Cobley, (Department of English) Departmental Member Dr. Christine St. Peter, (Department of Women‘s Studies) Outside Member Queer Outbursts‘ investigation of the Vancouver publication concentration (node) contributes to the fields of Canadian literature, queer and lesbian literature, Asian Canadian literature, and women‘s literature through three interwoven tasks. The first two tasks develop and combine node theory and node methodology to produce an original approach to materializing micro-histories minoritarian literatures. The third task demonstrates the nodal approach by materializing a node in Canadian queer women‘s writing centred in the relational geography of Vancouver in the mid-1990s. The queer aesthetics of the novels under consideration are inseparable from the queer bodies and the material contexts that produce them; literary works are not discrete, static creations springing spontaneously from the mind of an inspired isolated writer. Node work reflects this understanding as it oscillates between material, social, and literary analyses and archival fieldwork. The literary and political context of the Vancouver publication node is historicized through a close reading of the 1988 conference, Telling It, which convened authors from First Nations, Asian, and Lesbian communities in the first public and explicit linking of the issues of racialization and sexuality. Social analysis of the node relies on both actor-network theory and Pierre iv Bourdieu‘s analysis of cultural production. Literary analysis is focussed on Larissa Lai‘s When Fox Is a Thousand as the primary representative text, and the social analysis is primarily based on the material circumstances of Fox‘s production and distribution. Close reading of Lai‘s novel demonstrates how the political concerns of the enabling communities are taken up literarily. It also demonstrates an inter-nodal connection, through Lai‘s literary strategies that engage the work of Nicole Brossard, which represents another node of Canadian queer women‘s writing circa 1980 and centred in Montréal. Secondary close readings of three other node novels reveal a common ethical interest in community and difference that is expressed through a literary strategy that I have named ―literary thirdspace.‖ Shani Mootoo‘s Cereus Blooms At Night, Persimmon Blackbridge‘s Sunnybrook, and Daphne Marlatt‘s Taken each opens to a site of possible literary thirdspace that explores the qualities necessary to live difference productively within community: hybridity, instability, kindness, witnessing, safety, and radical acceptance. v Table of Contents Supervisory Committee Jack Rabinovitch1 Founded in 1994 by Jack Rabinovitch, the Giller Prize was established to honour Rabinovitch’s late wife, the journalist Doris Giller, who had died from cancer a year earlier.2 Since its inception, the prize has served to recognize excellence in Canadian English-language fiction, including both novels and short stories. Initially the award was endowed to provide an annual cash prize of $25,000.3 In 2005, the Giller Prize partnered with Scotiabank to create the Scotiabank Giller Prize. Professor Zimmerman retired this year from San Diego State University after a notable career in a variety of roles, beginning in 1978. From 2003 until this year, she was associate vice-president and led Faculty Affairs, having previously served as the chair of the university senate. She began as a lecturer in women’s studies in 1978, and became an associate professor of women’s studies from 1980 through ’83. In 1983 she became a professor. She taught courses, chaired theses, contributed to the syllabus, served as the chair of women’s studies from 1986 to 1992, and again from 1995 to 1997. Based on their shared understandings of the centrality of this disruptive new paradigm—with important influences from English Romanticism—these poets create both lyric and prose works that position them as major leaders in feminist thought in the seventies. Collapsing conventional binaries, their works offer examples of how to live, on the deepest level, as life-affirming beings, regardless of gender, race, class, or sexuality, on a damaged, yet still vibrant, planet.     A Legacy of Canadian Cultural Tradition and the Small Press: The Case of Talonbooks KATHLEEN SCHERF INETEEN SIXTY-SEVEN was an auspicious year for the support and profile of Canadian literary culture. The Centennial, N Expo ’67, accessible Canada Council grants to publishers and authors, Local Initiatives Project and Opportunities for Youth grants, the expansion of universities and their student bases, and the tenth anniver- sary of McClelland & Stewart’s launch in 1957 of the New Canadian Library series — all played a role in raising the Canadian literary con- sciousness. Two of the consciousnesses raised belonged to David Robinson and Jim Brown, who in that year launched on the University of British Columbia (UBC) campus a little magazine called Talon. The expansion in literary culture of which Talon was a part included the breathtakingly rapid expansion of little magazines and small presses in English Canada during the 1960s and 1970s. In 1967, for example, Canadian Literature devoted an entire issue (number 33) to “Publishing in Canada.” The issue contains responses to a questionnaire about Cana- dian publishing circulated by editor George Woodcock to various writ- ers and publishers: Earle Birney, Kildare Dobbs, Arnold Edinborough, Robert Fulford, Roderick Haig-Brown, Carl F. Klinck, Hugh MacLennan and Robert Weaver — all big names. Not one of those questions or an- swers deals with the existence of small presses, and of the issue’s six ad- ditional articles about publishing, only one, by Wynne Francis, has as its subject “The Little Press,” and it is primarily a checklist. Only three years later, in 1970, in a Dalhousie Review article on Canadian poetry published in 1969, Douglas Barbour remarks that eight- een of the twenty books under consideration in his review were issued by small presses.
