  • Bobbie Rosenfeld: the Olympian Who Could Do Everything by Anne Dublin
2005 GOLDEN OAK BOOK CLUB™ SELECTIONS Bobbie Rosenfeld: The Olympian Who Could Do Everything by Anne Dublin BOOK SUMMARY: Not so long ago, girls and women were discour- aged from playing games that were competitive and rough. Well into the 1950s, there was gen- der discrimination in sports. Girls were consid- ered too fragile and sensitive to play hard and to play well. But one woman astonished everyone. In fact, sportswriters and broadcasters in this country agree that Bobbie Rosenfeld may be Canada’s all-round greatest athlete of the twen- tieth century. Bobbie excelled at hockey, bas- ketball, softball, and track and field, and she became one of Canada’s first female Olympic medallists. Just as remarkable as her talent was her extraordinary sense of fair play. She greeted obstacles with courage, hard work, and a sense of humor, and she always put the team ahead of herself. In doing so, Bobbie set an example as a true athletic hero. AUTHOR BIOGRAPHY: Like Bobbie Rosenfeld, Anne Dublin came to Canada at a young age. She worked as an elementary school teacher for over 25 years, and taught in Kingston, Toronto, Winnipeg, and Nairobi. During her writing career, Anne has written short stories, articles, poetry, and a novel called Written on the Wind. Anne currently works as a teacher- librarian in Toronto. • Contemporary China: a Book List
PRINCETON UNIVERSITY: Woodrow Wilson School, Politics Department, East Asian Studies Program CONTEMPORARY CHINA: A BOOK LIST by Lubna Malik and Lynn White Winter 2007-2008 Edition This list is available on the web at: http://www.princeton.edu/~lynn/chinabib.pdf which can be viewed and printed with an Adobe Acrobat Reader. Variation of font sizes may cause pagination to differ slightly in the web and paper editions. No list of books can be totally up-to-date. Please surf to find further items. Also consult http://www.princeton.edu/~lynn/chinawebs.doc for clicable URLs. This list of items in English has several purposes: --to help advise students' course essays, junior papers, policy workshops, and senior theses about contemporary China; --to supplement the required reading lists of courses on "Chinese Development" and "Chinese Politics," for which students may find books to review in this list; --to provide graduate students with a list that may suggest books for paper topics and may slightly help their study for exams in Chinese politics; a few of the compiler's favorite books are starred on the list, but not much should be made of this because such books may be old or the subjects may not meet present interests; --to supplement a bibliography of all Asian serials in the Princeton Libraries that was compiled long ago by Frances Chen and Maureen Donovan; many of these are now available on the web,e.g., from “J-Stor”; --to suggest to book selectors in the Princeton libraries items that are suitable for acquisition; to provide a computerized list on which researchers can search for keywords of interests; and to provide a resource that many teachers at various other universities have also used.

  • Bishop Otter College Guild Newsletter 2018
Bishop Otter College Guild Newsletter 2018 Guild Newsletter 2018 | 3 Welcome to the Bishop Otter College Guild Newsletter 2018 We are very excited to announce the return of the Jean Lurçat tapestry to the Chapel of the Ascension after six years. The tapestry had not been taken down since its installation in the early 1960s and although it was in very good condition it showed evidence of dye fading due to over exposure to high light levels, a few areas of abraded weft particularly at shoulder and arm height and it was very dusty. The work undertaken by conservator Zenzie Tinker (pictured below) has addressed the damage caused by dust and abrasion and the tapestry has been raised to reduce the risk of people brushing against it when using the altar. The issue of UV damage remains but the tapestry will now be checked annually by the conservator to assess its condition. The Chapel of the Ascension has played a central role in the life of the University since its creation and we are thrilled to be able to showcase the tapestry once more. We invite our alumni back to campus to view the tapestry either before or during the Bishop Otter Guild Reunion. If you would like to visit please get in touch with the Alumni Team who will be happy to arrange a visit for you. 01243 812171 [email protected] 2 | Guild Newsletter 2018 Bishop Otter College Guild President Professor Clive Behagg Vice-Presidents Dr Colin Greaves Professor Philip E D Robinson Honorary Secretary Mr Marten Lougee 11 Meadow Close Cononley, Keighley West Yorkshire BD20 8LZ 01535 636487

