  • "On the Relations of Canaanite Exploration to Pre-Historic Classic
176 ON THE RELATIONS OF CANAANITE EXPLORATION These inecriptions, and the bas-reliefs on the monument called Kamna Hurmill, in Crelo-Syria, near the source of the Orontes, and possibly of the same pe1·iod, are an enigma, as yet, to the most learned Orientaliots. It is to be hoped, however, now that attention is again called to the subject, that the clue may be found that shall unlock their meaning, and that Northern 8yI"ia will be no longer overlooked by tho explorer. DISCOVERY AT THE l\IOSQUE EL AKS.A, JERUSALEM.-llo A DISCOVERY of considerable interest has been made in this :Mosque by the Rev. J. Neil, who has only recently gone to Jerusalem for the Society for the Conversion of the Jews. "In the Mosque of El Aksa," he writes, "you will remember that there is a long plain room opening out at the south-east angle, called the Mosque of Omar, in which the only object of interest whatever is a recess supported by two twisted pillars, and called the Mihrab, or Praying-place of Omar. You may, perhaps, remember that the pillars on each side of this recess, of Solomonic twisted pattern and polished marble, appear to have been turned upside down, and to have their capitals of greyish stone in broken leaf-like patterns below. On vi~iting this the day before yesterday, July 5th, I discovered that a great part of the yellowish plaster had been removed from the top of these pillars, and that rich grotesquely carved capitals were exposed to view in an admirable state of preserva tion.

  • Heckelphone / Bass Oboe Repertoire
Heckelphone / Bass Oboe Repertoire by Peter Hurd; reorganized and amended by Holger Hoos, editor-in-chief since 2020 version 1.2 (21 March 2021) This collection is based on the catalogue of musical works requiring heckelphone or bass oboe instrumen- tation assembled by Peter Hurd beginning in 1998. For this new edition, the original version of the repertoire list has been edited for accuracy, completeness and consistency, and it has been extended with a number of newly discovered pieces. Some entries could not (yet) be rigorously verified for accuracy; these were included nonetheless, to provide leads for future investigation, but are marked clearly. Pieces were selected for inclusion based solely on the use of heckelphone, bass oboe or lupophone, without any attempt at assessing their artistic merit. Arrangements of pieces not originally intended for these instruments were included when there was clear evidence that they had found a significant audience. The authors gratefully acknowledge contributions by Michael Finkelman, Alain Girard, Thomas Hiniker, Robert Howe, Gunther Joppig, Georg Otto Klapproth, Mark Perchanok, Andrew Shreeves and Michael Sluman. SZÁZADI ÉS A KORTÁRS ZENÉBEN SALVI NÓRA TÉMAVEZETŐ: JENEY ZOLTÁN DLA DOKTORI ÉRTEKEZÉS 2011 10.18132/LFZE.2012.21 SALVI NÓRA KELET-ÁZSIAI DUPLANÁDAS HANGSZEREK ÉS A HICHIRIKI HASZNÁLATA A 20. SZÁZADI ÉS A KORTÁRS ZENÉBEN DLA DOKTORI ÉRTEKEZÉS 2011 Absztrakt A disszertáció megírásában a fő motiváció a hiánypótlás volt, hiszen a kelet-ázsiai régió duplanádas hangszereiről nincs átfogó, ismeretterjesztő tudományos munka sem magyarul, sem más nyelveken. A hichiriki olyan hangszer, mely nagyjából eredeti formájában maradt fenn a 7. századtól napjainkig.

  • And Eastern Monophysitism
Athens Journal of History - Volume 1, Issue 4 – Pages 267-288 The Political and Social Conflict between Orthodox Christianity (Constantinople and Rome) and Eastern Monophysitism By Jayoung Che The 4th Ecumenical Council of Chalcedon (431) denounced Eutychianism/Monophysitism as a heresy. Rushdoony suggested that the Chalcedonian formula made Western liberty possible because the unity and particularity (or individuality) firmly grounded in the triune God freed man from the oppression of the state. In my opinion, however, even the triune God does not always refer to everybody’s liberty, but could degenerate into an instrument protecting the privileged. The so called universalism exploited by some Byzantine emperors or most senatorial aristocrats refers to the enforcement of the religious dogma; the former preferred Monophysitism for consolidating autocratic imperial power, and the latter the Chalcedonian formula for securing their liberty against the emperors’ despotism. Enforcing whichever kind of religious dogma denotes the degeneration of the Byzantine Society towards an exclusive, privileged society. Contrary to religious exclusivism, there was a type of Christianity which was more universal and open- minded, not only towards heretics but even to the pagans. Introduction As Constantine the Great promulgated the Edict of Milan (313 AD), the Hellenic-Roman traditions and the various sects of Christianity began to co- exist legally. Actually, however, the universalism of Christianity allowed it to open its mind towards the so called pagans

