THE MONADNOCK REGION: THE COOLEST PLACE YOU’VE NEVER HEARD OF

reetings … and welcome! GWe’re very pleased to bring you this edition of the Greater Keene Chamber of Commerce Monadnock Profile Guide and hope that you’ll find the information both interesting and useful. When I travel outside the region — whether in other parts of New Hampshire, around , or in other parts of the country — I often tell people, “it’s the coolest place you’ve never heard of.” In some ways, of Scott Hussey course, we like it like that. We like that we’re a little isolated, a little quieter than the city and suburbia, and a little off the beaten track. And yet we’re an easy distance from , New York, Hartford and even Montreal. We’re right in the center of New England. It’s the best of both worlds.

We have a long tradition of advanced manufacturing and other Bill Gnade high-tech employers; entrepreneurship; several outstanding colleges and GKCC Staff, left to right: Nancy Bishop, Phil Suter, Christine Hadlow, universities; excellent healthcare; a vibrant arts, culture and culinary Deb Hathaway, Phyllis Custer scene; and some of the most beautiful scenery, wildlife and recreational opportunities anywhere on earth. We’re mostly Red Sox, Patriots, Bruins and Celtics fans, although the occasional Yankees, Cubs or Steelers fan is spotted (and we welcome the rivalries). We’re humble, and we’re proud. We argue a little — just go to About us a town meeting — but we do it respectfully and collaboratively. We want to preserve our agricultural heritage. We want to go green. We love a good festival. And locals will greet you with a friendly “good morning” on the street. Spend a few days visiting our region’s charming “big city,” Keene (population: 23,406), and then spend time meandering along winding tree- lined roads that lead to small towns and villages that dot our many hills and valleys. The interior of the home offers a sophisticated warmth, says Kimball Frank. “I have kept the rooms very simple, as I believe beauty lies in the architecture itself.” High ceilings and large windows allow for ample light. The classic and stylish furnishings are a blend of antiques and found items. The rooms have retained most of their original configurations with the additions of private bathrooms in the guest rooms. The 5,000-square-foot building, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, divides naturally into two parts — a private residence for the owner and a full separate living space for the bed and breakfast. Guests have a private entrance with living room, pantry and breakfast room on the main floor, and four guest rooms with private baths on the second floor. n 2017, U.S. News and World Report ranked New Hampshire the #2 best state to live in the nation. IOne of the reasons New Hampshire (and the Monadnock Region) ranks high is because of its healthy and active population. Why are we, as a population, so healthy? Maybe it has to do with the opportunities to exercise in nature — the state, after all, leads the nation in forested land (89 percent). We also have many opportunities to encourage those who are healthy to remain healthy; and many organizations and services to help if there is a health challenge. And here, in the Monadnock Region, there is another important element to health: A caring community that is there to help one another in times of need. Howard Printing, Inc. Howard

e don’t make a big deal about what makes the Monadnock Region suchW a great place to “play” … but we should! The most climbed mountain in the world, Mt. Monadnock, is visible from many towns in the region and easily accessible. Our thriving arts community (the percentage of solo artists per capita is higher than the national average) is visible everywhere. This creativity is an essential component of our local economy: A recent study found that nonprofit arts and culture organizations surveyed generate millions of dollars in annual economic activity in the Monadnock Region — supporting more than 500 full-time equivalent jobs and generating nearly $2 million in local and state government revenues (according to the Arts & Economic Prosperity 5 national economic impact study).
