From The BV Office State Directors Message

Welcome to another big year in the world of Badminton.

This year sees another full tournament season with both team and individual events scheduled throughout the year. The full calendar can be found on the BV website.

Victoria will again be hosting the Li-Ning Victorian International tournament at the end of June, as well as the popular State Pennant & Doubles league. This year we are trying a “match play training” program called “Protech Team Victoria @ MSAC” this program is aimed at players who are just out of junior ranks (18-25 range) with a few elite players to push the standard of the younger players.

As well as many opportunities to compete, there are also many coaching courses throughout the year for you to get involved in. Again these are detailed in the event calendar on the BV website. Contact coaching coordinator Michelle Rigg, for more information: [email protected]. We can arrange officiating courses on a needs basis; all you have to do is contact the court official’s secretary, Fred Stanlake for details: [email protected]

Badminton Victoria is very pleased to have Li-Ning as our major sponsor for the Li-Ning Victorian International, Victorian Graded & the All School Badminton Championships. We would also like to welcome Protech as a new sponsor for State Pennant & Doubles League, Junior State Titles and our new program “Protech Team Victoria @ MSAC” which will assist players just out of junior ranks to transition into senior/elite players. We would like to thank MSAC for providing courts for this program as sponsorship and Epsilon for again printing our annual calendar.

The BV staff and BV board would like to be able to visit more member associations throughout the year, so if you have an Annual General Meeting or Committee meeting coming up during the year and would like to have one of us attend, please don’t hesitate to contact us at the BV office. We can go through the programs we run, programs we could assist your association to conduct, funding opportunities and whatever is important to your association.

The Passing Of Alan Walsh Alan became Vice President of the Western Suburbs Badminton Association in 1982 and was the President from 1983 until 1988, during which time he and his Committee negotiated with the Altona City Council and were successful in obtaining the lease of the Altona Badminton Centre exclusively for Badminton. This involved Alan attending the regular fortnightly council meetings for some years prior to the approval of the badminton centre. Alan played with West Newport and Westgate Uniting Church clubs for many years. Since leaving the committee, Alan has been a regular visitor and supporter of the association and will be sorely missed. Our thoughts are with Joy and their children at this time. Elite Player Management Workshop In early 2013 successfully held the ‘Elite Player Management Workshop’ headlined by renowned international coach Andy Wood.

The workshop attracted coaches from right across Australia to Maribyrnong College for the day long program. Australian National coach Lasse Bundgaard and Exercise Physiologist Wynter Chan also presented during the workshop. Wynter worked with the National Badminton Squad in the lead up to the 2012 Olympic Games and provided a valuable insight in correct training techniques.

It was fantastic to see such good numbers attend the workshop, with 40+ participants over the two day event.

VicHealth Funding BV has just recently completed 18 month SSAPP report to VicHealth, below is the feedback we received from our Project officer Shelley Salter.

In the first 18 months of SSAPP Badminton Victoria has stepped up the work of PICSAR, through education, consultation and showing a genuine commit to inclusion and participation of CALD communities through a range of formats.

Congratulations to BV for engaging champions of change including Board members attending the SSAPP course as well as having several clubs, coaches and associations being made aware and leading the inclusion agenda. Having 37 coaches undergo cultural awareness and inclusion training is a great achievement, in partnership with the other SSAs involved.

Your community consultation and partnerships continue to be a strength of your work, with regular meetings leading to new programs in Hampton and now Rowville. Congratulations for leading the way and establishing a self-sustaining program in Geelong with more opportunities for translating programs like this in other locations. The positive community engagement approach will continue to bring about cultural change as others see the promotion of your success.

Thank you for your feedback regarding the SSAPP support mechanisms, and your willingness to engage and learn with other sports in the workshops and learning circle forums. It's great that you've identified the inclusive coaching and Board relationship resources as a useful reference point. I will also aim to meet with BV more regularly to help address the challenges, find opportunities and celebrate the wins along the way.

I look forward to the year ahead, as your staff and Board continue to influence coaching modules, organise further Board training and initial officials training, and your website shows the stories that celebrate success Well done BV on your SSAPP story so far and all the best for 2013.

Professional behavior as a BWF Technical Official Extract: BWF - COCTales - December 2012

Whilst we are all amateur Technical Officials, we endeavour to do a professional job on court and courtside and we are generally considered by players and officials to do just that.

