Ex officio member UTAH GEOLOGICAL SURVEY The UTAH GEOLOGICAL SURVEY is organized into five geologic programs with Administration, Editorial, and Computer Resources providing necessary support to the programs. The ECONOMIC GEOLOGY PROGRAM undertakes studies to identify coal, geothermal, uranium, hydrocarbon, and industrial and metallic resources; initiates detailed studies of these resources including mining dis- trict and field studies; develops computerized resource data bases, to answer state, federal, and industry requests for information; and encourages the prudent development of Utah’s geologic resources. The APPLIED GEOLOGY PROGRAM responds to requests from local and state governmental entities for engineering-geologic investigations; and identifies, documents, and interprets Utah’s geologic haz- ards. The GEOLOGIC MAPPING PROGRAM maps the bedrock and surficial geology of the state at a regional scale by county and at a more detailed scale by quadrangle. The GEOLOGIC EXTENSION SERVICE answers inquiries from the public and provides infor- mation about Utah’s geology in a non-technical format. The ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES PROGRAM maintains and publishes records of Utah’s fossil resources, provides paleontological and archeological recovery services to state and local governments, conducts studies of environmental change to aid resource management, and evaluates the quantity and quality of Utah’s ground-water resources. The UGS Library is open to the public and contains many reference works on Utah geology and many unpublished documents on aspects of Utah geology by UGS staff and others. The UGS has several computer data bases with information on mineral and energy resources, geologic hazards, stratigraphic sections, and bibliographic references. Most files may be viewed by using the UGS Library. The UGS also manages a sample library which contains core, cuttings, and soil samples from mineral and petroleum drill holes and engineer- ing geology investigations. Samples may be viewed at the Sample Library or requested as a loan for outside study. The UGS publishes the results of its investigations in the form of maps, reports, and compilations of data that are accessible to the pub- lic. Toth Department: Environment and Society The Utah Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands (FFSL) is responsible for the management of state-owned sovereign land in Utah, which includes the bed and banks of the Bear River in Cache and Box Elder Counties. The purpose of this project is to provide relevant background information and data to support the future development of a comprehensive management plan for the Bear River. This project develops a methodology and process to describe the Bear River Corridor, summarizes and integrates existing information regarding important biophysical and socio- cultural attributes of the river, delineates lands along the river into identified management classes, and recommends management goals and objectives to be carried forward into the future development of a comprehensive management plan. While this project is not the most comprehensive or detailed report for any individual attribute of the Bear River, it is currently the most comprehensive resource addressing sovereign lands along the Bear River.

Common Salt or Sodium Chloride is probably the most widely distributed of all sodium compounds, as it is one of the most soluble. During our investigation of the underground waters of N.W. York• shire, a fruitful aspect of its solubility was presented to us in the disappearance of three tons of salt in a runnel of 19,800 gallons per day. It went down the Smelt Mill Water Sink and reappeared after 10 days at Malham Cove, where the amount of combined chlorine in the water suddenly rose from one up to six parts per 100,000, and in the course of another eight days slowly fell to the normal unit.* We had a similar experience at Clapham. It is apparent, therefore, that any salt in the soil, or in underground channels is carried quickly away by the water, and such soil or underground channels would be thenceforth free from the compound, unless in the course of disintegration fresh quantities were exposed for solution. This, however, is so slow a process that it quite fails to account for the enormous amounts of chloride annually conveyed by rivers to the sea. The position is, perhaps, better seen in the following statement of fact:—The Widdop Reservoir, belonging to the Halifax Corpora• tion, contains some 640*5 millions of gallons of water, and I estimate it to contain 55 tons of salt.
