CEO’s column Agreement on public use of Racecourse centre

Glen Eira Sports and Aquatic Centre (GESAC) has been designed to fit the needs of the Glen Eira community. That is why it has a larger than normal warm-water rehabilitation pool (200 square metres); a larger than normal gym (1,000 square metres); a separate learn-to-swim pool so kids don’t have to wait for one of the other pools to become free; two waterslides that start and finish indoors so they can be used even on the coldest and wettest days; three indoor netball/ basketball courts which are in short supply in our region; a 21 place occasional care facility; a wellness centre for physiotherapy; and other health services. Learn-to-swim mascot Captain Swimalot has been announced as GESAC’s learn-to-swim mascot. A competition to name the mascot was held during Glen Eira City Council’s Party in the Park series earlier this year. Rachel Averbukh and Caterina Slade both came up with the name, which ties in with GESAC’s leisure pool Caribbean theme. Captain Swimalot is looking forward to GESAC opening later this year and teaching children how to swim. Learn-to-swim enrolments will commence closer to the opening of GESAC. To register your interest, visit www.gesac.com.au and click on Membership and swim school. Those that register their details will be the first to be contacted and offered never-to-be-repeated foundation specials.

Party in the Park winners Congratulations to John Scalzo, Wendy Ellist and Penny Armes who have each won a free 12 month membership to GESAC. John, Wendy and Penny visited GESAC’s information stand at Council’s Party in the Park series and by simply registering their details, went into the running to win a free membership. Thank you Penny Armes, GESAC number one ticket holder Nicole Livingstone, GESAC mascot Captain Swimalot, John Scalzo, to everyone who registered. Caterina and Caitlin Slade and Rachel Averbukh. Thursday 16 June, 7pm– 8pm Glen Eira To w n Hall — Theatrette, corner Glen Eira and Hawthorn Roads, Caulfield Mary Delahunty has spent much of her life in the public eye; first as a high profile television journalist and then as a Minister in the Victorian Government. Last year, Mary published Public Life, Private Grief: a memoir of political life and loss which is part love story, part political memoir and a journey through loss and grief. It is a very personal story as she recounts the loss of her husband and father of their two children to cancer. This special event is a conversation on how a public figure copes with private grief. Mary is honest and entertaining about her mistakes, her political unravelling and the understanding of a new life after politics. Mary will discuss writing her story, about what can happen when one’s personal and professional lives collide and the unforgiving nature of politics. This event is free, but bookings are required. Bookings can be made at any library, by calling 9524 3623 or online at www.gleneira.vic.gov.au and click on Library. You can buy a copy of Mary’s book on the evening at the discount price of $25 for cash sales.
