The preferred source for the turkeys would be the Province of Ontario, but alternative sources include the northeastern United States from Minnesota eastward and Tennessee northward. -

CARVALHO' From the Entomology and Economic Zoology Section, Iowa Agricultural Experiment Station and the Fish and Wildlife Service, United States Department of the Interior Received December 10, 1942 During the author's experiments with coccidia of wild rabbits in Iowa, the most complete studies were made with E. neoleporis, because it was able to grow in the tame rabbit. Experiments were carried on to observe its behavior, life cycle, biometrical or physiological changes, immunity relationships, etc., in the latter host. -

Parasitic Arthropods TICKS Ticks (Ixodida) are arachnids, typically 3 to 5 mm long, part of the superorder Parasitiformes. Along with mites, they constitute the subclass Acari. Ticks are external parasites, living by feeding on the blood of mammals, birds, and sometimes reptiles and amphibians. Ticks evolved by the Cretaceous period, the most common form of fossilisation being amber immersion. Ticks are widely distributed around the world, especially in warm, humid climates. Almost all ticks belong to one of two major families, the Ixodidae or hard ticks, and the Argasidae or soft ticks. Adults have ovoid or pear-shaped bodies, which become engorged with blood when they feed, and eight legs. In addition to having a hard shield on their dorsal surfaces, hard ticks have a beak-like structure at the front containing the mouthparts, whereas soft ticks have their mouthparts on the underside of their bodies. Both families locate a potential host by odour or from changes in the environment. Ticks have four stages to their lifecycle, namely egg, larva, nymph, and adult. Ixodid ticks have three hosts, taking at least a year to complete their lifecycle. Argasid ticks have up to seven nymphal stages (instars), each one requiring a blood meal. Because of their habit of ingesting blood, ticks are vectors of many diseases that affect humans and other animals. Identification / General characteristics of tick genera (hard and soft ticks) Although most people consider ticks to be either small and red or large and blue, on closer inspection many species are extremely colourful when examined under a stereoscopic microscope. -

Scharfl ABSTRACT Banding and censusing large numbers of gull chicks over a 30-year pe riod on Great Lakes islands has produced a collection of five individual ticks from two Herring Gull (Larus argentatus) chicks. The tick species, Hema physalis ieporispalustris, found on the gulls is commonly found on Snowshoe Hares (Lepus americanus). Although this represents an apparently uncom mon record on Herring Gulls, this host could be an important source of aerial vector dispersal during regular cyclic hare/tick population peaks. Populations of the flea, Ceratophyllus lari, have increased rapidly in ground nesting Double-crested Cormorant (Phalacrocorax auritus) colonies from none 16 years ago. -

ALLRED Salt Lake City, Utah In recent years increased interest has been shown toward those arthropods which are capable- and potential' vectors of diseases to man and animals closely associated with man. Although outbreaks of human plague in the United States have never been of such dis- astrous proportions as those in Europe and Asia, there has been con- tinued concern over its presence in sylvatic form since its discovery in rats at San Francisco in 1900. Various workers have implicated more than sixty species and subspecies of fleas with human and syl- vatic plague throughout the world. Of this number, over forty-five species and subspecies are known to occur in the United States as obligate or facultative parasites of birds and mammals. -

RECORDS OF OHIO FLEAS (SIPHONAPTERA)1-2 J. G. HUMPHREYS3 Department of Zoology, Ohio University, Athens, Ohio ABSTRACT A check list of Ohio Siphonaptera is presented, with species distribution records listed by city or county. Twenty species and four subspecies are recorded from Ohio. Chaetopsylla lotoris (Stewart), Conorhinopsylla stanfordi Stewart, Doratopsylla blarinae C. Fox, Epitedia wenmanni testor (Rothschild), Stenoponia americana (Baker), Peromyscopsylla scotti I. Fox, and Oropsylla arctomys (Baker) are new state distribution records. Early studies of fleas in Ohio are few. Fox (1940), in his comprehensive study, Fleas of the Eastern United States, listed 8 species from Ohio. Hughes, in an unpublished report (dated 1938), records 5 species. These records, plus occasional records from other authors, provide a list of 12 species of fleas from the state. During this study, six hundred and five Siphonaptera from 20 species of mam- mals and 1 bird were examined. Four hundred and thirty-three specimens were collected by the author from mammals live-trapped during the period of March through December, 1964. The remaining specimens were either contributed by various individuals (60 specimens) or are in the entomological collections at The Ohio State University (110) or Ohio University (2). These specimens together with literature records on North American fleas provide a total of 20 species and 4 subspecies from Ohio. Seven species are reported for the first time from the state. S. A. PREFACE Fleas of the United States did not receive the special atten- tion of any entomologist prior to 1895, when Baker's Prelimi- nary Studies appeared. In 1904, this somewhat sketchy paper was followed by the same author's monumental revision of American Siphonaptera, and since then various other authors have contributed many short papers to the knowledge of this interesting group. Yet, in spite of these contributions and the growth of large collections of American fleas in the United States and abroad, no revision of the order as it occurs in this country has been attempted since Baker's great work. Even the faunal lists which play such a prominent part in the litera- ture of other groups are unavailable for nearly all states. This lack of published information is particularly unfortunate in view of the tremendous medical importance of fleas, especially with regard to the increasing concern about their implication in the transmission of diseases other than the bubonic plague. Since many of the types of western species are in collections unavailable to the author, this work was necessarily confined to a consideration of the species reported as occurring in the East. Therefore, the keys and diagnoses of larger groups apply to the fleas which inhabit the eastern half of the United States, i.e., the region east of the one-hundredth meridian with the exclu- sion of Texas. -

Wilson and Johnson: Ectoparasites of Isle Royale, Michigan THE MICHIGAN ENTOMOLOGIST ECTOPARASITES OF ISLE ROYALE, MICHIGAN Nixon wilsonl and Wendel J. Johnson2 Isle Royale National Park is a rocky archipelago of approximately 200 islands and islets in northwestern Lake Superior. Politically it belongs to the State of Michigan situated 50 miles to the southeast. The main island lies parallel to the Canadian shore, which is from 12 to 15 miles to the northwest. It is 45 miles long, and 9 miles wide at its broadest point. A review of the climatological, vegetational, and geological features of the island is given by Mech (1966). Most of the material included in this paper was collected incidently by Johnson during a three-year study (1966-68) of the food habits of the red fox (Vulpes vulpes (Linnaeus)), and population dynamics of three of its principal prey species--the snowshoe rabbit (Lepus americanus), red squirrel (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus), and deer mouse (Peromyscus maniculatus) (see Johnson, 1969). -

Scharfl and Patrick E. Lederle2 ABSTRACT Fleas were collected from mammals during the period 1990-1992 in two upper peninsula counties. Identified specimens were compared to existing distribution records for both parasite and host. Only those records which are newly documented for county, upper peninsula or Michigan are listed. We re port one previously unknown flea species and five new host records for Michigan. One host record is new for the upper peninsula. In addition, seven new host/parasite combinations are recorded for two central upper peninsula counties.
