14.95 U.S. ISBN 0-8198-7527-9 Thecla A Prophetic Voice in Media Evangelization by Domenico Agasso BOOKS & MEDIA Boston The Scripture quotations in this publication are from the Revised Standard Version of the Bible, Catholic edition, copyright © 1965 and 1966 by the Division of Christian Education of the National Council of the Churches of Christ in the U.S.A., and are used by permission. Dawnings News for the AURORA of CNY Community Honorary Chair and Presenting Sponsor Dr. Lawrence Stewart Thursday, May 23, 2019 Skaneateles Country Club Sam & Carol Nappi Follow AURORAofCNY on Facebook! Dawnings— News for the AURORA of CNY Community Spotlight on Partnerships We received this letter from a long-time colleague and community provider who recently retired, summing up our work together: “I have found that one of the most impactful conditions with our residents can be loss of hearing. The sense of isolation often results in depression, social withdrawal and rapid de- cline. Many residents are unable to afford hearing aids or imple- ments and become very frustrated. I have been very fortunate to partner with AURORA Hearing and Vision Service…Together, we have worked with a number of people here to assist them with the process and have had wonderful success. I especially recall two ladies that had profound hear- ing loss, but received devices after making arrangements with AURORA. They lit- erally cried upon receiving them, then being able to hear well enough to partici- pate in conversations and communicate. We feel very fortunate to be able to work with this agency to improve the quality of life for our residents. Thank you again for all that you and your agency do to help bring the joy of improved sight and hearing to people in need.” We value the working partnerships and collaborations we have with other service providers in the community. We are “better together” as we meet the needs of our community members with vision or hearing loss.
