Lowell's Boat Shop, a circa 1793 business owned and operated since 1976 by Malcolm J. and Marjorie Odell, stands on the banks of the Merrimack River on lots 42 and 43 in the town of Amesbury, Massachusetts. The shop's address is 459 Main Street, adjacent to the intersection of Main Street and Clark's Road, in the middle of a residential neighborhood that dates from the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The shop stands on a 1/3-acre lot that abruptly slopes to the river bank; the 2-1/2-story shop is set against the slope, with the first floor at river level and the second floor at street level. [1] The shop consists of a series of gable-front, barn-type buildings that incorporate the original building, dating to circa 1793, an 1806-built shop moved to the site in 1860, an 1860 addition to the 1793 shop, and two 1946 additions. SIMEON LOWELL'S ORIGINAL BOAT SHOP (1793) The original shop, built by Simeon Lowell in or around 1793, sits on a fieldstone foundation and is a rectangular wood frame structure 25 by 55 feet in area. All the wood visible in the shop's construction is native pine. The shop's two stories are divided into a first floor former paint shop, now used for storage, the second floor boat shop, and a half-story loft used for drying the timber to build the boats. The building is framed with post and beams that are reinforced with diagonal trusses on the second floor and ship's knees on the first floor. The beams that support the second floor are deck beams, placed so that the continuation sheet 8. Lowell's Boat Shop, established by Simeon Lowell in 1793, is the oldest, continually operating boat shop in the United States. Generally credited as the designer and builder of the typical American dory, Simeon Lowell and his descendants built this craft, as well as other boats, on the banks of the Merrimack River until 1976, when the shop was purchased by the present owner, who continues the tradition. The dory, arguably the most famous American small craft, was the typical American fishing boat for inshore and offshore fisheries throughout the 19th century and well into the mid-20th century, and influenced the design of some fishing vessels that were built with greater deck area to accomodate stacks of these boats. The dory was also the first type of American small boat to be mass-produced on a small scale. Dories have been built at Lowell's, at the same site, in the same building, for one hundred and ninety-six years. The knees and deck beams are probably unused ship parts and reinforce local tradition that Simeon Lowell was first a shipbuilder before turning his hand to small craft. There are no interior posts in the mid-floor areas; the knees and deck beams provide adequate support for the first and second floors, and iron tie rods support the half-story loft and roof. [2] The shop is sided with clapboards on the street elevation, painted white, interrupted by a pair of double doors. A loft door above the double doors has a fixed beam, fitted with block and tackle, used to stow timber in the loft. The other elevations of the shop are covered with wood shingles. The windows are double-hung wood sashes, six over six, with plain surrounds. The gable roof is shingled; there are two brick chimneys. In 1860, increased business led to an expansion of the shop. The original shop, a five-bay structure then 25 by 45 feet in area, was lengthened by a riverside addition of a ten-foot bay; this bay is now sheathed with asphalt shingles. The interior of the shop is unpainted and lined with work benches. The second floor is the boat building area and is taken up with three boat beds. After the bottom of the boats are built, the transom and stem are added. Called a "skillet," this assembly is mounted, upside down, on the bed, where the bottom is beveled to match the garboard's slope.

    The Sharpie –A Personal View 2009 THE SHARPIE - A PERSONAL VIEW BY MIKE WALLER This article was originally published in Australian Amateur Boat Builder Magazine * * * * * To say that all flat bottomed boats are Sharpies is to say that all animals with four legs are horses. The statement simply does not hold water. It is true that most sharpies have flat bottoms, but the Sharpie is a unique design style which evolved over a specific period of history to fill a particular need, and to which certain well defined rules of design apply. The initial statement also denies the individuality of a multitude of other distinct hull ‘types’ such as the many and varied dory hull forms, skiffs, punts and hunting boats, and ‘near flat bottomed’ boats such as skipjacks, (not all Sharpies have absolutely flat bottoms, for that matter,) which developed in tandem with the Sharpie. A common misconception is that the Sharpie originated in Europe. It is true that many flat bottomed boats have existed in Europe over the years, notably the ‘Metre Sharpies’, but to say that the Sharpie evolved in Europe would make such great figures as Howard Chapelle, the well known maritime historian, turn in his grave. While there will always be differing opinions, the accepted history of the traditional Sharpie as we know it, is that it evolved on the eastern seaboard of the United States of America in the Oyster fisheries of Connecticut. It is largely down to the efforts of Howard Chapelle, who spent a lifetime documenting the development of the simple working boats of the United States, that we can credit most of our current knowledge of the rules and characteristics which define the traditional Sharpie as a distinct vessel style.

