S. Department of the Interior, Office of WaterResources Research, on Grants 14-01-0001.-1616 and 14- 31- 0001 -3391, to theUniversity of Arizona, Office of Arid Lands Studies (OALS), Patricia Paylore,Principal Investigator. The historic role of the OALS has been the identification,evaluation, and com- puterized control of documentation relating to the world'sarid lands. As our in- formation services have expanded and become better known,certain contemporary topics emerge repeatedly as being of deepestconcern to those who have sought our help.This particular paper was selectedas the first to be developed because of the urgent need to find answers to the pressing problem ofincreasing salinity in the irrigation water furnished Mexico underGovernment Treaty from the Colorado River and its main tributary in Arizona, the Gila.International concern is equally as great as Arizona's or the Federal Government's, andways of dealing effectively with this issue are the recurring subject of diplomaticand political discussions. While this particular immediate case in point is themost highly visible at the moment, its extension to comparable problemareas throughout the arid world is imminent. Because of its timeliness, then, it isour hope that this paper will be a useful adjunct to permanent, realistic, and proper solutions to this worldwide problem. In providing this review of world technical literature,we believe it can be instrumental in the decisions that must be takennationally and internationally to insure equitable answers to a matter demanding scientific,environmental, and social considerations of the highest order. We have tried to tie this array of information together in sucha way as to express a continuity of development by concept, following through on an ideaon this basis rather than a simple chronological or authorarrangement. The evaluative narrative, then, is the vehicle for presenting our findings. We have chosen toaccept the basic view that these problems do not relate exclusively tocrop growing or farm irrigation practices, but extend into all other activities ina drainage basin that affect the quality of irrigation waters. Since somany problems exist on this wide spectrum, and since only recently have the interconnections betweenthem begun to be investi- gated, the philosophy behind our bibliographical choiceshas been that the error of inclusion of possibly irrelevant material is considerably lessserious than that

Common Salt or Sodium Chloride is probably the most widely distributed of all sodium compounds, as it is one of the most soluble. During our investigation of the underground waters of N.W. York• shire, a fruitful aspect of its solubility was presented to us in the disappearance of three tons of salt in a runnel of 19,800 gallons per day. It went down the Smelt Mill Water Sink and reappeared after 10 days at Malham Cove, where the amount of combined chlorine in the water suddenly rose from one up to six parts per 100,000, and in the course of another eight days slowly fell to the normal unit.* We had a similar experience at Clapham. It is apparent, therefore, that any salt in the soil, or in underground channels is carried quickly away by the water, and such soil or underground channels would be thenceforth free from the compound, unless in the course of disintegration fresh quantities were exposed for solution. This, however, is so slow a process that it quite fails to account for the enormous amounts of chloride annually conveyed by rivers to the sea. The position is, perhaps, better seen in the following statement of fact:—The Widdop Reservoir, belonging to the Halifax Corpora• tion, contains some 640*5 millions of gallons of water, and I estimate it to contain 55 tons of salt.

However, ancient writings, ethnographic studies and the evidence of archaeological exploitation highlight it as an essential reference for humanity. Both an edible product and a crucial element for food preservation, it has been used by the first human settlements as soon as food storage appeared (Neolithic). OF As far as the history of food habits (both nutrition and preservation) is SALT concerned, the identification and the use of that resource certainly proves a revolution as meaningful as the domestication of plants and wild animals. On a global scale, the development of new economic forms based on the management of food surplus went along an increased use of saline resources through a specific technical knowledge, aimed at the extraction of salt from its natural supports. ARCHAEOLOGY OF Considering the variety of former practices observed until now, a pluralist approach based on human as well as environmental sciences is required. It allows a better knowledge of the historical interactions between our societies and this “white gold”, which are well-known from the Middle-Ages, but more hypothetical for earlier times.
