  • Psycho Killers, Circus Freaks, Ordinary People: a Brief History of the Representation of Transgender Identities on American TV Series
Psycho Killers, Circus Freaks, Ordinary People: A Brief History of the Representation of Transgender Identities on American TV Series Abstract: In 1965, popular TV Series The Alfred Hitchcock Hour (NBC) aired the episode “An Unlocked Window”, in which it is revealed that the nurses killer in the area is a transvestite. It was the first time a transgender character appeared on a TV series, and until the late 80s that was the most stereotypical and basic – because it was minimal – representation of transsexuals on broadcast TV series and films: as psychopaths and serial killers. Other examples are Aldo Lado’s Who Saw Her Die? (1972), Brian de Palma’s Dressed to Killed (1980), Robert Hiltzick’s Sleepaway Camp (1983) and Jonathan Demme’s The Silence of the Lambs (1991). Throughout the 90s the paradigm changed completely and transsexual characters became much more frequent. However, the change was not for good, as they were turned now into objects of mockery and disgust in comedy TV series and films, in which the protagonist heterosexual male was “deceived” into kissing or having sex with an “abhorrent” trans just as a comic device. In the comedies Soapdish (1991), Ace Ventura (1994), and Naked Gun 33 1/3 (1994), the male protagonist ends up literally throwing up when he realizes that the girl he had been kissing was not born a female. Friends (1994-2004) and Ally McBeal (1997-2002) are also series of the late 90s in which the way transgender characters are represented is far from being appropriate. It has not been until the Golden Globe and Emmy awarded TV series Transparent (2014-2016) when transgender issues have been put realistically on the front line with the accuracy and integrity that they deserve.

With the support of the City of Chicago Commission on Human Relations, the Advisory Council on Gay and Lesbian Issues established the Chicago Gay and Lesbian Hall of Fame in June 1991. The inaugural induction ceremony took place during Pride Week at City Hall, hosted by Mayor Richard M. Daley. This was the first event of its kind in the country. The Hall of Fame recognizes the volunteer and professional achievements of people of the LGBT communities, their organizations, and their friends, as well as their contributions to their communities and to the city of Chicago. This is a unique tribute to dedicated individuals and organizations whose services have improved the quality of life for all of Chicago's citizens.

Hip hop dance has taken many forms throughout its four decades ofexistence. This research shows that regardless ofthe form there are three prominent characteristics: performance, personal style, and competition. Although it is possible to isolate the study ofeach ofthese characteristics, they are inseparable when defining hip hop dance. There are several genre-specific performance formats in which hip hop dance is experienced. Personal style includes the individuality and creativity that is celebrated in the hip hop dancer. Competition is the inherent driving force that pushes hip hop dancers to extend the form's physical limitations.

Since the Summer of 2013, I’ve been working on a currently untitled play inspired by the Diane Arnson Svarlien translation of Euripides’ Medea. The origin of the idea was my Theater and Culture class with Nancy Hoffman, taken in the Spring of 2013. For our midterm, we were assigned to pick a play we had read and set it in a new location. It was the morning of my 21st birthday, a Friday, and the day I was heading home for Spring Break. My birthday falls on a Saturday this year, but tomorrow marks the anniversary, I’d say. I had to catch a train around 7:30am. The only midterm I hadn’t completed was the aforementioned Theater and Culture assignment.
