Royal Brompton has a pressing need for new and improved facilities to create a state-of- the-art environment that supports 21st century patient care Read more about Our future, your care our vision inside Building a better Royal Brompton for heart and lung patients A new and improved hospital will enable us to…

Treat more patients and save more lives We face a growing demand for the highly specialist care we provide. In the past five years, patient numbers have increased by nearly 25 per cent. New and improved hospital facilities providing additional inpatient beds, and almost double the number of operating theatres, will mean we can meet demand, treat more patients and save more lives.

Create a better environment for patients Some of our facilities are cramped and outdated making it difficult to accommodate life-saving equipment, provide bedside care and ensure a comfortable experience for inpatients. With up to 30 per cent more hospital space, there will be more single, en-suite rooms, reducing the risk of infection, and providing greater privacy for seriously ill patients and their visitors.

Remove obstacles to better patient care Patients will no longer be transported between buildings by ambulance because all our services will be together on a single Sydney Street site. Specialist equipment, such as scanners, will be next to clinical services rather than split across multiple sites in Chelsea.

Maximise innovation, research and education Royal Brompton has a world-leading reputation for innovation, research and education. Modern facilities will ensure we keep up with advances in technology, treatments and care, and guarantee we can recruit, develop and retain the best medical professionals. “We operate on some of the most seriously ill babies and children with heart disease. This is a very stressful time for parents and families. We do everything we can to support them too, but often what people need is space and some privacy and it can be very difficult to provide this in the facilities that we have.”

Mr Olivier Ghez Consultant paediatric cardiac surgeon The challenges we face every day

Our staff do an amazing job for patients every single day. But, our existing facilities present us with real challenges.

A new and improved hospital will enable us to provide better patient care and treat more people, more quickly, so they spend less time in hospital and more time at home with their loved ones.

Current challenges:

• There is very little privacy for patients and • There is not enough space at patient their families as wards are cramped. bedsides to easily accommodate modern monitoring equipment, or even basic • Although there are some single, en- equipment like wheelchairs and hoists. suite rooms, many patients have to share bathrooms, and some have to walk down • Services are split across our multiple long corridors to reach them. • We have an excellent record in infection prevention, but lack of space makes this a much greater challenge than it would be in a modern, purpose-built environment. “As a patient at , you appreciate the great medical care. However, the hospital’s buildings are now tired and not suitable for a hospital in the 21st century. Even the relatively new Sydney Wing has only a very few individual rooms and no air conditioning. It is essential that patients enjoy the privacy afforded by a private room and be able to have friends and family visit without fear of disturbing others.”
