GEORGES-HENRI SOUTOU La diplomatie française et les diplomates français entre tradition et réforme Identité nationale, américanisation, européanisation, mondialisation: cette problémati- que est bien sûr au cœur de la diplomatie française depuis 1945. Celle-ci a été marquée évidemment par des évolutions et des adaptations, mais aussi par certaines continuités, en particulier le souci de maintenir l’identité nationale: la France a toujours été le moins atlantiste des pays d’Europe occidentale et le plus rétif au leadership américain; ses élites se sont en général méfiées de la mondialisation libérale, souhaitant, de Pierre Mendès France à François Mitterrand, promouvoir telle ou telle forme de »libéralisme organisé« limitant le jeu du marché, en particulier pour les matières premières, ainsi que pour les productions culturelles (»exception culturelle« et francophonie). Quant à l’européanisation, elle a constitué certainement un axe de la diplomatie et des diploma- tes français, mais elle est restée partielle et chargée d’arrière-pensées très »nationales«. De façon peut-être excessive, mais pas fausse, les partenaires de la France au sein de la CEE puis de l’Union européenne avaient (ont toujours) l’impression que Paris consi- dère l’Europe avant tout comme un levier permettant de prolonger son action et de diffuser son modèle; de Gaulle lui-même ne parlait-il pas de l’Europe comme d’un »levier d’Archimède« pour la France? Do Books Cause Revolutions? An Empirical Test of Robert Darnton’s The Forbidden Best-Sellers of Pre-Revolutionary France* Yu Sasaki† This version: March 22, 2020 Preliminary; comments welcome Abstract This article is the first empirical test of Robert Darnton (1995)’s thesis that illegal books clandes- tinely circulated contributed to the French Revolution. The provocative argument has spawned a vibrant industry in historical research but quantitative studies have not been offered. I do so by constructing a new data set that digitizes all 720 illegal works in Darnton’s published corpus. Using the number of émigrés and deaths sentences as my proxies for the Revolution, I show that the diffusion of illegal books has a positive and significant impact on nobles and clergy- men who fled from France but not those who received death sentences. My findings are robust to a host of covariates that could determine diffusion and the two revolutionary outcomes. My analysis implies that an information revolution in which technological progress allows for a fast and inexpensive transmission of information could facilitate a political revolution. *I thank Takayuki Kubouchi for his able research assistance. It is the first biennial exhibition and is accompanied by this beautiful, inaugural catalog. The Baylor art faculty are practicing professionals active in their respective fields of specialization. The research activity of the art historians involves worldwide travel and results in published scholarly articles and books. They will be participating in this display of talents by presenting twenty-minute lectures on topics of their choosing on Tuesday, February 25, beginning at 2:00 pm in lecture hall 149. The studio faculty exhibit internationally, nationally, regionally, and locally. They belong to professional societies and organizations. Their works regularly appear in peer-reviewed juried exhibitions, solo exhibitions at museums, galleries, and art centers, as well as in national and international publications. Collectively, this active professional activity adds vitality to the educational mission of the Department and the University. Known for their excellence in the undergraduate classroom and studio, their individual creative and scholarly pursuits are evoked and recorded in this exhibition, catalog, and lecture series.
