But he put his real genius into his eccentricity, installing a clavichord in his car to facilitate composing, building a folly on his estate the last constructed in England and happily entertaining horses as well as people for tea. He also dyed his pigeons strange colours, hung Woolworth pearl necklaces around the necks of his dogs and ate a special recipe of blue mayonnaise. Mark Armory's biographical skill is in his sensitivity. His Berners is no mere caricature, but rather a complex man whose eccentricity was a response to depression. He had a lifelong terror of being bored and of boring others, because boredom was so close to despair. Amory's book never offends on that score. Mark Amory has been the Literary Editor of The Spectator for the last twenty-five years, thus making him the longest serving Literary Editor in London. In addition to his Lord Berners biographer he has written one on Lord Dunsany, as well as editing the published letters of Ann Fleming and Evelyn Waugh and a volume of Marc Boxer's drawings and cartoons. Lord Berners was a composer which I know a little about and a fantastic writer. Both fiction and memoir writing. And of course a dandy eccentric. A man who had his horse run free in his living room there's a photograph of this plus he liked to dye the feathers of his birds because when they fly it makes them book beautiful. How can this not be a fantastic biography? Mark Amory did a great Lord Berners: The Last Eccentric and it's truly a shame that Lord Berners is not more well-known in today's world. Lord Berners himself was a composer, novelist, playwright, and painter, with his work showing a strong surrealist and whimsical bent, never taking itself too seriously. He lived openly in a homosexual relationship on a vast estate that was something of Lord Berners: The Last Eccentric menagerie both socially and literally, with its numerous Lord Berners: The Last Eccentric and a pet giraffe roaming the grounds. Intent on a life of hedonism, he nevertheless produced some notable musical compositions a friend was kind enough to send me a CD of Berner's music and two memoirs one of which I own but haven't yet read. His various short stories and novellas were posthumously published as Collected Tales and Fantasiesand it was this book that initially led to my interest in this notable eccentric and aesthete. Armory's biography does a good job of detailing the swirl of people and events in Lord Berners' life, but it seems curiously inert, somehow, in comparison to its subject.

Reprinted from http://www.glbtq.com Gerald Hugh Tyrwhitt-Wilson, the fourteenth Baron Berners, was, as his friend Osbert Sitwell reflected, a dilettante, but a dilettante in the best sense of the word. A composer, painter, and novelist, he was, first and foremost, a genuine British aristocratic eccentric whose life was, in a sense, a grand performance. He was born September 18, 1883, at Apley Park, Shropshire, to a family with a long noble pedigree. A shy and effeminate boy, he was discouraged from pursuing his love of art and music by his pious and conventional mother, who felt such inclinations unbecoming a young man of his class. Berners was educated at Eton and, in 1899, entered the diplomatic service, despite failing its written examinations. He was first posted as an honorary attaché to Constantinople, where he met Harold Nicolson, later the husband of Vita Sackville-West. Subsequently he was posted to Rome, where he became a friend of Ronald Firbank, who was his major literary influence, and Igor Stravinsky, who admired his musical compositions. In 1918, he inherited his uncle's title, fortune, and properties. Consequently, he left the diplomatic service and retired to the family estate at Faringdon, Oxfordshire, in order to devote his life entirely to the pursuit of his pastimes and pleasures. As Lord Berners, he cultivated a considerable reputation as an eccentric. He was known for such antics as dyeing the doves on his estate various colors, arranging color-coordinated meals, and traveling through Europe with a spinet piano in the rear seat of his Rolls-Royce.

    Summer Garden Party at Kiftsgate Thanks to the generosity of Anne Chambers, who allowed us use her magnificent gardens at Kiftsgate Court, Chipping Campden, Friends and volunteers met for the GRDM Annual Summer Party on Friday 14th July. The Chairman, Gabrielle Falkiner, welcomed over 60 guests who enjoyed the prosecco and soft drinks donated by Guy Warner of Budgens in Broadway. Thanks to the hard work of Maggie Osborne we also had some excellent canapes. Comments both on the night, and later by email, commended the wonderful location and the ambience of the occasion. Those new to Kiftsgate were so impressed by the gardens that we are sure that Anne Chambers will receive many visits from our Friends in the future. The Portwell Bench, Faringdon Following our visit to Buscot Park on Wednesday 13th September the GRDM Friends will have an opportunity, when we take our lunch break in the nearby town of Faringdon, to see the Portwell Bench in the market square. This stone seat was cleaned in 2014. Local artists were invited to submit proposals for renovating the Bench against a brief of invoking the spirit of Lord Berners, the wonderfully eccentric former occupant of Faringdon House. A gifted composer, writer and painter Lord Gerald Berners was a friend of Stravinsky, Gertrude Stein and H.G. Wells and many others. Prior to the Second World War Berners made Faringdon an aesthete's paradise where exquisite food was served to many of the great minds, beauties and wits of the day. John Betjeman, a frequent visitor with his wife Penelope, wrote: "People came to stay at Faringdon not as the famous men and women they often were, but to be themselves".

Cannon Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Professor Geoffrey Boers Choral Conducting, School of Music The formative years of William Walton (1902–1983) are rarely considered when studying the composer’s life and works. However, careful study of that period indicates many of the directions that the adult Walton would take. Industrial Lancashire was more musically active during the period of Walton’s youth (covering the years 1902 to 1912) than is generally considered. His time as a chorister and later undergraduate at Christ Church, Oxford (1912 to 1920), is replete with influential interactions with talented adults and fellow students. Detailed consideration of Walton’s juvenilia reveals a keen thinker who assimilated these various influences in a unique manner. Far more than merely a springboard for a future talent, these years resulted in inspired works and a firm purpose for the budding composer.
