The Boys of Terezin
The Boys of Terezin Teacher Resource Package Prepared by: Susan Starkman, B.A., M.Ed Synopsis Country of Origin: United States Director: John Sharify Runtime: 52 minutes Themes: Holocaust, overcoming adversity, healing power of art, music and literature This uplifting documentary is testament to the way that the drive for creativity cannot be stifled, even under the most challenging conditions. Risking their lives, the teenage residents of Home One, a children’s concentration camp, created a magazine called VEDEM that chronicled their daily lives through essays, poems and pictures. The last boy to remain at Terezin buried all 800 pages, retrieving the manuscript after liberation. In 2010, Music of Remembrance commissioned Vedem, an oratorio based on the boys’ experiences, to be performed by the Seattle Boychoir. Included in this group, is Toronto’s George Brady, familiar to many as the brother of Hana Brady (Hana’s Suitcase). Curriculum Links The Boys of Terezin can be used to meet the requirements of the Media Studies component of English, Grades 7-12. It can also be used to meet the requirements of Grade 10 History (CHC2D), Grade 12 World History: The West and the World (CHY4U), and Grade 12 Adventures in World History (CHM4E). In the minds of Israelis, this I am pleased to present the results of our work of the past year . In our is the value that is worth risking their own personal safety . I wonder and annual report, we inform you about the supported projects and we would not dare to guess what such a survey would look like in Europe or highlight the most interesting ones . We report on the work of the fund and in the Czech Republic . we try to present ourselves as well . I wish to add a few personal remarks . What does this dilemma have to do with the Foundation for Holocaust The year 2011 brought several important world events . In connection Victims? Why do I mention this in the forewords of our annual report? with the work of the Foundation for Holocaust Victims, I wish to mention It is because there were 6 million Jewish victims of holocaust, 6 million one of them in particular – the release of the long imprisoned, and human beings . -

Transport & Communication 10th Summer Academy on the History of the Jews in the Holy Roman Empire and its Successor States Vienna, Eisenstadt, Fürth, Fulda, Wolfenbüttel, Jever & Leer 25 July – 10 August 2018 The Summer Academy on the history of the Jews in the Holy Roman Empire and its successor states was established in 2009 as spin-off product of the research-cluster „The Jewish Holy Roman Empire“. From its inception, the main objective of the summer academy has been to acquaint students and early career scholars with an intensive, critical, interdisciplinary, research-oriented and source-based training in the history of the Jews and their relations with the non-Jewish environment in Central Europe from the late 15th century to the present. The summer academy focuses on, but is not limited to the Jewish experience in the Holy Roman Empire. Every year the summer academy focuses on a different special subject. In 2018 the focus is on "Transport and Communication". The Summer Academy comprises altogether five components, which consist of at least fourteen teaching units of 90 minutes each: A) Background knowledge and discussion B) In-depth teaching units concerning the respective special topic C) Excursions D) Paleography courses E) and F) Historical Moot Courts (Ius Commune MC – The Imperial Aulic Council) and Historical Jewish Law Moot Court – The Rabbinic Tribunal of Prague) Palaeography courses are offered in six different variants giving the participants the opportunity to acquire or enhance reading skills in original German, Hebrew, Yiddish, Judaeo-German and Judaeo-Spanish sources on different levels. The Crocus Project – Booklist 1 There are very many books written about the horrors of the Second World War and the Jewish children who lived and died during it. Some are stories like Anne Frank’s. Some tell of survivors and refugees, some are about the brave people who tried to help. Most are based on true stories. The Nazis persecuted the Jews and they also persecuted others: black people, homosexuals, Roma and people with disabilities. Writers, journalists, socialists, trade unionists and political opponents to the Nazi regime were also targeted. There are several listings of books about the Holocaust suitable for children. Anotace Vedem je název českého literárního časopisu, který byl tajně vydáván v letech 1942- 1944 v terezínském koncentračním táboře. Vznikl na popud učitele Valtra Eisingera, jenž měl na starost židovské chlapce žijící v „Domově“ č.I tzv. bloku L417 a podporoval jejich kulturní rozvoj a tvůrčí schopnosti. Chlapci ve věku od čtrnácti do šestnácti let se ujali tajného vydávání časopisu, který vycházel každý pátek po dobu zhruba dvou let. Obsah tvořily stálé rubriky, básně, povídky, ale též filozofické eseje či literární kritiky. Svou ucelenou formou se časopis Vedem snažil co nejvíce přiblížit skutečnému periodiku, o čemž svědčí i žertem uvedená částka na titulní straně. -

Recha (geb. SCHWEITZER) FREIER geb. 29.10.1892 Norden gest. 2.4.1984 Jerusalem Lehrerin, Dichterin jüd. - - (BLO I, Aurich 1993, S 147 - 148) Recha Freiers Vater, Manasse Schweitzer, war Lehrer an der Jüdischen Volksschule in Norden. Bei einem Sonntagsspaziergang zum Blücherplatz wurde die Familie am Betreten des Platzes durch ein Plakat gehindert, das die Aufschrift trug: "Hunden und Juden ist das Betreten verboten". Recha Freier (Quelle: Bildarchiv Die Familie zog wenig später (1897) nach Schlesien. Dies der Ostfriesischen Landschaft) Geschehen wurde für Recha richtungweisend. Nach dem Studium der Pädagogik und Volkskunde wurde sie Lehrerin und heiratete später den Berliner Rabbiner Dr. Moritz Freier. Der Ehe entstammen vier Kinder, die heute in Israel leben. 1932/33 lernte Recha in Berlin die Not jüdischer Jugendlicher kennen: Boykott in der Schule, in Lehrstellen, auf den Arbeitsplätzen, verursacht durch die antijüdische Hetze der nationalsozialistischen Machthaber. In ihr reifte der kühne Plan, diese jüdischen Jugendlichen nach Israel auswandern zu lassen - die Idee der Jugend Aliyah war geboren. Gegen alle Widerstände im In- und Ausland, in den eigenen jüdischen und in nichtjüdischen Reihen setzte sie ihn durch, rettete Zehntausenden von jungen europäischen Juden das Leben (darunter auch einigen Ostfriesen) und emigrierte als letzte mit ihrer Tochter Maayan 1941 nach Israel, wo ihr Mann und die drei Söhne seit 1939/1940 auf sie warteten. Hier setzte sie in den 40er Jahren zusammen mit Henrietta Szold ihr Rettungswerk fort und errichtete Ausbildungs-, Erziehungs- und Heimstätten für die Jugendlichen, deren Eltern z. T. in den deutschen Konzentrationslagern ermordet wurden. In Israel fanden diese Jugendlichen ihre neue Heimat - und in Recha Freier ihre Mutter.
