PRESS RELEASE Shakespeare’s Globe Announces Full Casting for Nick Bagnall’s Love’s Labour’s Lost 17 JULY 2018 Shakespeare’s Globe is delighted to announce full casting for Nick Bagnall’s Love’s Labour’s Lost, opening in the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse on Thursday 23 August. Dharmesh Patel will play Berowne. Dharmesh returns to the Globe after starring in Barrie Rutter's The Captive Queen in the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse earlier this year. Other recent theatre credits include Titus Andronicus, Antony and Cleopatra and Julius Caesar (RSC), The Two Gentlemen of Verona and The Tempest (Shakespeare's Globe). Kirsty Woodward is Princess of France. Kirsty appeared at The Globe in last year’s touring production of Tristan & Yseult, and has also appeared in Globe productions of Pericles and The Winter’s Tale. Her recent television work includes Bad Move (ITV) and Quacks (BBC). Paul Stocker will play King of Navarre, returning to the Globe after appearing as Palamon in Barrie Rutter's The Two Noble Kinsmen earlier this summer. Paul’s other theatre credits include The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time (West End), Coral, A Thousand Stars Explode in the Sky (National Theatre Studio) and A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Regent’s Park). Television work includes Doctors, EastEnders and The Rack Pack (BBC). Jade Williams is Rosaline. Jade has appeared in several Globe productions including Matthew Dunster's Doctor Faustus, Raz Shaw's God of Soho and Jessica Swale's Bedlam. Commerce and Exchange Buildings Listing Selection Guide Summary Historic England’s twenty listing selection guides help to define which historic buildings are likely to meet the relevant tests for national designation and be included on the National Heritage List for England. Listing has been in place since 1947 and operates under the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990. If a building is felt to meet the necessary standards, it is added to the List. This decision is taken by the Government’s Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS). These selection guides were originally produced by English Heritage in 2011: slightly revised versions are now being published by its successor body, Historic England. The DCMS‘ Principles of Selection for Listing Buildings set out the over-arching criteria of special architectural or historic interest required for listing and the guides provide more detail of relevant considerations for determining such interest for particular building types. The first defines the types of structures included in it, before going on to give a brisk overview of their characteristics and how these developed through time, with notice of the main architects and representative examples of buildings. A select bibliography gives suggestions for further reading. This guide treats commercial buildings. Westminster’s Conservation Areas - Character Overview Westminster has 56 designated conservation areas which cover over 76% of the City. These cover a diverse range of townscapes from all periods of the City’s development and their distinctive character reflects Westminster’s differing roles at the heart of national life and government, as a business and commercial centre, and as home to diverse residential communities. A significant number are more residential areas often dominated by Georgian and Victorian terraced housing but there are also conservation areas which are focused on enclaves of later housing development, including innovative post-war housing estates. Some of the conservation areas in south Westminster are dominated by government and institutional uses and in mixed central areas such as Soho and Marylebone, it is the historic layout and the dense urban character combined with the mix of uses which creates distinctive local character. Despite its dense urban character, however, more than a third of the City is open space and our Royal Parks are also designated conservation areas. Many of Westminster’s conservation areas have a high proportion of listed buildings and some contain townscape of more than local significance. Below provides a brief summary overview of the character of each of these areas and their designation dates. The conservation area audits and other documentation listed should be referred to for more detail on individual areas. 1. Adelphi The Adelphi takes its name from the 18th Century development of residential terraces by the Adam brothers and is located immediately to the south of the Strand. The southern boundary of the conservation area is the former shoreline of the Thames. -

There are now 53 conservation areas in Westminster, covering 76% of the City. These conservation areas are the subject of detailed policies in the Unitary Development Plan and in Supplementary Planning Guidance. In addition to the basic activity of designation and the formulation of general policy, the City Council is required to undertake conservation area appraisals and to devise local policies in order to protect the unique character of each area. Although this process was first undertaken with the various designation reports, more recent national guidance (as found in Planning Policy Guidance Note 15 and the English Heritage Conservation Area Practice and Conservation Area Appraisal documents) requires detailed appraisals of each conservation area in the form of formally approved and published documents. This enhanced process involves the review of original designation procedures and boundaries; analysis of historical development; identification of all listed buildings and those unlisted buildings making a positive contribution to an area; and the identification and description of key townscape features, including street patterns, trees, open spaces and building types. -

Westminster Cathedral Organ Scholarship
WESTMINSTER CATHEDRAL ORGAN SCHOLARSHIP Westminster Cathedral intends to appoint a post-graduate Organ Scholar with effect from 1 September 2018. The scholarship is normally tenable for one year and is fully residential. The duties and responsibilities of the scholar are extensive and amount to a full-time role within the music department. Westminster Cathedral is the principal Roman Catholic cathedral of England and Wales and is the seat of the Cardinal Archbishop of Westminster. Its world-famous choir is one of the three fully professional choral foundations in London and choral services take place every day. It is the only Roman Catholic cathedral in the country with a residential choir school. The Organ Scholar works within the music department, which consists of the Master of Music, Assistant Master of Music and the Music Administrators. He or she is provided with full board and lodging in the Cathedral Clergy House, and receives a stipend (currently £4,798; this increases each year) and additional fees for special services, such as weddings. Organ tuition fees incurred during the year of the scholarship will be reimbursed to an agreed level. The Cathedral organs are available for practice. The scholarship is usually awarded to post-graduates who hold at least the diploma of Associate of the Royal College of Organists (or equivalent standard), and who intend to seek a career in church music. The scholarship will be of particular interest to those who seek to further their experience of music within the Roman Catholic liturgy. Background to the formation of The Savoy Gastronomes Founded 1971 Re-compiled by Founding Member Julian L Payne August 2014 Aim of the Amicale is “To foster the spirit of the Savoy Reception” Historical note To put this aim into context it is necessary to understand the background of the functioning of the Reception Office in earlier years. This department of the hotel had manual control over every arrival, departure and room allocation of the 526 rooms that the Savoy had. It was often the final department that aspiring hoteliers reached as part of their management training, having been through many other stages to reach this pinnacle. The daytime dress code was very formal. Stiff collars, subdued ties, waistcoats, tailcoats and pinstriped trousers, black lace up shoes and black socks. At 4.30 pm when the evening brigade arrived it was Black Tie, dinner jacket, with the two Night Managers wearing the same when they arrived at 11.30 pm. Those on the late brigade often met up in Southampton Street, just across the road, for a cup of tea from a small mobile tea stall and if the evening had been personally financially rewarding a bacon sandwich. Tips were pooled by the whole brigade and divided out at the end of the week on a points system. Brigades comprised of three or four young men who stayed in the department for at least a year; there was a very defined hierarchy with the “lowest” entrant stuck for hours “under the stairs” sharpening pencils or answering the very busy telephones. -

By the late 18th Century, Wapping made London one of the busiest ports in the world. The building of The London Docks transformed a small riverside village into one of the liveliest districts in the Capital. Wapping was a gateway to the British Empire, a commercial centre and a mix of cultural influences. Celebrated figures made their home here, like explorer and captain of the Endeavour, James Cook. A resident of Wapping in the 1750s, he later became the first European to master the east coast of Australia. Wapping was also home to artists and writers. Charles Dickens drew inspiration from the area during visits to his godfather in nearby Limehouse. Much of what he saw of life in the docks and at the riverside became famous scenes in his books like Oliver Twist and Great Expectations.
