  • Ethnobotany of Ladakh (India) Plants Used in Health Care
    T. Ethnobivl, 8(2);185-194 Winter 1988 ETHNOBOTANY OF LADAKH (INDIA) PLANTS USED IN HEALTH CARE G. M. BUTH and IRSHAD A. NAVCHOO Department of Botany University of Kashmir Srinagar 190006 India ABSTRACf.-This paper puts on record the ethnobotanical information of some plants used by inhabitants of Ladakh (India) for medicine, A comparison of the uses of these plants in Ladakh and other parts of India reveal that 21 species have varied uses while 19 species are not reported used. INTRODUCTION Ladakh (elev. 3000-59G(}m), the northernmost part of India is one of the most elevated regions of the world with habitation up to 55(}(}m. The general aspect is of barren topography. The climate is extremely dry with scanty rainfall and very little snowfall (Kachroo et al. 1976). The region is traditionally rich in ethnic folklore and has a distinct culture as yet undisturbed by external influences. The majority of the population is Buddhist and follow their own system of medicine, which has been in vogue for centuries and is extensively practiced. It offers interesting insight into an ancient medical profession. The system of medicine is the"Amchi system" (Tibetan system) and the practi tioner, an"Amchi." The system has something in common with the "Unani" (Greek) and"Ayurvedic" (Indian) system of medicine. Unani is the traditional system which originated in the middle east and was followed and developed in the Muslim world; whereas the Ayurvedic system is that followed by Hindus since Rig vedic times. Both are still practiced in India. Though all the three systems make USe of herbs (fresh and dry), minerals, animal products, etc., the Amchi system, having evolved in its special environment, has its own characteristics.

  • Stok Kangri Expedition Towering at an Impressive 6153 M, Stok Kangri Is a Serious Challenge
Stok Kangri Expedition Towering at an impressive 6153 m, Stok Kangri is a serious challenge. Although at such an impressive height, it is not a technical climb and in season requires no advanced mountaineering equipment. We work our way up to base camp over a number of days to maximize acclimatization and improve chances of a successful summit attempt. The view from the top is one of the best in the Himalaya offering great views of the Zanskar and Karakoram ranges including K2 (8611 m), the second highest peak in the world. This is one of the most popular trekking peaks in the Indian Himalayas and it's proximity to Leh makes it very accessible. Recommend for those wishes to climb a non-technical 6000 m peak. DAY 01: Delhi - Leh (3500 m): 1 hr. flight Take the short flight to Leh, the capital of Ladakh. This is an incredible flight over the greater Himalayas with spectacular views of K2 among others, to one of the world's highest airports. We spend the day in Leh to acclimatize. Take the time to explore the monasteries and markets, or just relax at the hotel. Overnight hotel. DAY 02: Leh We spend the day in Leh for further acclimatization. We go on a short-day hike to practice exercising at this elevation. Marvel at Stok Kangri which is perched on the other side of the valley and begin to measure the size of the challenge ahead. Overnight hotel. DAY 03: Leh - Zingchan (3900 m): 5/6hrs We take a one-hour drive to Spitok, the closest road access to Stok Kangri.

  • Eco-Rehabilitation of Tribal Villages Through Innovative Design in Water
Eco-Rehabilitation of tribal villages through Innovative design in water management using Ice-stupa, promoting Farm-stay tourism and passive solar heating system- Joint Inititative of Tribal Affairs and Secmol in Leh The “roof of the world”, the metaphorical description for the physio-geographic region encompassing the Indian Himalayas, is the site of vast freshwater glaciers and the primary source of the major Asian rivers that have sustained life since early human civilisations have inhabited the area. In modern times, these freshwater glaciers are still the primary source of water, and thus the welfare, for over a billion Asian people, especially for the tribal communities of Ladakh who have been perpetually dependent on glacial meltwater in the high-altitude desert. Lying on the northerly fringes of the Himalayan watershed, Ladakh is characterised by distinct geographical and climatic features. Known as a cold desert, Ladakh covers area of 96701 km2 and with an average elevation of 3000 m, having annual annual precipitation100 mm, and extreme temperatures ranges (-30 to 30 Co). Much of the province remains in a cold spell from October-March, with only a third of the year left for agrarian purposes. The villages in the region are settled in small oases in the barren desert, on the banks of a stream, or amongst springs utilising the summertime meltwater. Regardless of its ecosystem services and historical context, reckless human interventions and global climate change have impacted the region immeasurably, in particular due to the escalated rate of warming at higher altitudes. Currently, Himalayan glaciers are receding at an alarming rate, from a few to tens of meters annually.

I have the privilege of forwarding the fi eld guide on mammals of Ladakh which is part of a series of bilingual (English and Ladakhi) fi eld guides developed by WWF-India. It is not just because of my involvement in the conservation issues of the state of Jammu & Kashmir, but I am impressed with the Ladakhi version of the Field Guide. As the Field Guide has been specially produced for the local youth, I hope that the Guide will help in conserving the unique mammal species of Ladakh. I also hope that the Guide will become a companion for every nature lover visiting Ladakh. I commend the efforts of the authors in bringing out this unique publication. • H E M I S - T S O K a R , Par Le K H a R N a K
