View my listings at www.atproperties.com/agents/2665/susan-ringel-segal DIRECTOR’S NOTE I’m no geologist, so bare with me…

Our foundation, the ground on which we stand, is made up of seven to eight large tectonic plates, and a number of smaller ones, that make up the lithosphere – or the rigid outermost shell of the planet. Underneath the lithosphere, the more volatile core of the earth has a degree of fluidity, not unlike a frozen over lake. Inertia says the plates want to stay in place, but the movement from the core wants them to pull apart and move creating, along these overlapping fault lines, remarkable pressure.

An earthquake occurs when the building pressure along these fault lines becomes too much and the plates succumb, letting go of their initial position and settling into a new one, wherein the process begins again, a constant evolution of pressure and release.

Some environmentalists see the climate through a similar lens. The earth has a place of balance that it wants to maintain. And then outside factors slowly move the earth’s environment away from its position of balance, creating increasing pressure. That increasing pressure is indicated by a rising global temperature, and increased severity of storms, and a rising sea level. And while, for a time, the environment will hold, eventually there will be a massive release that puts us back into original balance. Fossil records tell us that this has happened before, and data now indicates that we are fast approaching another.

I’m Midwestern, which means that generally, as a family, we don’t deal particularly directly with our problems. It’s somehow impolite to talk too much about anything that might be creating pressure on the relationship. This Christmas, with a wide political spectrum represented, and a sibling living at home with the parents, and a frightening injury we are still recovering from, there was, indeed, an increase to the normal pressure of the familial situation. And there were, indeed, some little earthquakes – momentary bursts coming, seemingly out of nowhere and startling the dinner table. Fortunately no irreparable release, but I could sense its presence and its inevitability.

One of the things that is remarkable to me about the outlook of many environmental scientists is that, despite the dire predictions of the impending environmental disaster, there remains, in many of them, a profound sense of hope. A pressure of opposites even there, looking at the destructive, self-interested failings of man while, at the same time, acknowledging our innate desire to effect positive change.

So – what then is our responsibility in all of these various situations? I like the term stewardship, or “the careful and responsible management of something entrusted to one’s care.” How do we tend to the world we’ve inherited, and how we tend to the relationships, familial and otherwise, where we’ve been entrusted with the heart of another and have power and sway over that person? We may not be able prevent, entirely, an impending earthquake but if it’s in our power to minimize it’s effect and protect the most vulnerable, isn’t that our duty? We have the power to effect change, on both the world and the people who inhabit it, I’d like to do what I can while still afforded the opportunity.

Thanks for coming. The production was named among the top ten shows of the year by TimeOut Chicago and the Chicago Sun-Times and among the top ten shows of the decade by Kelly Kleiman of WBEZ’s Dueling Critics. Over the years, the company has become a dedicated, close-knit group of thirty-four actors, directors, designers, and writers driven by a shared commitment to the organizations’s mission: To bring out the everyday truths in the stories we tell through ensemble work and to reach out to non-traditional theater goers by seeking out stories and creating experiences relevant to them. We believe theater should stoke conversations about the issues and conditions that are a part of all of our lives; conversations that take place among our artists and audiences in the theater, in the lobby, or long after everyone has gone home. Steep’s goal is more than just creating these conversations. Our goal is to add more voices to these conversations. We strive to reach people who may have abandoned theater as a relevant art form by telling stories that touch their lives in real and palpable ways and by creating an environment that is welcoming to everyone. By bringing these voices back to the theater, we hope to reinvigorate our conversations and ensure that theater is a viable, vital, and productive art form.
