Thoughts from the FIRST SEASON of the GDYO Jazz Institute:

My best memory is being able to meet other musicians who have the same mind as myself towards jazz. They understand the need to practice and listen...being able to experience that with people my age is amazing. I’ve made so many new friends from this experience!

…The program taught me so much about jazz improvisation/ chords/voicings etc. The best thing about this institute is their faculty...some of the best teachers who put their heart and experience into teaching the art of jazz. Also, the other talented students that you meet at GDYO help you to learn and be inspired. I loved every second spent at GDYO Jazz Institute, and I hope it grows more in the coming year…Very thankful! Year of the Flute We somewhat jokingly named this the Year of the Flute, and we will tell you why... There was a boom in the flute activity this year in the Dallas area, and GDYO was a big part of it. It was not planned, but it was so rich and varied that we can’t help but share it all with you. Here are some of the many flute-specific activities and performances from this season (the activities in italics were presented by other organizations): 2014 • Sept 13, Jean Larson Garver, retired Dallas Symphony Orchestra Principal Flute, was one of the judges for the Greater Dallas Youth Orchestra concerto competition. • Sept 23, Well-known for his rock/pop/folk Flute playing, Ian Anderson performed with Jethro Tull. • Oct 15, Demarre McGill, Dallas Symphony Orchestra Principal Flute, led a masterclass that was open to all GDYO members. • Oct 19, GDYO Flute Choir presented their season opening performance in Frisco. • Oct 19, Voices of Change season opener, three of five pieces featured flute. • Oct 26, GDYO Flute Choir provided pre-concert music for the Greater Dallas Youth Orchestra season opener, and Demarre McGill, Dallas Symphony Orchestra Principal Flute, was the featured soloist with the Greater Dallas Youth Orchestra. • Dec 17, GDYO Flute Choir provided pre-concert music for the Greater Dallas Youth Orchestra holiday concert.

2015 • Mar 6, GDYO Flute Choir presented a concert featuring Dr. James Scott, Dean of the School of Music for the University of North Texas and classically trained flutist. • May 3, GDYO Flute Choir presented their spring concert at the First United Methodist Church in Denton. • May 30—Project Trio performed with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. This is bass, flute, and ensemble is made up of , , Eric Stephenson—Peter is a GDYO alumnus.

Our 6 Jazz Institute combos performed Sunday evening, May 3, at Sambuca restaurant in downtown Dallas. You can't learn how to play jazz by About 250 people filled the restaurant, much to the taking a few classes. You have to develop a manager’s surprise. It was a highly successful evening ravenous passion that you feed by listening, with the intermediate combos demonstrating much transcribing, composing etc.- in essence, progress since their February concert and the advance obsessing on the music above and beyond any combos playing better than ever. assignments you are given. If you have this passion and nurture it, you will likely succeed After the concert, one parent wrote: both as an artist and as a human being. My child learned more in once a week sessions than a whole year at school. It made him a better musician- - Paul McKee more dedicated. He never wanted to miss a week. The instructors and staff are genuine and get excited about the students –we need more of that in the world.