However, incidents in other sports - and to some extent also in badminton – have raised the question of the professional behaviour of Technical Officials outside the court, in particular regarding the media. The development of modern media such as Facebook and Twitter only makes the question more pertinent.

Firstly, it goes without saying that we all have freedom of speech. It is a fundamental human right that no one can take away.

Secondly, as Technical Officials we accept to follow BWF’s Constitution and Regulations, including the Code of Conduct for Coaches, Team Officials and Technical Officials. We must not bring the game into disrepute, and we cannot bet on any match in an event in which we officiate - no problem.

Thirdly, is we have in my opinion to be very careful when we speak to the press. We must also refrain from commenting on a badminton event or comment on fellow officials, players or any team officials on Facebook, Twitter or other modern social media medium.

A loose remark even if it is in haste, perhaps even meant as a joke, may be read - and misread - by the world and can never be erased.

Umpires and referees may sometimes meet with the media. The best way to deal with them would be to try to avoid commenting, or refer the matter to the Press Secretary of the tournament as they will be a professional who is trained to answer any questions. Or, if there are no qualified persons available, perhaps leave it to the referee. Referees, too need to be very careful and if they do need to comment ensure that the statement is based on facts.

It is tempting for an umpire or a referee to share experiences with colleagues using Facebook, but it is also a way to expose yourself to the world. Be professional. Take care - or perhaps better, think twice or just don’t do it! BWF Rule Change Reminder to all players that the follow rule came into effect on the 1st January 2013 and it will no longer be possible to have the lettering of the country name a height above 5 cm

General Competition Regulations

22.2.4 The country name must be a maximum height of 5 centimetres. (Effective 1st January 2013).

Australian Youth Olympics - Team Badminton Australia - 17th January 2013

The Australian badminton team failed to register a win on the opening day of the Australian Youth Olympic Festival, except for an impressive effort by women’s doubles pair Jacqueline Guan and Gronya Somerville against Great Britain. This, the final match of the day, was the only one in which one of the seeded teams (, , Great Britain, Chinese Taipei) conceded a game.

In the opening match, Australians Matthew Chau and Gronya Somerville faced Tom Wolfenden and Holly Smith from Great Britain. The British tore away to an insurmountable lead in the first game, scoring six of the first seven points. Chau and Somerville's frustration and determination was palpable as their serving and returning often let them down. Consequently, Great Britain won the first game comfortably. The second game saw an improvement on the Australians’ part, with the teams going almost point for point. At one stage the Australians even held game point at 22-21. Britain, however, claimed the next three points in a match that the Australian team considers the one that got away.

The men’s singles competition was a short-lived one, with high quality Englishman Alex Lane disposing of Australian Sawan Serasinghe in straight games: 21-9 and 21-14. Though, after an animated talk with the coach in the game break, Serasinghe came out strongly, but he was not able to maintain that high standard of play for the remainder of the match.

There was similar disappointment in the women’s singles match, in which Australian Verdet Kessler lost in two games to Chloe Birch (GBR). Birch remained composed during rallies while Kessler desperately, though admirably, lunged and dived for unlikely and ultimately futile returns.

Despite an auspicious start for the double’s team of Chau and Serasinghe, the contest against Wolfenden and Aaron Cheng resulted in further loss for Australia. The Aussies managed to follow Team GB to an 18-all score line in the first game, which was promptly altered by Wolfenden and Aaron Cheng in their favour, once again denying Australia a game. The British team claimed the victory with less resistance in the second game.

Great Britain’s only threat to outright badminton superiority came in the women’s doubles event, the first game won by Somerville and Guan, 21-16. The second game saw high intensity play from both the Australians, and Birch and Smith. The drama rose to a higher level when Guan objected to a dubious call from the linesman. This, however, did not hinder their play. With resolve, Somerville and Guan won the second game (21-15) and subsequently the match.

Such was the nature of the day’s play, characterised by dominance by the seeded teams; the sole upset achieved by Guan and Somerville.

"It was a bit disappointing to lose 4-1, especially in the mixed doubles, but it was great that we managed a win. We didn’t go into this particular match with a lot of expectations, so it was a good surprise," said Australian Olympian and media liaison .

Australian Youth Olympics - Team Badminton Australia - 21st January 2013

Australia’s two badminton teams rebounded strongly on day 2 of competition, defeating Combined Oceania and New Zealand. It was not without some difficulty, with Oceania and New Zealand notching up a win each against the Australian teams before the Aussies closed out each tie 4-1.

