By Allen Turner [email protected]

Tonight, Whiteville City Schools will present Columbus County Commissioners with their plans to build a $73 million high school and athletic complex on a roughly 60-acre site yet to be determined. The presentation comes after the school board in a majority vote endorsed the plan Sept. 12. Five of the Columbus County commissioners who could be reached for comment Friday expressed surprise at the cost of the proposal. All five say they will not increase property taxes to pay for construction in either the Whiteville City or Columbus County Schools.
