His father took him to see "Jurassic Park" in 1993 in Newcastle, England. Accompanied by the astonishing visuals and John Williams' blazing music, alongside with a big carton of caramel-coated popcorn, this event as a powerful emotional experience marked a new interest in Wilkinson's life towards films and film music. In high school, Wilkinson took an interest in jazz to the extent that he pursued further education in jazz piano and composition at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki. After winning an award for a ballad composition and soon after another award for a composition for mixed choir, Wilkinson got an opportunity to compose for several nationally broadcasted television series and commercials and he began actively pursuing a career in composing for film, while continuing to teach and perform. In 2006 Wilkinson received his Master's degree and in 2007 he scored his first theatrical feature film. Wilkinson was accepted to study at the film-scoring program of the USC Thornton School of Music and received several notable grants towards studies in the US. Wilkinson was selected to mentor with multi-Oscar-nominee composer James Newton Howard, and received the opportunity to orchestrate and conduct for an episode of award-winning television series ‘LOST’.

  • Film Flashback… the SIXTH SENSE PREMIERES on 8/2/1999 We Know How Most Movies Will End Before We See Them
Monday, August 2, 2021 | No. 179 Film Flashback… THE SIXTH SENSE PREMIERES ON 8/2/1999 We know how most movies will end before we see them. Boy loses girl, but gets girl back. Killers are captured or shot escaping. Superheroes live to save the universe again. Horror villains survive to return in sequels. A notable exception to audience expectations came with the premiere Aug. 2, 1999 of M. Night Shyamalan's thriller "THE SIXTH SENSE." No one was expecting its now legendary ending, although the filmmakers worried they'd given some visual clues that might reveal too much about those "dead people" Haley Joel Osment famously insisted he could see. As it turned out, the clues went unseen. What was seen were long lines at theatres, where Universal opened "SIXTH" to a then sizable $26.7M. It did $672.8M worldwide, kick-starting Shyamalan's career. Twenty-two years later, he's still one of very few directors whose names are well enough known to bring moviegoers into theatres. When Shyamalan's latest film, "OLD," opened #1 last weekend, it was his sixth out of 11 films to do so. Since "SIXTH," he's become identified with twist endings that leave audiences wondering how they missed seeing them. Over the years, of course, some films worked better globally than others -- like "SIGNS" (2016) with $408.2M, "THE LAST AIRBENDER" (2010) with “I see dead people…” $319.7M, "SPLIT" (2016) with $278.5M & "UNBREAKABLE" (2000) with $248.1M. Click to Play As enviable as Shyamalan's successes have been, there's also a long list of high profile projects he turned down along the way.

  • Racial Terror and the Struggle for Freedom in the HBO Series Lovecraft Country
Elena Apostolaki PhD candidate a.r.t.e.s. Graduate School for the Humanities Cologne University of Cologne Racial Terror and the Struggle for Freedom in the HBO Series Lovecraft Country HBO's Lovecraft Country (2020-) is based on Matt Ruff's 2016 novel and explores the weird and horrifying world of H.P. Lovecraft and the very real Jim Crow-era racism that plagued the U.S. during that time. The series, developed by Misha Green and produced by Jordan Peele, places Black protagonists at the center of a Lovecraftian horror story. The Black characters have to face shoggoths, grand wizards, magic but they also have to deal with and escape very realistic horror, in the form of the racist police violence and white supremacy. They almost always respond to the terror brought upon them by whiteness, whether it is real or supernatural. By bringing the Black characters—who were often the metaphorical villains of Lovecraft's stories— into the center of representation, the series allows for a new layer of meaning to Lovecraft's fear of the other. Lovecraft's horror "was borne from white Americans' malignant, baseless fear of the other—of Black people, of Latinx people, of immigrants, of Jews" (Foussianes, 2020). Lovecraft Country's horror, however, is borne from a fear of the very real violence that results from racism and prejudice. Lovecraft's racist beliefs are well documented, and both Ruff's book and Peel's take on the show seek to invert his xenophobic preoccupations, using monsters inspired by him to highlight the darkness of the Jim Crow South.

  • Film Flashback… Ghostbusters & Gremlins Opened
Monday, June 7, 2021 | No. 171 Film Flashback… Ghostbusters & Gremlins Opened on 6/8/1984 Weekends with two major openings that aren't targeted to the same audience typically boost box office business – as we just saw Memorial Day weekend. There was, however, a time when studios didn't always avoid going head-to-head with the wrong films. The classic example of what not to do occurred June 8, 1984 when Columbia opened Ivan Reitman's action fantasy GHOSTBUSTERS and Warner Bros. launched Joe Dante's action fantasy GREMLINS. Both were going to play best to younger males. Both studios wanted to kick-off that weekend because in those days early June was when most schools had just closed for the summer, so younger males were now able to see movies all week long. GHOSTBUSTERS looked the strongest. Reitman had already directed hit comedies like MEATBALLS (1979 - $43M) & STRIPES (1981 - $85M). His new film had big star power – Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd & Sigourney Weaver. GREMLINS' Joe Dante hadn't directed any big hits yet but had gotten lots of attention with his werewolf film THE HOWLING (1981 - $18M). Stars Zach Galligan, Phoebe Cates & Hoyt Axton weren't as well-known as GHOSTBUSTERS' star trio. GREMLINS did have some significant star power behind the camera in executive producer Steven Spielberg, whose Gremlins opened on 6/8/1984, INDIANA JONES & THE TEMPLE OF DOOM had just opened Memorial Day weekend to Directed by Joe Dante and Executive $42.3M and would do $333M worldwide. Despite industry speculation that one title might Produced by Steven Spielberg move, both studios stayed the course.
