The year 2009 has been the most successful year for the club since its formal inception four years ago.

A lot of people have done a lot to make this happen and the club is now a force to reckon with not only on the field of soccer but as a social and community service organisation.

We played our league finals in August, then State of Origin Leg 2 match, Diwali Cup match, a Pool Competition, Inter-District Soccer Tournament in Sydney and then finally finishing the year with a Grand Presentation Night in December along with the completion of the 6 A-Side competition.

Read more on these in this issue.

Hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and wish al l our readers a great New Year.

League Finals ––– by Praneel Singh

Semi Final 1 – Belnorth v United FC (1 – 0)

The first semi final saw the top two teams and the two rivals Belnorth and GUFC take on each other. Our boys played excellently but were not able to finish and a counter attack opportunity to Belnorth gave them the upper hand by scoring the winner.

Semi Final 2 – Gundaroo v Gungahlin (0 – 6)

This was a do or die match. The match was mostly one-sided with GUFC scoring 6 goals and thus winning it convincingly to again play Belnorth in the Grand Final.

Final – Belnorth v Gungahlin (3 – 2)

With Belnorth beating us in the first semi–final the boys were out to get some revenge. The game was competitively fought between the two teams. The boys again displayed excellent football skills and scored two quick goals within 30 minutes of the game but Belnorth managed to pull one back just before the half time break. The second half saw Gungahlin missing many opportunities whereas Belnorth made the most from their opportunities by scoring two goals. Belnorth coming out victorious by 3-2.

On the sidelines, the spectators were also entertained by our ‘terukutu’ group with their beating of the dholak and songs.

Diwali Cup

Similar to 2008, this year’s Diwali Cup match was played between the Masters and the Under 35’s. The match was played in four quarters of 15 minutes on a very hot day. The match was a very intense one as the Masters were playing with experience and the Under 35’s seeking a revenge on their loss of 2008. The match was controlled by a very experienced ‘Fiji’ referee, who preferred the match to flow without blowing too much of the whistle. Though the match was played very competitively between the two teams, the Under 35’s outclassed the Vets by 6-3. Congrats to the Under 35’s.
