Words from the Chairman

Good Evening Ladies and Gentlemen.

Tonight, we welcome FA Vase finalists Cray Valley to The Belmont. We hope you have a pleasant stay and a safe trip back up the M2. Cray Valley have started their first season at this level very well with 10 points from their opening 5 games.

In the previous programme I touched on the away trip to Chalfont St. Peter on the 28th September. Seats are available on the coach priced at £10.00. We will be leaving the Belmont at 10:00. The team could really do with your support in cheering us into the next round of the trophy and a home tie against Ware.

On Saturday it was frustrating to concede such a late equaliser when it looked like we had the 3 points in the bag. Let’s see if we can get behind the team again tonight and cheer the boys over the line to secure our second home victory of the season.

Up the Oysters!

Steve

Blacky’s Blog

Good evening and a very welcome to all directors, staff and players from Cray Valley for this league match here at the Belmont tonight.

Kevin Watson and myself were team mates years ago and he comes here off of the back of a fantastic season. Not only winning the SCEFL league but coming so close to winning the FA Vase. They have started their season in the isthmian very strongly and I’ve no doubt it will be a tough fixture.

Saturday we entertained Hayward’s Heath and were 2 minutes away from claiming all 3 points. A very positive performance especially first half meant we were disappointed to only walk away with a point however Hayward’s Heath will no doubt be challenging for honours this season so I was pleased with our performance.

Like the opening match against Sittingbourne, we limited our opponents to just a single shot on target at the weekend and that came almost immediately after having an effort cleared off the line to finish the tie off. Frustratingly for us their player punished our missed opportunity and curled a sublime finish into the top corner. These are the very fine margains that aren’t quite falling our way but I cannot praise the players enough for their work ethic and attitude.

It was also pleasing to see the debut boys impress too. Marshall Wratten comes here from and is an extremely talented player who did really well for us and will continue to improve with more games under his belt. The same for John Ufuah who gives us another dimension within the squad and again I was pleased with how he performed.

Another excellent crowd Saturday sees our average attendance sitting above 350 and currently 2nd highest in the division. I cannot thank you enough for your marvellous support and I do hope we are able to keep that up. Producing an entertaining winning brand and style is obviously our target and one I hope you’ll enjoy.

Enjoy the game.

Up the Oysters

Biggsie’s Banter

Good Evening to you all. I welcome all from Cray Valley PM to the Belmont and hope they enjoy their visit. Have a safe journey home after the match.

I felt we were unlucky not to get the three points against Haywards Heath on Saturday. We certainly missed a few chances. The team played very well, and you can see the improvement. The two new players had a good debut.

We will be travelling to Chalfont St. Peter on Saturday 28th September the coach will be probably leaving the Belmont in Grimshill Road at about 10:00 am, keep an eye on the website for any updates. The cost will be £10.00 per head. I have put something in this programme regarding it but as I said watch the website.

The new printer is running well and doing a good job with the programmes. Any thoughts would be most appreciated.

After tonight’s game we have three away fixtures unless we draw at Chalfont then we obviously would have the re-play on the 1st. October. That would then mean another change in fixtures so keep updated with the web.

Another tough game tonight so get behind the team and roar them on. Lloyd is putting together a good bunch of lads who are working well together and creating a great changing room atmosphere.

That’s all for tonight except #Come on you Reds#

Les

Canterbury Suzuki sponsors FA Cup game Whitstable Town vs Folkestone Invicta

Canterbury Suzuki Supports Whitstable Town Football Club

Whitstable Town had the pleasure of welcoming Canterbury Suzuki as match day sponsors for the FA Cup game against Folkestone. Our commercial team is working hard to bring local sponsorship opportunities and partnerships to Whitstable Town FC.

Quote from commercial manager Andy Luton: “Having the Canterbury Suzuki brand as our match day and also a pitch side advertising sponsor, brings a great opportunity to forge a long-term partnership that works for both parties and helps the exposure of both brands. The commercial team at Whitstable Town are working hard behind the scenes to get like-minded local businesses involved in our community club. We have a great following and atmosphere at the Belmont Ground, which has a dedicated area to display products and branding should you wish to do so."

Quote from Canterbury Suzuki sales manager Stuart Webb: “We would like to say thank you to Whitstable Town FC for the sponsorship opportunity at the game on Saturday. It was good to see a lot of locals supporting the team, which certainly added to the atmosphere at the game. I had the privilege of speaking to several passionate people from the club who talked about the fantastic plans in place now and for the future. We had the opportunity to display some of our vehicles in the ground, which is good exposure for the Suzuki brand. The Canterbury Suzuki Team will be back to Support Whitstable Town FC for future matches during the season”.

