Lauren Hagans, who ran anchor leg: "It feels amazing to break the Drake Relays record. I could feel the Minnesota anchor (Heather Dorniden) coming strong on the last lap so I just tried to hold her off. I could hear my teammates cheering for me and it really pulled me through the last lap." Danielle Bradley, who ran the second leg: "Last year we ran the DMR and the 4x800 against Minnesota and we both broke records in the races, but they beat us both times. This year is a role reversal and it feels good to be on the winning side." Erin Bedell, who ran third leg: "We love coming to Drake Relays. The crowd is always so great and very encouraging. We never really run individual races, so it's a lot of fun to compete with your teammates." On winning a race that isn't run that often: "None of us really run individual races when we come here, so it's a lot fun. It's fun to come out here and try something different. Nevertheless, when we look at the balance of achievements and accomplishments of both the NACAC AA and Athletics as a whole, it is positive due to our athletes from grassroots to high performance. It was a year full of expectations due since there were Continental Areas Election Congresses in all six Area Associations and, moreover, there were elections for all the IAAF elected positions including, for the first time in many decades, two great individuals were running for the presidency of the IAAF. These particular situations kept everybody in a stage of expectations and busy either campaigning or trying to define each one particular individual future. I do not have to go over the outcome or specific results of the different elections since you all know those results but I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all those individuals who ran for elected positions at all levels and were elected and also congratulate those who put their name forward for elections and did not get elected.

    H part one H Former Asian and Pacific Islander American Members 42940_04-APA-CE1.indd 31 2/13/2018 11:53:10 AM Exclusion and Empire 1898–1941 Around midnight, May 1, 1898, nine U.S. warships slipped past the strangely quiet guns on Corregidor Island, past the old Spanish fort guarding the entrance to Manila Bay, and sailed silently toward the Philippines’ capital city. After about five hours, the U.S. Navy’s Asiatic Squadron dipped down close to Sangley Point, just to the southwest of Manila, where a dozen Spanish ships rested at anchor. As dawn broke, the Luneta battery onshore began firing at the intruders. Manuel L. Quezon, a 19-year-old law student in Manila, woke to the cannon fire and ran to the beach as Spanish forces lobbed volley after volley at the American squadron. Then, at 5:40 a.m., U.S. Commodore George Dewey gave the command to open fire. The American warships sailed in an elliptical pattern, each one emptying a broadside into the Spanish fleet before circling back around. Two hours later, Dewey broke off contact and sailed out into the bay. Quezon remembered hearing cheers of “Viva España!” until the Spanish ships began sinking into the shallow waters off Cavite. By 12:30 that afternoon, the Spanish forces had surrendered.1 What Quezon saw from the beaches of Manila Bay was the dawn of America’s overseas empire. In a sudden energetic burst, the country defeated Spain in the War of 1898 (traditionally called the Spanish-American War) and took control of territory in the Caribbean while, in the Pacific, the United States annexed the Philippines and negotiated to obtain Hawaii.2 This 1898 Clifford K.

    CRIMSON TIDE MEN’S TRACK Head Coach Harvey Glance Former World class sprinter Harvey Glance, a 16-time All-American, three-time Olympian and 1976 gold medal winner is beginning his tenth season as the head coach of the men’s track and field team at the University of Alabama. Since Glance has taken over the reigns of the men’s program at the Capstone, the Crimson Tide has found themselves ranked among the nation’s best in cross coun- try and indoor and outdoor track. Glance turned the Crimson Tide’s track program around in just a short period of time. In his third season, he saw 21 of 24 competitors who made the travel roster, set personal best times and marks, and established numerous school records and top ten performances. During his first nine seasons at the Capstone he has coached 66 All-Americans, including 15 in the 2002 season. He has also coached 35 conference champions, 22 new school records, and eight national champions. Track fans around the world understand the synonymous relationships between track and the name Harvey Glance. When you think of one, the other automatically comes to mind. He is the greatest sprinter in the history of the the state of Alabama and his name is forever etched in the record books for being the fastest man in the world. In 1976 he he held the world record for the 100-meter dash and in 1978 he held the world record for the 100-yard dash. He still holds the Southeastern Conference record in the 220-yard dash and as part of Auburn’s 4x100 yard relay team.