The trans-Tasman feud made for some exciting badminton. New Zealanders Elliot Pike and Rayna Phillips, and Australians Cham Chen and Natasha Sharp were neck and neck in the first game of the mixed doubles. The Australians won the opening game by the closest possible margin, 21-19.

In the following game, the Aussies, particularly Chen, claimed their right to victory with a number of brilliant plays. After diving to return a well placed shot, he was left lying on the court when the shuttlecock came again in his direction, which he then successfully returned while still on the ground. Australia won the game by seven points.

The fierce competition between the Aussies and Kiwis continued in the men’s singles match between Hu-Wen Chew (AUS) and Dylan Soedjasa (NZL). It was the first three game match in the tournament. The score in the deciding game was 21-18 in Chew’s favour.

New Zealand was able to snag its first and only win of the competition so far in the men’s doubles, with Pike and Jacob Morgon winning a 21-18 third game, after coming close in the mixed doubles and the women’s singles.

Oceania’s competitiveness against Australia was the biggest shock of the semi-finals. Not only did Jennifer Tam force Verdet Kessler to a third game (which Kessler won convincingly), but they even claimed their first successful match of the competition, with a 21-10 second game victory to Remi Rossi, the number one player in Tahiti. Every other match was won by the Australia.

Australian Youth Olympics - Team Badminton Australia - 21st January 2013

The team stage of the badminton competition concluded, with China, the number two seed, victorious over Malaysia. Though it was expected that it would come down to those two teams, every team has something about which to be proud and look forward to.

Chinese men’s singles player Song Xue was the most threatening player of the first two days, and is likely to excel similarly in the individual event. Xue did not concede a single game in the three matches he played, all of them against adept players. After a tight first game (19-21), he kicked into second gear and wiped Joo Ven Soong out 21-13. Ven Soong should be lauded for coming so close to stealing a game from Xue; prior to this match the greatest number of points Xue conceded in a game was 16. Having already ensured victory by winning the first three matches, the Chinese team decided to rest their women’s singles and doubles players in anticipation of the individual competition.

Australia’s two teams were forced to compete for fifth and sixth place, given that they had each defeated one opponent. The first team naturally beat the second, in spite of the valiant efforts of 14-year-old Joy Lai, who drove her compatriot Verdet Kessler to a third and deciding game. Lai is one of the most promising members of either team.

The greatest success in this competition for Australia has been the female pair of Jacqueline Guan and Gronya Somerville, who won all three matches in which they played—even against Great Britain, who beat every other Australian team convincingly. Great Britain commenced their campaign in emphatic fashion, with Tom Wolfenden and Holly Smith upsetting the Australian pair.

The British were swept by their next two opponents, China and Chinese Taipei, but they too showed flashes of brilliance, most conspicuously from singles competitor Alex Lane. Lane proved a powerful player with a whole hearted approach to the game. He will likely be a large part of Team GB’s future in badminton.

Chinese Taipei performed on a similar level to China and Malaysia, losing 3-2 against Malaysia in the semi-finals. Their men’s doubles pair, Ko-Chi Chang and Szu Yu Chen, brought the most vigour and enthusiasm to the competition, often grunting triumphantly for the whole hall to hear after scoring a particularly satisfying point. Chang and Chen were not all sound and fury, though, as they proved when they defeated Malaysian pair Tai and Tan.

Australian Youth Olympics - Individuals Badminton Australia - 21st January 2013

China has won all but one gold medal in the badminton at the Australian Youth Olympic Festival (AYOF). Expectations were always high for the team, but their results in this competition have been outstanding.

The first gold medal was awarded to China’s mixed doubles pair, Tianyi Pei and Xiaohan Yu, who defeated China’s other mixed doubles pair, Ningyi Zhang and Yaqiong Huang.

China’s unseeded women’s singles player Jinjing Qin upset the number one seed, Malaysian Yin Fun Lim, squealing with delight after each point she made. This victory was on the back of another upset in the semi-finals against the second seed.

There was great anticipation for the men’s singles match between China’s Song Xue and Malaysia’s Joo Ven Soong. The hype was not misguided; it was a spectacularly high quality match.

Xue was yet to be defeated in his five matches, while Soong’s only loss had been to Xue in the first place playoff for the team event.