CRAY VALLEY (PM) FC - OUR HISTORY 1919-2019

Last season was the club’s 100th season and if Carlsberg did seasons then this one would feature prominently. Promotion earned through winning the SCEFL Premier Division by one point after securing a 2-0 win at Canterbury City on the final day of the season. 38 league games, 91 points, 108 goals scored and a goal difference of +72. A Wembley appearance followed in the FA Vase Final where after successfully negotiating nine rounds they met Chertsey Town of the Combined Counties League. Narrowly beaten 3-1 in extra time but a memorable day for the whole club. Kent FA records show that Cray Valley Paper Mills FC was formed in 1919, and played in the new Sidcup and Kent League Division II. The Millers first match was a 1-0 victory against Hamilton House FC on September 20th 1919 which was followed by their first away match against Sidcup Invicta, beating them 7-0. Cray went on to win the division in their first season and were promoted to Division I. The following season Cray won the Kent County Junior Cup defeating Sittingbourne Paper Mills 3-0 in the final and the next registered success was in 1936/37 when they won the 3rd Division title in the Kent Amateur League West Division. From that time they have appeared in the records in every decade, whilst from the 1950/51 season the records show a continuous existence up to the present day. The Millers played in various leagues such as The Sidcup and District League and were always known as Cray Valley Paper Mills FC, originally playing in green and white, which were the colours of the paper mills vehicles, and company banner. Cray won the Kent County Junior Cup for the 2nd time in 1977/78, and repeated this in 1980/81, the year the mills at St. Pauls Cray, (where they had played their games at the sports ground), closed. The Nash family owned the paper mills and supported the football club until the mills closure. Cray lost their ground, and began a nomadic existence, playing out of various venues until they found a permanent home at Badgers Sports in Middle Park Avenue, Eltham, South East London. It was at this time the ‘Paper Mills’ was abbreviated to (PM)! The first team enjoyed a successful period in the South London Alliance, winning Division 1 in 1983/84, before moving to the Spartan League in 1991, where they were runners up in division 1 South in 1998. Cray then became founder members of the London Intermediate League, in the following season were runners up, and reached the final of the league cup, whilst they were also runners up in the London Intermediate Cup. In 2001/02 Cray were elected to join Division One of the Kent County League, gaining promotion to the Premier division in 2003/04. Cray enjoyed a hugely successful season in 2004/05, when they won the Premier division by 11 points, along with the Kent Intermediate Challenge Shield, and the Inter Regional Challenge Cup. Between 2000-2010 under manager Mark Edwards Cray enjoyed regular successes in the London Intermediate Cup, which has seen them win the competition four times and come runners-up once. In an historic 2011/12 season, Cray effectively gained two promotions, when they moved from the Step 7 Kent County League, to the Step 5 Kent Hürliman League. In their first season finishing 11th and reaching the semi final of the Kent Senior Trophy. Seasons 2012-14 saw improvements on the previous campaigns with an 8th and 7th placed finishes whilst reaching the semi final of the London Senior Cup narrowly losing to eventual winners AFC Wimbledon. The Club also experienced it’s first taste of the FA Cup, beating Lancing away before losing to Redhill. Steve Chapman handed over the reins to Paul Gross in 2014 and although he managed to emulate the achievement of his predecessor by finishing 7th in the newly named Southern Counties East Football League the following season a late season slump resulted in a disappointing 10th place finish. James Collins took over the reins in 2016 and enjoyed considerable success on the field. Finishing in a very creditable 4th place in the league and reaching the final of the Kent Senior Trophy losing 2-1 to League Champions Ashford Town and becoming the lowest ranked team ever to win the London Senior Cup. On a memorable night at Dulwich Hamlet the Millers beat Ryman Premier Division team Metropolitan Police 2-1. Season 2016-17 also saw our youth development continue to flourish and our Reserves won the Suburban League, South Division and narrowly missed out on doing the double when they lost to Met Police Reserves in the League Cup final. During season 2017/18 current manager Kevin Watson was appointed. A very successful second half of the season culminated in a 6th place league finish and a runners up medal in the London Senior Cup where the Millers were beaten in the final by Balham. This was followed by our best ever 100th season described above. For season 2019/20 the club will run various Youth teams and a Ladies side in addition to our First and Development teams plying their trade for the first time in the Isthmian League. It will be a tough task but the aim will be to build further on the success of last season.

Geoffrey’s Memories

The same surname may not always have the same meaning. For example, some Beers may be able to trace their name back to German words for bear and have been given to people with a reputation of having bear-like strength; but other Beers may trace their name to old word for pasture land, and be given to people who had lived near such countryside.

Andy Beer was an Exeter City striker and notable goal-scorer coveted in the mid 1970s by top side Leicester City. Born in Swansea he had also caught the eye of the Welsh Selectors. Unfortunately, he suffered a serious knee injury which scuppered his chances of joining the Foxes and earning an international cap. He heeded medical advice to retire. How many promising careers have been blighted by bad injuries?

