Mervin Pinches and Hank Strock will regale area residents about early times in Mendocino County as part of the continu- ing oral history series. In 1951, Spy Rock Road was blocked by more than five feet of snow, says Pinches, an area rancher. Pinches had nearly 300 ewes and lost many of them that season, many of the sheep jumping off the road and into drifts to get away from traffic. They were unable to escape from the snowdrifts and perished. Predators were also a con- stant menace to area sheep. Early on, Pinches recalls, mountain lions were particu- larly scarce. It was not until between 1945 and 1950 that they became a big problem “Coyotes were terrible, always,” says Pinches. Bears, though, were hard to find. Pinches attributes this to the ever-present hound dog. “In my day we always had a hound around the place.” [email protected] or drop it off at our office at 590 S.