  • Woodwind Doubling for the 21St-Century Saxophonist
WOODWID DOUBLIG FOR THE 21 ST -CETURY SAXOPHOIST Increasing Versatility without Sacrificing Virtuosity Dr. Bret Pimentel Assistant Professor of Woodwinds, Delta State University SELECT YOUR WEAPO (S) Saxophone with flute and/or clarinet is the classic double; still a great way to improve your employability. If you already play flute well, consider adding piccolo. Bass clarinet can be a valuable double, too, especially for a baritone saxophonist. Double reeds are not easy (or cheap) but can really pay off for dedicated doublers. There are a few common double-reed doubling situations in musical theater, especially oboe (and maybe English horn) with tenor saxophone and clarinet, and bassoon with bass clarinet and baritone saxophone. More and more, doublers are being called upon to play folk, ethnic, and period instruments in pit orchestras and recording studios. For a collection of instruments that are relatively easy to play, inexpensive, and versatile, I suggest investing in various sizes of the high-quality plastic recorders (Yamaha, Aulos) and pennywhistles (Susato), and maybe some bamboo or PVC simple-system flutes. Other good possibilities include the shakuhachi (Japanese endblown flute), dizi (Chinese transverse flute), duduk (Armenian double reed), and panflutes (Romanian, South American). GET SOME SKILLS Start from the beginning. You NEED to do long tones, scales and arpeggios, and beginning methods/etudes on each instrument. No shortcuts! Suggested materials: Flute: Trevor Wye Practice Books (especially Book 1: Tone ), Taffanel and Gaubert 17 Daily Exercises . Oboe: Barret Oboe Method Complete (I like the Kalmus edition). Clarinet: from the Klosé Celebrated Method: “68 Exercises of mechanism,” “Practical exercises,” and “Scales and exercises;” Rose 32 Etudes .

An Annotated Bibliography of Canadian Oboe Concertos Document Presented in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Musical Arts in Oboe in the Performance Studies Division of the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music January 11, 2016 by Elizabeth E. Eccleston M02515809 B.M., Wilfrid Laurier University, 2004 M.M., University of Cincinnati, 2007 D.M.A. Candidacy: April 5, 2012 256 Major Street Toronto, Ontario M5S 2L6 Canada [email protected] ____________________________ Dr. Mark Ostoich, Advisor ____________________________ Dr. Glenn Price, Reader ____________________________ Professor Lee Fiser, Reader Copyright by Elizabeth E. Eccleston 2016 i Abstract: Post-World War II in Canada was a time during which major organizations were born to foster the need for a sense of Canadian cultural identity. The Canada Council for the Arts, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and the Canadian Music Centre led the initiative for commissioning, producing, and disseminating this Canadian musical legacy. Yet despite the wealth of repertoire created since then, the contemporary music of Canada is largely unknown both within and outside its borders. This annotated bibliography serves as a concise summary and evaluative resource into the breadth of concertos and solo works written for oboe, oboe d’amore, and English horn, accompanied by an ensemble. The document examines selected pieces of significance from the mid-twentieth century to present day. Entries discuss style and difficulty using the modified rating system developed by oboist Dr. Sarah J. Hamilton. In addition, details of duration, instrumentation, premiere/performance history, including dedications, commissions, program notes, reviews, publisher information and recordings are included wherever possible.

  • Flore De Guinée: Appellations Vernaculaires Et Usages Traditionnels De Quelques Plantes
FLORE DE GUINÉE: APPELLATIONS VERNACULAIRES ET USAGES TRADITIONNELS DE QUELQUES PLANTES Par: Marc CARRIÈRE (Avril 2000).

The name is taken from that of the principal treble double-reed instrument of Western art music (see §II below). I. General 1. Oboes. The AULOS of ancient Greece may sometimes have had a double reed, and some kind of reed aerophone was known in North Africa in pre-Islamic times. Instruments of the SURNĀY type became established with the spread of the Arab empire around the end of the first millennium CE; they were possibly a synthesis of types from Iran, Mesopotamia, Syria and Asia Minor. From there the instrument, then used in a military role, spread into conquered areas and areas of influence: to India, and later, under the Ottoman empire, to Europe (around the time of the fifth crusade, 1217–21; there may already have been bagpipes with double reeds there) and further into Asia (to China in the 14th century). As the instrument spread, it came to be made of local materials and fashioned according to local preferences in usage, shape and decoration: the ŚAHNĀĪ of north India has a flared brass bell; the SARUNAI of Sumatra has a palm leaf reed and a bell of wood or buffalo horn; the ALGAITA of West Africa is covered with leather and has four or five finger-holes.

  • A HISTORY of the OBOE from ANTIQUITY to 1750 Thies IS
379 A HISTORY OF THE OBOE FROM ANTIQUITY TO 1750 THiES IS Presented to the Graduate Council of the North Texas State College in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements For the Degree of MASTER OF ARTS by Perry 0. Stephens, B. M. E. McKinney, Texas August, 1955 PEFACE The purpose of this study is to trace the development of the oboe and its use from the primitive double reed instruments to the oboes of the Baroque Period. Toward the end of this period the oboe became thoroughly established as an important section in the symphony orchestra and has remained so to the present time. The history of the oboe is not a clearly defined one since it dates from antiquity and has developed with other double reed instruments such as the bagpipe. There have been recent attempts to assimilate the per- formance of music of the Baroque and earlier periods. There- fore, the quality of the sound and the limitations of the instruments must be considered in order to achieve an accu- rate reproduction of the performance. It is in this area that this study should be of some benefit. The writer is primarily concerned with documentary references to the genesis of the oboe. iii TABLE OF CONTENTS Page PRFACE.. .. ... iii LIST OF ILTTTiOK. * v LIST OF PLATES . vii Chapter I. • Antik Çağlarda Doğu Karadeniz
A n t i k Ç a ğ l a r d a DOĞU KARADENİZ Ahmet Mican Zehiroğlu İstanbul 1999 Giriş [email protected] Karadeniz'in güneydoğu sahilleri ile ilgili ilk yazõlõ kayõtlar Urartu dönemi ile birlikte başlar ve bu dönem, aynõ zamanda bölge yazõlõ tarihinin de başlangõcõ sayõlõr. Örneğin, MS.6. yüzyõlda Doğu Karadeniz'i bizzat