Talking of Beer, the village of Offham, near Maidstone and known for its quintain, put out a team around about 1960 which included at centre-forward Billy Boozer and alongside him at inside-left ‘Cheddar’ Cheeseman!

We kicked off our first match of the season in the East Kent Youth League on a very warm and sunny September afternoon against Monkton FC. Both teams started well and Monkton had three early shots on target which were all saved by our keeper Noah. The ball was getting passed around well when it landed at the feet of Finley who crossed it in and somehow the ball skimmed across the line giving us our first goal. There was some top defending by Will, Elian and Nathan making sure that Monkton were unable to progress to the goal. Joel was next to have a shot, taking the ball around two players before smashing the ball into the back of the net. Very quickly after kick off, Joel had the ball again and made a good pass through to Ted who took his shot but the keeper saved it only for it to fall to the feet of Frank who scored giving us our third goal. Monkton had a good run towards goal late in the second half but Noah was not letting anything passed diving across the goal to make another good save.

About a minute into the second half, Finley scored a cracking goal from the left side of box that the Monkton keeper could do nothing about. It wasn’t long before Finley had another shot that was saved well by the keeper but Ted was there for the rebound giving us another goal. Monkton battled hard in the second half but Joseph, Josh and Frank managed to win the tackles not letting Monkton get a shot at goal. Once again Finley was powering towards the goal and took another great shot that that went straight over the keepers head and into the back of the net. Finley then had a last minute shot at goal that was saved very well by the Monkton keeper.

The boys played extremely well today in a new league and we hope this is a sign of exciting things to come.

Points Shared At Deal Reserves get their first point of the season

The reserves had their second league game of the season yesterday, away to Deal Town Rangers, which on paper looked to be a tough away fixture. The reserves fielded a young, but strong side with three first team players in their ranks - Muhammed Cham, Teddy Nelson and Harry Stannard on the bench, returning from injury.

Town started well playing some neat football and created some early chances. The midfield three of player/manager Josh Algar, Kieran Jones and Kyle Wisker were getting a hold of the game in midfield, freeing up Cham and Callum Mason who were both causing the home full backs problems. Town’s first real chance came down the right hand side, as a great ball from defender Jack Sutton put Cham through and he beat his man nicely but put the chance into the side netting. Deal were also playing some nice football and reaped their rewards when they scored from a corner in the 7th minute. Poor defending from Whitstable resulted in a free header at the back post for Jake Laing. This seemed to spark Whitstable into life and they dominated the next ten minutes, creating several chances, but Peter Sharpless and Cham failed to convert. Whitstable were getting real joy on the right hand side from Cham, but conviction in the penalty box was lacking. Whitstable’s persistence eventually paid off when a delivery from the right was cleared away by a Deal defender, but it fell to Josh Algar on the edge of the box and he controlled and volleyed the ball superbly into the corner. The back three of Nelson, Sutton and Caleb Afoke looked solid, with Ryan Birch between the sticks controlling his area and always quick off his line to stop any real danger.

The second half saw a few changes made and Whitstable were struggling to play their passing game, starting slowly with Deal getting in behind although unable to create any real chances. On came Harry Stannard, returning from his injury and within minutes he had a great chance but shot into the keeper’s hand, but he was already creating an impact by bringing other players into the game. Whitstable started to get more of a foot hold in the game although it was still very much end to end but both teams failed to create any clear cut chances. Whitstable had to make three changes due to injuries to their back three. This unbalanced the defence for a short period and goalkeeper Birch pulled off a great one handed save from a Deal player who cut in and hit a great shot, which looked like it was going into the corner of the goal until Birch finger tipped it around the post. Harry Stannard had a fantastic chance to win the game for Whitstable with five minutes to go, after a great run from Owen Fitt who beat two defenders down the right hand side before the goalkeeper spilled his shot and it fell to Harry Stannard who put the ball into the side netting from eight yards out. Just a little bit more composure was needed with only the two defenders on the line to beat.

Whitstable were starting to look fatigued towards the end with a lot of young players on the pitch in hot conditions, but they managed to hold out for a draw. They should be disappointed not to have won the game, as they could have been out of sight in the first half. A much improved performance from the young reserves side who looked very good today in spells but there is definitely more to come from this side.