“I knew his style which was good, but he also knew mine, so it was tougher than the other day,” Xue said. “I expected to win; I am aiming for number one.”

Xue won 21-17, 21-18, despite an outburst during the second game wherein he loudly protested at the linesman the decision that his racquet had reached over the net after he seemingly won a point.

Played at a similar pace, the women’s doubles match, also between China and Malaysia, was a more equally matched affair, but the Malaysian pair was at last able to win their first and only gold in the badminton.

After a slow start that gave Malaysia’s men’s doubles team the first game, China’s Pei and Zhang charged home with a 21-12 final game, giving China their fourth gold medal for the day.

Chinese Taipei won three bronze medals from under the nose of Great Britain, who managed one in the men’s doubles with Aaron Cheng and Tom Wolfenden. Malaysia’s mixed doubles team also won a single bronze medal to accompany the team’s three silver medals.

MPIO Training The Member Protection Information Officer (MPIO) Course, once a 2 day workshop, is now only 4 hours online, with a 3-4 hour workshop available in every state.

To learn more about the value of an MPIO to your club, state or national association and how to access the training to become an MPIO go to: ausport.gov.au/supporting/integrity_in_sport

Badminton Victoria encourages all members to complete the FREE MPIO training workshop, as we believe it will be a valuable tool for all Badminton members.

Why were the MPIO training programs developed?

MPIO training programs are relevant to all sporting organisations that have a Member Protection Policy and Procedure (which might also be called a by-law or regulation).

The training programs have been developed to assist sport organisations better manage complaints and issues under their Member Protection Policy and Procedure by having a suitably trained person as the first point of contact for issues of harassment, discrimination, bullying or abuse in their sporting organisation. The MPIO role should be clearly outlined in the sport’s Member Protection Policy and Procedure.

The steps to be recognised as an MPIO have been developed by the Australian Sports Commission (ASC) and DPCD-SRV and are consistent with other States/ Territories.

What do Member Protection Information Officers do?

Member Protection Information Officers (MPIOs) play an important and positive role in sport. MPIOs are an important contact when someone has a question or is unsure how to best resolve a concern or complaint about harassment, abuse or other forms of unacceptable behaviour.

MPIOs listen and provide impartial and confidential information and support to assist contacts to determine what they can do next to best resolve their issue.

MPIOs are not advocates, nor are they complaint handlers and so do not resolve issues themselves, but can assist others to speak to those who can.

Coaches Corner Australian Sports Commission - Online Courses Coaching general principles courses have been developed by the Australian Sports Commission, and cover the aspects of coaching common to all sports. There are two coaching general principles courses available: Beginning Coaching General Principles This program is aimed at the new or first time coach, who has no previous coaching experience. In particular, it is aimed at coaches working with children. There are five modules in the course and it takes approximately 6 hours to complete. Intermediate Coaching General Principles This program is aimed at coaches who have moved beyond the beginner level of coaching and want to improve their skills and knowledge to improve athlete performance. These coaches would typically be operating at club / regional level. This course is a pre requisite for the Level 2 Badminton Coaching Course. How to enrol For more information visit the Australian Sports Commission website Please note that completion of the general principles component alone does not provide accreditation. Other useful courses There are also other generic courses and programs that are useful for coaches to complete. Related links for the following courses can be found on this website including:  Play by the rules  Sports first aid  Sports rage prevention program

Australian Sports Commission - Coaching Tips “Demonstrating a skill” Everybody has heard the old saying that a picture paints a thousand words. Demonstrating a new skill is an important component of coaching. Tips for demonstrating a skill  Make sure all the participants can see the demonstration. Be aware of distractions such as the sun, traffic or other groups.  The coach doesn't always have to do the demonstration. Other options include one of the players who you know can perform the skills, or a picture, diagram or video may help.  Ensure that the skill is demonstrated in the context of the game situation, so that participants understand ‘why’ as well as ‘how’ it is done.  Highlight the main points of the skill. Keep explanations simple and brief. Try not to emphasise more than two or three key points at a time.  Avoid pointing out things 'not to do' as this will only overload the players.  You can break the skill into separate components for the purpose of the demonstration, but ensure you demonstrate the complete skill at normal speed first and at the end.  Let the participants practice. New information stays with people for only a short period of time unless they are able to try the skill.  Always show the correct skill last. If you are showing a player the difference between what they are doing and what you want them to do, demonstrate the correct skill after you have shown them their current method.
