GLCE [4H3.0.1] School Price $8.95 O (Teacher's Guide $8.95) S T The Michigan Lumber Era S Though now forgotten by many, Michigan was once THE leading state in amount of wood harvested each year. It was called "Green Gold" and it is said our green gold was T worth more than California’s yellow gold. Our output reached staggering numbers in the 1870s through the 1890s. For nearly 40 years, our state produced over 2 billion board A feet per year.

T The lumber industry, with its many sawmills, made towns like Muskegon, Saginaw and Traverse City. The "Shanty Boys," as the lumberjacks were called, did all the hard work E and lumber barons like Charles Hackley, Perry Hannah and David Ward became H wealthy. Five other lumber barons went on to become Michigan governors. O Enough wood was cut from Michigan forests to build about 10 million six room homes. Michigan wood helped rebuild Chicago after its famous fire and it helped provide homes O in the more western states that lacked forests. D Most of this wood was white pine, though after 1900 Michigan became a leader in hard woods like maple and birch. Many a school gymnasium was floored with Michigan maple.

Many people thought the forests would last forever, but by 1907 our output was falling fast. Today, Hartwick Pines State Forest is one of the few places you can see untouched white pines. Still, lumbering is alive in Michigan and we have a decent output of several hundred million board feet per year.