K–5 FRAMEWORK TEACHING HARD HISTORY A FRAMEWORK FOR TEACHING AMERICAN SLAVERY ABOUT THE SOUTHERN POVERTY LAW CENTER The Southern Poverty Law Center, based in Montgomery, Alabama, is a nonpar- tisan 501(c)(3) civil rights organization founded in 1971 and dedicated to fighting hate and bigotry, and to seeking justice for the most vulnerable members of society. ABOUT TEACHING TOLERANCE A project of the Southern Poverty Law Center founded in 1991, Teaching Tolerance is dedicated to helping teachers and schools prepare children and youth to be active participants in a diverse democracy. The program publishes Teaching Tolerance magazine three times a year and provides free educational materials, lessons and tools for educators commit- ted to implementing anti-bias practices in their classrooms and schools. To see all of the resources available from Teaching Tolerance, visit tolerance.org. © 2019 SOUTHERN POVERTY LAW CENTER Teaching Hard History A K–5 FRAMEWORK FOR TEACHING AMERICAN SLAVERY 2 TEACHING TOLERANCE // TEACHING HARD HISTORY // A FRAMEWORK FOR TEACHING AMERICAN SLAVERY CONTENTS Introduction 4 About the Teaching Hard History Elementary Framework 6 Grades K-2 10 Grades 3-5 18 Acknowledgments 28 Introduction Teaching about slavery is hard. It’s especially hard in elementary school classrooms, where talking about the worst parts of our history seems at odds with the need to motivate young learners and nurture their self-confidence. Teaching about slavery, especially to children, challenges educators. Those we’ve spoken with—especially white teachers—shrink from telling about oppression, emphasizing tales of escape and resistance instead. They worry about making black students feel ashamed, Latinx and Asian students feel excluded and white students feel guilty.

Grant Comes East: A Novel of the Civil War. Thomas Dunne Books, $24.95 ISBN 312309376 Alternative account Authors produce their second what-if story What if the South had won the Battle of Gettysburg? This is the question addressed in Newt Gingrich and William R. Forstchen's Grant Comes East, the follow-up to their imaginatively entitled Gettysburg, in which Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia did indeed outmaneuver and defeat the Army of the Potomac at their critical clash in July of 1863. The backgrounds of both authors render them well-suited to speculating as to the military strategy and political wrangling that may have followed such a turn of events. In addition to being a former Speaker of the House, Gingrich holds a Ph.D. in history, is a visiting professor at the National Defense University, and serves as a member of Donald Rumsfeld's Defense Policy Board. Forstchen, the more experienced author with over 30 previous books, is an associate professor of history at Montreat College. The novel opens with Ulysses S.

  • Renormalizing Individual Performance Metrics for Cultural Heritage Management of Sports Records
Renormalizing individual performance metrics for cultural heritage management of sports records Alexander M. Petersen1 and Orion Penner2 1Management of Complex Systems Department, Ernest and Julio Gallo Management Program, School of Engineering, University of California, Merced, CA 95343 2Chair of Innovation and Intellectual Property Policy, College of Management of Technology, Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne, Lausanne, Switzerland. (Dated: April 21, 2020) Individual performance metrics are commonly used to compare players from different eras. However, such cross-era comparison is often biased due to significant changes in success factors underlying player achievement rates (e.g. performance enhancing drugs and modern training regimens). Such historical comparison is more than fodder for casual discussion among sports fans, as it is also an issue of critical importance to the multi- billion dollar professional sport industry and the institutions (e.g. Hall of Fame) charged with preserving sports history and the legacy of outstanding players and achievements. To address this cultural heritage management issue, we report an objective statistical method for renormalizing career achievement metrics, one that is par- ticularly tailored for common seasonal performance metrics, which are often aggregated into summary career metrics – despite the fact that many player careers span different eras. Remarkably, we find that the method applied to comprehensive Major League Baseball and National Basketball Association player data preserves the overall functional form of the distribution of career achievement, both at the season and career level. As such, subsequent re-ranking of the top-50 all-time records in MLB and the NBA using renormalized metrics indicates reordering at the local rank level, as opposed to bulk reordering by era.
