Simon Donaldson and Andrew Wiles will serve as editors-in-chief, while I will serve as managing editor. Associate editors are Brian Conrad, Ingrid Daubechies, Charles Fefferman, János Kollár, Andrei Okounkov, David Morrison, Cliff Taubes, Peter Ozsváth, and Karen Smith. The Monograph Series publishes Letter from the president selected expositions of recent developments, both in emerging areas and in older subjects transformed by new insights or unifying ideas. The next volume in the series will be Ricci Flow and the Poincaré Conjecture, by John Morgan and Gang Tian. Their book will appear in the summer of 2007. In related publishing news, the Institute has had the complete record of the Göttingen seminars of Felix Klein, 1872–1912, digitized and made available on James Carlson. -

ANNALS OF MATHEMATICS MANIFOLD DESTINY A legendary problem and the battle over who solved it. by Sylvia Nasar and David Gruber AUGUST 28, 2006 n the evening of June 20th, several hundred physicists, including a O Nobel laureate, assembled in an auditorium at the Friendship Hotel in Beijing for a lecture by the Chinese mathematician Shing-Tung Yau. In the late nineteen-seventies, when Yau was in his twenties, he had made a series of breakthroughs that helped launch the string-theory revolution in physics and earned him, in addition to a Fields Medal—the most coveted award in mathematics—a reputation in both disciplines as a thinker of unrivalled technical power. Yau had since become a professor of mathematics at Harvard and the director of mathematics institutes in Beijing and Hong Kong, dividing his time between the United States and China. His lecture at the Friendship Hotel was part of an international conference on string theory, which he had organized with the support of the Chinese government, in part to promote the country’s recent advances in theoretical physics. (More than six thousand students attended the keynote address, which was delivered by Yau’s close friend Stephen Hawking, in the Great Hall of the People.) The subject of Yau’s talk was something that few in his audience knew much about: the Poincaré conjecture, a century-old conundrum about the characteristics of three-dimensional spheres, which, because it has important implications for mathematics and cosmology and because it has eluded all attempts at solution, is regarded by mathematicians as a holy grail. -

The Maryland‐District of Columbia‐Virginia Section of the Mathematical Association of America: The First One Hundred Years Caren Diefenderfer Betty Mayfield Jon Scott November 2016 v. 1.3 The Beginnings Jon Scott, Montgomery College The Maryland‐District of Columbia‐Virginia Section of the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) was established, just one year after the MAA itself, on December 29, 1916 at the Second Annual Meeting of the Association held at Columbia University in New York City. In the minutes of the Council Meeting, we find the following: A section of the Association was established for Maryland and the District of Columbia, with the possible inclusion of Virginia. Professor Abraham Cohen, of Johns Hopkins University, is the secretary. We also find, in “Notes on the Annual Meeting of the Association” published in the February, 1917 Monthly, The Maryland Section has just been organized and was admitted by the council at the New York meeting. Hearty cooperation and much enthusiasm were reported in connection with this section. The phrase “with the possible inclusion of Virginia” is curious, as members from all three jurisdictions were present at the New York meeting: seven from Maryland, one from DC, and three from Virginia. However, the report, “Organization of the Maryland‐Virginia‐District of Columbia Section of the Association” (note the order!) begins As a result of preliminary correspondence, a group of Maryland mathematicians held a meeting in New York at the time of the December meeting of the Association and presented a petition to the Council for authority to organize a section of the Association in Maryland, Virginia, and the District of Columbia. -

This thesis consists of an introduction and two research papers in the fields of symplectic and contact geometry. The focus of the thesis is on Floer theory and symplectic field theory. In Paper I we show that the partially wrapped Floer cohomology of a cotangent fiber stopped by the unit conormal of a submanifold, is equivalent to chains of based loops on the complement of the submanifold in the base. For codimension two knots in the n-sphere we show that there is a relationship between the wrapped Floer cohomology algebra of the fiber and the Alexander invariant of the knot. This allows us to exhibit codimension two knots with infinite cyclic knot group such that the union of the unit conormal of the knot and the boundary of a cotangent fiber is not Legendrian isotopic to the union of the unit conormal of the unknot union the boundary and the same cotangent fiber. In Paper II we study the Chekanov-Eliashberg dg-algebra which is a holomorphic curve invariant associated to a smooth Legendrian submanifold. -

This field has grown into an area in its own right due to rapid progress seen in the last five decades. The community of Indian mathematicians working on this field is small but steadily growing. The contribution from Indian mathematicians to this field is noted in the article. Key words : Contact geometry; symplectic geometry. 1. INTRODUCTION Symplectic geometry has its origin in the Hamiltonian formulation of classical mechanics while con- tact geometry appears on constant energy surfaces in the phase space of classical mechanics. Contact geometry is also the mathematical language of thermodynamics, geometric optics and fluid dynam- ics. Symplectic and contact geometry in the simplest terms can be best described as the geometry of differential forms. In recent times, this has grown into an independent subject in its own right. It has also found applications in important problems of low dimensional topology, complex geometry, algebraic geometry, foliation theory and has given new directions in dynamics. A symplectic form on a manifold M is a non-degenerate 2-form ! which is also closed.
