Abstract The objective of this work is to convey a compact picture of the relationships of the authors to one another and of their concerted working efforts. This is ascertained primarily though the use of the correspondence between Vuk Stefanović Karadžić and Jacob Ludwig Karl Grimm. The basis of this examination is provided by the collected letters of Vuk Karadžić and Jacob Grimm and of Jernej Kopitar, who played an important role in the working relationship between Karadžić and Grimm, as well as by the writer's biographies and their works. The correspondence was largely taken from the works Sabrana Dela Vuka Karadžiča. Prepiska II and Vasmers Bausteine zur Geschichte der deutsch-slavischen geistigen Beziehungen I and B. Kopitars correspondence with Jakob Grimm. A general insight into the lives of each of the writers is first given, followed by an examination of their cooperative work and their relationships to each other. The most extensive joint work of Grimm and Karadžić, namely Vuk Karadžićs Kleine serbische Grammatik, translated into German and with a preface from Jacob Grimm, is thereby given special attention. The origins of the preface, as well as the preface itself are dealt with. The romantic era in the German speaking world and romanticism in Serbia, as well as the development of the Serbian language during this era are also discussed. 6 1.

Abstract The relationship between magyarization and Hungarian civil society during the reform era of Hungarian history (1790-1848) is the subject of this dissertation. This thesis examines the cultural and political activities of three liberal oppositional nobles: András Fáy (1786-1864), István Bezerédj (1796-1856) and Ödön Beöthy (1796-1854). These three men were chosen as the basis of this study because of their commitment to a two- pronged approach to politics: they advocated greater cultural magyarization in the multiethnic Hungarian Kingdom and campaigned to extend the protection of the Hungarian constitution to segments of the non-aristocratic portion of the Hungarian population.

The Virtual Library of the Faculty of Mathematics, http://elibrary.matf.bg.ac.rs, contains more than 50 digitized books on astronomy written by Serbian scientists. This article presents a selection of books written in the 18th and 19th century by the authors: Ruđer Bošković, Zaharije Orfelin, Atanasije Stojković, Đorđe Stanojević, Milan Andonović and Kosta Stojanović. For each of these authors a short biography is included. INTRODUCTION The Virtual Library of the Faculty of Mathematics is the largest database of digitized texts in Serbia which is open for public use. At the time of writing this article, it contains nearly 1500 books mostly in mathematical sciences of old Serbian scientists (e.g. N. Pejović, 2009). Important collections in this library are a collection of 360 doctoral dissertations in mathematical science, most of them defended at the Faculty of Mathematics of the University of Belgrade and rare books from the 18th and 19th century. Most of these books are rather rare; some of them exist only in one copy and in fact are unavailable to the general public.

The beginning of that struggle is connected to the year 1814, when, in the royal city of Vienna, Vuk’s first grammar book came out: The Orthography of the Serbian Lan- guage Based on the Speech of the Common Folk, which dealt with resolving the three most important standard-related issues: a) the issue of the Serbian orthography, b) the issue of the morpho- logical structure of the Serbian language, and c) the issue of the name of the language and its national boundaries. Rare are the languages, if, indeed, there are any, which have had such a turbulent history of two hundred years. The histor- ical development of a language can be followed at two histor- ical levels: that of its internal and that of its external history.

Ni{ i Vizantija XV 337 Xenia Golub (National Széchényi Library, Budapest) THE ICONOGRAPHIC PROGRAMME OF THE WALL- PAINTING ENSEMBLE OF THE MONASTERY CHURCH OF GRÁBÓC Contemporary Hungary’s oldest functioning Orthodox monastery is the Monastery of the Holy Archangels in Grábóc, Hungary, (Serbian name: Грабовац), founded by monks from Dragović in Dalmatia, in 1585.1 The church of the monastery was built in 1741 in the arrangement seen today; the interior decoration and furnishings acquired their final and current form in the mid-1780s. The wall-painting ensemble extending over the entire internal wall surfaces of the church, nearly preserved in full, was made by two artists. As suggested by rele- vant findings in art history research, the figural compositions may be identified as the main work of Andrej Šaltist (?–1797/1798), a painter from Novi Sad, whereas the so-called quadratura painting, in imitation of architectural and plastic orna- mentation, is to be attributed to Franz Florian Hofman (?–?), whose name is as yet known in the history of art only from this single place.2 The significance of the Grábóc wall-paintings in art history is first and foremost justified by the fact that it was here that Baroque Illusionism adopted from western art first emerged in the Orthodox wall paining of the historic Archbishopric of Sremski Karlovci.3 1 The author wishes to thank the Serbian Institute of Budapest for supporting her re- search in Grábóc, as well as for the assistance with preparing her publications on this subject and the translation thereof. Slavia Meridionalis, 17. https://doi.org/10.11649/sm.1311 Raymond Detrez Universiteit Gent Partenij Pavlovič – the “Wandering Monk” as a Networker Historians studying the spread of ideas tend to show a predilection for the period of Enlightenment and early (cultural) nationalism. The transi tion to modernity and the emergence of national consciousness appear to be imposing historical phenomena with, in addition, a strong patriotic appeal. The preceding period – which tellingly is not even deemed worthy of a par ticular name – is often treated as a transitional or introductory period, which is interesting insofar as it ushers in the great era of national awakening. This hindsight view should not avert us, though, from dealing with the prenational Balkan eighteenth century as a historical period in its own right. The premodern Balkan society was not void of ideas. However, these were not the kind of ideas historians are able smoothly to include into a national narrative. What was characteristic of the premodern Balkans – and certainly not solely of the Balkans – is the predominance of religious and not ethnic, let alone national collective selfidentification (Detrez, 2010, 2013; Детрез, 2015). The majority of the population in the Balkans confessed Orthodox Christianity This work was supported by Ghent University and the Katholieke Universiteit van Leuven, Belgium.
