The UK pharmaceutical industry is, historically, a big success story for chemistry. Sarah Houlton talks to Richard Barker, director general of the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry , about competitiveness, government support and what the future holds for the sector

It’s taken more than two decades, but Steve Ley’s group has finally completed the total synthesis of the insect antifeedant azadirachtin, a world first. A long time coming The project, started during Steve’s time at Imperial College and continued in Cambridge when he moved here back in 1992, has taxed more than 40 PhD students and postdocs over the years. Azadirachtin has been a target for total synthesis in many research groups around the world for years. The mole - cule is an attractive target partly because of its biological activity, and partly because it’s so fiendishly complicated. It was first isolated from the neem tree in 1968, and it took another 17 years for the correct structure to be elucidated and synthetic efforts to begin in earnest. The neem tree is native to India, and has many uses – its twigs are used as toothpicks, powdered extracts are used for stomach complaints and an oil as a topical antimalarial, for example. It also has very low mammalian toxicity. ‘Its t t i