Now those very same reefs attract many visitors to experience the amazing diversity of marine life that it offers. Sharks and Scorpion fish, Octopus, Lionfish, Turtles and legions of multi-coloured fish of all shapes and sizes are to be found here! Add to that an exciting variety of cetaceans and you have a wildlife paradise. Despite the frustrating hiccoughs experienced by various members of the group in their travels, due to the snowy weather in the UK, we had a successful week in and around this intriguing chain of coral islands. After a brief stay in the lovely Bandos Island Resort (very brief for Pat and Stuart!), which gave us time for some snorkel practice, we boarded the MV Theia, our base for the next week. We soon settled into the daily routine of early morning and evening snorkels, daytimes searching for cetaceans or relaxing, and evening talks by Chas, our local Maldives expert.

Morris Author of ALONE AT SEA A native of Gloucester, John N. Morris, PhD, is Director Emeritus of the Institute for Aging Research at Hebrew SeniorLife in Boston, a Harvard-affiliated aging research program. He has published widely in his field. Dr. Morris’s ancestors have been fishermen going back to the seventeenth century. His Portuguese father was a Gloucester fish cutter and his Swedish mother a Gloucester fish packer. His grandfather, Stephen Olsson, spent more than four decades as a Gloucester doryman and was lost at sea in 1935. Dr. Morris is a board member of the group preserving one of the last of the surviving Gloucester schooners, the Adventure. He lives in Tyngsboro, Massachusetts. An Interview with Dr. Morris Q: How did you come to write Alone at Sea? A: For 42 years, my grandfather, Steve Olsson, went to sea as a doryman – a halibut fisherman – sailing with some of Gloucester’s greatest skippers. But on March 7, 1935, for reasons never fully explained, my grandfather and his fishing partner Charles Daley of St. Joseph’s Newfoundland, while fishing from the schooner Oretha F. Spinney, disappeared from their dory – never to be seen again. Their loss came at a time when the dory fishery was drawing to a close. Six years later, I was born. During my childhood, my mother Olive told loving stories of her Papa. In 1999, I discovered via a web site that the grandson of the captain of the Spinney not only knew about my grandfather, but was named Stephen after him.

    Photo Essay: How to Build a Nova Scotian Grand Banks Dory By Jeff Spira Plans available at: http://SpiraInternational.com/ How to Build a Nova Scotian Grand Banks Dory By Jeff Spira In Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, throughout the 1800's the finest dories in the world were being built by two different boat builders. These craft served as fishing boats launched from the decks of schooners and fishing practically in the middle of the North Atlantic, year-round. This Nova Scotian was derived from the original Grand Banks fishing dories. You can launch these boats through the surf, keep going in weather that drives everyone else back to the beach, and load more into this boat than boats substantially larger. A better rough water pulling boat cannot be found anywhere. The boat shown in these photos was built by Kevin Power in 2017. Like all of the Spira International Ply on Frame boats, the frames are built first. The plans give you precise dimensions to build the frames The strongback is built next. It serves as a kind of jig to ensure the boat is straight and proportioned correctly. The plans detail this member as well. The stands may be built from any extra or scrap lumber you may have access to. The strongback also holds the elements up so that you can work on it at a comfortable height. The centers of the frames are cut with a notch for the keelson to be attached. Note that the frame cutouts are wider than the keelson. This leaves gaps on either side of the frames that become limber holes, that let water collect to the lowest point of the boat and make draining (with drain plugs) easier when the boat is out of the water or pumping the bilge when the boat is in the water.

Let's discuss some of the basics of boat hulls so that you'll be able to look at a hull and figure out how it will perform. Displacement Hulls All boats operating at low speeds are displacement hulls. This includes planing hulls going slow. What defines a displacement hull is that the boat displaces the weight of water equal to the boat's weight (including the weight of the people and cargo inside.) Sailboats, canoes, kayaks, most dories, rowboats, trawlers, and cargo ships are all examples of displacement hulls. For a displacement hull to move through the water it must push water aside as it passes, then after it passes water comes back together to refill fill the space taken up by the hull.
