S. & Gana A. J. Department of Civil Engineering College of Science and Engineering Landmark University Omu-Aran, Kwara State Email: [email protected], [email protected] Corresponding Author: Gana A. J. ABSTRACT Designing for pedestrians is a research work carried out as a result of the inadequate availability of pedestrian facilities resulting to increased accidents and other environmental and human hazards resulting from intermodal competitions for spaces vis-à-vis Highway capacity. This has helped to consider the possibility of pedestrian facilities for transportation in Taiwo road. The presence of pedestrian in Taiwo road has been investigated and found to be 538 per hour. In this research, Pedestrian facilities were designed for the Ibrahim Taiwo road in Ilorin city which is 3900m distance (from Taiwo salee junction to the end of the road at General Hospital roundabout). The design was done by carrying out pedestrian count on the Sidewalk and Crosswalk for the road in two hours for three days. The Sidewalk designed is 2.0m while the distance between the crosswalk markings is 0.6m and the thickness of the zebra crossing line is 0.6mat 3800m, 3200m 2150m, 650m and 200m from the origin of the road with 3m width, the Island height is 0.15m, the height of the signs above the ground is 2.0m and the Bus shelters are located at 3800m and 650m from the origin.

E -mail address: [email protected] Abstract Building raw materials and processed products can vary greatly in radionuclide contents depending on the character and the geology of the their origin. 160 samples of Brick block and 160 samples of Concrete block for constructing dwellings were collected across the Ekiti State, Nigeria. The activity concentrations of 40 K, 226 Ra and 232 Th in the Brick block and Concrete block samples were determined by using gamma-ray spectrometry using a 7.62 cm × 7.62 cm NaI(Tl) detector of dimension, housed in a 6 cm thick lead shield. The results show that the mean activity concentration values of 572.6 ± 175.9 Bq kg -1, 47.9 ± 9.8 Bq kg -1 and 63.8 ± 9.4 Bq kg -1 for 40 K, 226 Ra and 232 Th respectively in concrete blocks are higher compared to the the mean activity concentration values 351.1 ± 3.1 Bq kg -118.7 ± 6.2 Bq kg -1 and 39.8 ± 3.5 Bq kg -1obtained in brick blocks. The absorbed dose rate, Annual dose equivalent, the external hazard and the qualification coefficients were determined.

MAPPING OF OFADA RICE PRODUCTION AREAS FOR RICE VALUE Supported by CHAIN DEVELOPMENT IN SOUTH-WEST NIGERIA J. A. Oyedepo1, A. M. Omotayo2, K Elemo3 and E. O. Oyedepo2* 1Institute of Food Security Environmental Resources & Agricultural Research, Federal University of Agriculture, PMB 2240, Abeokuta, Nigeria 2College of Agricultural Management & Rural Development, Federal University of Agriculture, PMB 2240, Abeokuta, Nigeria 3College of Plant Sciences, Federal University of Agriculture, PMB 2240, Abeokuta, Nigeria *Corresponding author: [email protected] Received: January 02, 2018 Accepted: June 29, 2018 Abstract: Mapping exercise of Ofada rice production areas was motivated by the need to develop, spatially targeted interventions that will positively impact local rice value chain in south western Nigeria. The study aimed at identifying production areas and associated constraints for development of decision support to aid geographical targeting of interventions. 254 Ofada rice farmers in 55 villages in 11 local Government areas of three Nigerian States were identified. Hand held GPS devices were used to obtain coordinates of farms, parboiling milling centres and markets for the commodity. The coordinates were imported into GIS and added to existing base maps. Simple distance analysis was done to show proximity to facilities along the value-chain of the commodity. Results show that the total output per year in the entire production area is about 500 tons while only two production clusters exceeded 130 tons per year. The indication is that Ofada rice production still requires intervention. States that production inputs locations were far from majority of the rice farmers had very low output. There is the need for direct intervention to improve access of farmers to all rice production inputs.

  • Decent Work and Social Security: a Myth Or Reality in Nigerian Macro Communities?
Annals of Global History Volume 1, Issue 1, 2019, PP 19-23 Decent Work and Social Security: A Myth or Reality in Nigerian Macro Communities? G. M. Kayode1, B. G. Agboola2 1,2Department of Adult Education and Community Development, Ekiti State University, Ado-Ekiti, Nigeria. *Corresponding Author: G. M. Kayode, Department of Adult Education and Community Development, Ekiti State University, Ado-Ekiti, Nigeria [email protected]. ABSTRACT This study examined jobs in formal and informal sectors of macro communities of Ekiti State, Nigeria, with a view to determine whether they could be described as decent work. The study also examined the existence of social security in the state. While random sampling was used to select nine communities used in this study, a purposeful sampling technique was used to select a total of ten respondents who were currently employed in the formal sector and another ten respondents in the informal sector. These respondents were used for the study. Three research questions guided the study and the instrument used for data collection was combined questionnaire administration and interviews. Questionnaires were administered on 180 purposely-selected respondents. The data obtained from these set of respondents was analysed by using Likert rating scale. Results obtained in the former sector were negative for all the jobs attributes considered while the positive attributes observed in the informal sector were enveloped by failure of the workers in this sector to meet their basic needs for survival. The State lacked social security that could alleviate workers’ poverty. Hence decent work is lacking in the State. Also the enabling environment for decent work is lacking in the state.