Whitstable Town FC Man of the Match Award Presented to Marcus Evans

By Robin Whitehead For the Match against Haywards Heath REDS CONCEDE LATE EQUALISER

BY RON MARTIN WHITSTABLE TOWN 1 HAYWARDS HEATH TOWN 1 BetVictor Isthmian League South East Division Saturday 14 September 2019 15.00

Whitstable ultimately had to settle for a draw following a great goal by Haywards Heath substitute Callum Saunders a couple of minutes before the end. The home team, boosted by two new signings, probably just shaded a goalless first half, although the visitors went close of a couple of occasions. A Liam Dickson header though was the only attempt that tested either goalkeeper. Jamie Brotherton was dismissed just before the hour mark for collecting two yellow cards and then Aaron Millbank put Whitstable ahead with a well taken free kick. The three points were almost wrapped up in the closing minutes, but a goal line clearance gave Heath the chance to break and Saunders curled the ball past Dan Eason to earn his team a point.

Haywards Heath were founded a few years after Whitstable back in the 19th century and made their debut in the Isthmian League last season, when they reached the play-offs at their first attempt. They have started quite well again this time around and arrived at a sunny Belmont in eighth place after four games. The two teams drew 0-0 in the corresponding fixture last season, with the Sussex team winning their home game 2-1. Both teams were without a few members of their squads for this game, with Tom Bryant and John Walker not quite fit to start for Whitstable and Harry Stannard played a part in the reserve team’s 1-1 draw at Deal Town Rangers as he continues his recovery from injury. Whitstable gave new singings John Ufuah and Marshall Wratten their first starts.

The first chance fell to Heath in the 5th minute when Hamish Morrison fed Brotherton down the right and his cross was glanced just wide by the head of Trevor McCreadie. Whitstable responded with Wratten heading a deep Jake Mackenzie cross wide at the back post. A good run by Mackenzie then gave Tijan Jadama a sight of goal, but he shot well over from distance. In the 11th minute, Dickson got his head to a long throw by Connor Sanders, but Luke Glover got back well to touch the ball over the bar. A good cross field ball by Dickson then released Ufuah on the right and he appeared to be brought down on the edge of the box, but the referee was unmoved. The game then went through a period where both teams played some neat football with little end product. McCreadie worked particularly hard to put the home defence under pressure, but looked a bit frustrated at times as he looked for some support from his teammates.

On 30 minutes, another long Sanders throw was spilt by Glover, before being hacked away from danger. Wratten just failed to reach a good Millbank cross, then nodded another wide. Brotherton received the ball from the left, controlled it and dragged his shot just past the far post on 39 minutes. The game flowed from end to end for the last few minutes of the half without either team finding the right final ball and the score remained 0-0 at the break.

Whitstable started the second half on the attack, as a Sanders throw was held up by Millbank, who laid it off for Dickson, but his shot was blocked for a corner, from which a header was easily held by Glover. A Brotherton cross dropped for Kieran Rowe, who at the second attempt got his shot away, but over the bar. Morrison made a surging run down the right into the box, but his attempted shot was well closed down. In the 52nd minute, Wratten was chopped down by Brotherton as he tried to bring the ball forward, earning the experienced Heath player a yellow card. The Sussex team were starting to knock the ball around confidently without really causing too many problems for the Whitstable defence. Then, on 59 minutes, a scuffle between Sanders and Brotherton led to both being shown a yellow card, which for the latter meant he was also shown a red, having been cautioned a few minutes earlier. Whitstable soon took advantage of the extra man when they won a free kick just outside the penalty area to the left of centre and Millbank found the bottom right corner, past the despairing dive of Glover to give his team a 62nd minute lead.

A one-two between Millbank and Ufuah almost created a second goal, but the ball was pushed behind for a corner. The visitors then made two changes and Saunders nearly made an immediate impact, lifting an effort over the bar following a free kick. Suddenly Whitstable looked a little nervy, conceding a few free kicks in dangerous areas, one of which was struck into the wall by Saunders. Liam Gillies came on to replace Wratten, then Reece Hallard lost his composure and found himself in the book. On 87 minutes, James Brown made a timely interception and brought the ball forward, before crossing for Jadama whose shot was partially saved by Glover, but the ball continued towards goal where it was just cleared off the line by Henry Watson. It was to be a crucial moment, because Heath broke and Byron Napper passed to Saunders on the left and he cut into the corner of the box before curling a perfect shot past Eason into the top far corner of the net. It was to be a brief, but telling, contribution from the substitute Saunders, who then went off holding his hamstring to be replaced by Tariq Straker in the 90th minute. Whitstable tried to find a winner in the six added minutes. Gillies made room and shot over from 18 yards, a Brown free kick was headed at Glover by Dickson, then a good curling right footer by Ufuah flew just past the far post. A final long throw by Sanders was gathered by Glover to ensure the points were shared at 1- 1.

Whitstable have not had a great record in recent times when playing teams with ten men and once again will be disappointed not to have held on to take maximum points. Haywards Heath showed enough to suggest they will again be a force this season and their equalising goal was a special effort, although it was in fact their only shot on target in the match. Whitstable now move on to another tough game at home to newly promoted Cray Valley, runners up in the FA Vase at Wembley a few month ago.
