In this study, the population growth of Callosobruchus maculatus reared on beans from four cowpea cultivars fertilized with different nitrogen sources was evaluated. The factors tested were beans from four cowpea cultivars and seven different nitrogen sources: mineral N fertilization, inoculation with five strains of symbiotic diazotrophic bacteria, and soil nitrogen (absolute control). RESULTS: BRS Tapaihum and BRS Acauã cultivars had lower cumulative emergence and instantaneous rate of population growth of the insects compared with other cultivars, indicating antixenosis resistance against C. maculatus. Inoculation of BRS Acauã cultivar with the diazotrophic bacteria strain BR 3299 resulted in higher mortality of C. maculatus. For BRS Tapaihum cultivar, inoculation with diazotrophic bacteria strains BR3267, BR 3262 and BR 3299, and nitrogen fertilization resulted in higher mortality among C. maculatus. CONCLUSION: BRS Tapaihum and BRS Acauã cultivars showed the lowest cumulative insect emergence and instantaneous rates of population growth, and the highest insect mortality, mainly when the grains were obtained from plants inoculated with rhizobial strains. -

A sanitary evaluation was carried out in seven forest nurseries in Costa Rica, to prepare the diagnosis of phytosanitary problems. 15 species of insects were diagnosed, 44 of pathogens and 5 of mites, in a total of 80 forest species under production. At the apex, the most important damages are caused by the borer Hypsipila grandella and the cutter Trigona sp. and as pathogens Botrytis sp., Cylindrocladium sp. and Phomopsis sp.; in the foliage, by the insects Eulepte concordalis, Dictyla monotropidia and Austropuccinia psidii, Colletotrichum spp., Dothistroma septosporum, Melampsoridium alni, Oidium sp., Olivea tectonae, and Phyllachora balansae as pathogens. These problems are described and the principles and practices contemplated in Integrated Pest Management (IPM) are recommended for their control. Its accidental introduction to Michigan may be a particular concern to vegetable, fruit and ornamental industries. Michigan risk maps for exotic plant pests. Quarantine status The Egyptian cottonworm has been intercepted at least 65 times at U.S. ports of entry since 2004 (Ellis 2004). This insect has been detected in greenhouses in Ohio but was subsequently eradicated (Passoa 2008). It is listed as an exotic organism of high invasive risk to the United States (USDA-APHIS 2008). II Abstract Selectivity in mate choice and mating behaviour is a central element of sexual selection, and an important component of evolution in a number of species across the animal kingdom. Mate choice relates to how individuals respond to the phenotypic traits of potential mates in order to maximize their own fitness. As most studies on sexual selection concentrate on female mate choice, it is interesting to investigate to what extent male choice may play a role in evolution. -

We developed a list of pests associated with beans (in any country) that occur in Jordan on any host based on scientific literature, previous commodity risk assessments, records of intercepted pests at ports-of-entry, and information from experts on bean production. This is a qualitative risk assessment, as we express estimates of risk in descriptive terms (High, Medium, and Low) rather than numerically in probabilities or frequencies. We identified seven quarantine pests likely to follow the pathway of introduction. We estimated Consequences of Introduction by assessing five elements that reflect the biology and ecology of the pests: climate-host interaction, host range, dispersal potential, economic impact, and environmental impact. We estimated Likelihood of Introduction values by considering both the quantity of the commodity imported annually and the potential for pest introduction and establishment. We summed the Consequences of Introduction and Likelihood of Introduction values to estimate overall Pest Risk Potentials, which describe risk in the absence of mitigation. -

TJie followint; apparently undescribcd species have mostly been received from Mr. Roberto Miiller, of Mexico City, for identification. I have been assisted in placing some of the species by Sir George F. Ilampson and Mr. William Schaus. Their assistance is specially acknowledged under each heading. All the species are from Mexico excei)t in one famil}', the Cochlidiidae, where species from Costa Rica and Brazil are described. Superfamily PAPILIONOIDEA. Family SATYRID^. Genus EUPTYCHIA Hubner. EUPTYCHIA PERTEPIDA, new species. Dark gray; a reddish shade over the middle of the fore wing, espe- cially marked along the median vein and the bases of veins 3 and 4; a diffused band of erect scales across the disk beyond the median vein, cut by the reddish veins. Hind ^ving with the diffused reddish shade outwardly; two elongated blackish spots on the margin between veins 3 to 5. Beneath the fore wings are reddish on the lower half; two brown lines cross the disk, and there is a row of submarginal lunate dusky spots. Ilind wing brown-gray, the two median lines wavy and irregular, with a faint similar subbasal line, the outermost line followed by a bright reddish shade. A submarginal row of silvery scaling in a waved and broken line, crossing two velvet}' black oval spots on the margin, on which the silver forms irregularl}' geminate spots. Expanse, 35 mm. Female similar, but the whole discal area of fore whig overspread willi bright brownish red, the Imes of the underside slightly indicated, the SOX mark absent. -

Abstract: A large number of Bacillus thuringiensis isolates separated from different ecological regions of Pakistan were analysed for pesticidal activity against two lepidopteran cotton insect pests, American bollworm (Helicoverpa armigera and spotted bollworm (Earias vittella). The biological activity of local B.t. isolates demonstrated a wide range of LC50 values against both target pests. The most potent isolates HW 4.4 and INS2.25 against Helicoverpa armigera showed LC50 value of 9ng/mg of artificial diet. The Lc50 value of 2ng/mg of artificial diet was exhibited by local B.t. isolates HFZ 11.3, MR 19.1 and MG 2.6 against Earias vittella. Although insect viruses and fungal pathogens are used as microbial control agents, but Bacillus thuringiensis Berliner (B.t.) appears to has the greatest potential for this purpose. Bacillus thuringiensis is an aerobic, spore forming, Gram-positive bacterium that synthesizes a crystalline parasporal inclusion composed of one of several proteins known as insecticidal crystal proteins (ICP) or delta-endotoxins during sporulation. -
