Southwold Remembers ... 2005 Year of the Veteran Southwold Remembers ... 2005 Year of the Veteran 2005 Year of the Veteran 60 years since end of wwn The Federal Government of Canada has declared 2005 the Year of the Veteran. The purpose is to honour veterans of WWI , WWII, Korean War, as well as veterans of the Canadian Forces and still serving members. The tribute also includes civilians who worked with the military and those active on the home front during both World Wars. The overall aim is to celebrate, honour, remember and to teach the present generation. We are proud to be flying the specially designed Year of the Veteran flag at the Southwold Keystone Complex. While visiting a cemetery in Ayr, Lome Spicer observed that a 2" x 2" metal plate with a picture of 1 poppy was attached to Veterans' tombstones. After many inquiries, Noble Tufford was able to have the Pt. Stanley Legion order the 3" x 3" metal plates with 2 poppies entwined with a gold maple leaf for our Committee. Pat Temple is attempting to find Veterans' family to obtain permission to adhere the metal plate to all Southwold Township Veterans' tombstones at no cost to any family. At present, in each of the Southwold Cemeteries, one or more stones have the metal plates attached. Nothing is allowed to be attached to a stone the Government has erected. Please notify a Soutbwold War Memorial Committee Member today, if you know of a relative who was a Veteran that should have a metal plate attached to his/her tombstone. We need to have written permission. Our goal is to honour every deceased Veteran in Soutbwold Township. PROGRAM Memorial Site Keystone Complex M.C. Reacting to the medium’s growing significance, members of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) accepted that they had a wartime responsibility to maintain civilian morale. The CBC thus unequivocally supported the national cause throughout all levels of its organization. Its senior administrations and programmers directed the CBC’s efforts to aid the Canadian war effort.

Vice Admiral (ret’d) Hugh MacNeil, Chair of the Canadian Naval Memorial Trust welcomed guests and trustees, including Rear Admiral David Gardam, Commander Maritime Forces Atlantic and Joint Task Force Atlantic; naval historian Roger Sarty, the guest speaker and Commander (ret’d) Rowland Marshall. Dr. Sarty outlined the significance of the Battle of the Atlantic, its impact on the Atlantic region and the St. Lawrence and Canada’s major contribution to the Allied victory at sea. Cdr Marshall, a retired Saint Mary’s University professor and long-time trustee reflected on his wartime experience as a young sailor. A number of presentations were made to Wendall Brown for his unstinting service to SACKVILLE and the Trust over the years. These included the Maritime Command Commendation which was presented by RAdm Gardam. A number of speakers noted Wendall’s ‘roll up your sleeves’ involvement in all aspects of ship operations, from the bridge to the engine room as well as his ‘good fortune’ on behalf of Canada’s Naval Memorial when making the rounds of Dockyard shops and services. 1 Cdr Brown has turned over command of SACKVILLE to Lieutenant Commander Jim Reddy who has been actively involved with the ship since retiring from the Navy in 2003, including serving as First Lieutenant (XO).

Canadian Official Historians and the Writing of the World Wars Tim Cook BA Hons (Trent), War Studies (RMC) This thesis is submitted in fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy School of Humanities and Social Sciences UNSW@ADFA 2005 Acknowledgements Sir Winston Churchill described the act of writing a book as to surviving a long and debilitating illness. As with all illnesses, the afflicted are forced to rely heavily on many to see them through their suffering. Thanks must go to my joint supervisors, Dr. Jeffrey Grey and Dr. Steve Harris. Dr. Grey agreed to supervise the thesis having only met me briefly at a conference. With the unenviable task of working with a student more than 10,000 kilometres away, he was harassed by far too many lengthy emails emanating from Canada. He allowed me to carve out the thesis topic and research with little constraints, but eventually reined me in and helped tighten and cut down the thesis to an acceptable length. Closer to home, Dr. Harris has offered significant support over several years, leading back to my first book, to which he provided careful editorial and historical advice. He has supported a host of other historians over the last two decades, and is the finest public historian working in Canada. His expertise at balancing the trials of writing official history and managing ongoing crises at the Directorate of History and Heritage are a model for other historians in public institutions, and he took this dissertation on as one more burden. I am a far better historian for having known him.
