Foreword 75 years have passed since Trianon, the humiliating and unfair event that has been a trauma for us, Hungarians ever since. Even though we had 22 years at our disposal for analyzing and defining political and social consequences, the next disastrous border adjustment once again driven us to the losers’ side. Since then, the excruciating questions have just multiplied. When was the anti-Hungarian nature of the second universal peace agreement decided upon? What were the places and manners of this fatal agreement, which, although unacceptable to us, seemed to be irrevocable? Some questions can probably never be answered. Devious interests have managed to protect certain archives with non- penetrable walls, or even succeeded in annihilating them. Other vital events have never really been recorded. Lobbying procedures are not the invention of our age... State authorities could easily ban prying into some delicate affairs if special cases – like ours – occurred. There seemed to be no possibility for answering the question of the bloodshed in the autumn 1944 in North Transylvania. -

CHAPTER9 Making the Modern World The Renaissance and Reformation, 1400 to 1648 lready in the fifteenth century, some intellectuals had begun to claim that centuries of backwardness had given way to a “modern” age. All people, of Acourse, believe they live in modern times, and they do. For historians, this transition to a “modern” time period, or even “early modern,” reflects the changing elements of society, state, and culture compared with those of the Middle Ages and before. The key to this transition was a new appreciation for classical antiquity, the culture of ancient Greece and Rome. Historians have named that perception the Renaissance, meaning a rebirth of attitudes drawn from Græco-Roman culture. Classical antiquity had, of course, been appreciated to one degree or another since its collapse in the West a thousand years before. Beginning around 1400, however, a renewed interest in ancient history intertwined with economic, political, and reli- gious developments. Reflecting on the past while sailing into the unknown, the Europeans traveled out of the later Middle Ages (ca. 1300–1500) and landed in the early modern period of history (ca. 1400–1815) (see timeline C). THE PURSE OF PRINCES As the Europeans recovered from the onslaught of the Black Death, the resurging economics of the towns propelled them into undreamed-of wealth and success. Amid plague and peasant rebellion, a dynamic idea later called capitalism began to catch on. Capitalism was a new form of economic practice that went beyond the markets of farmers or fairs. The “capital” of capitalism refers to a substantial amount of wealth that is available, and necessary, for investment. -

Long before Pearl Harbor he manifested an imaginative grasp of the need for drastic expansion of our armament production facilities. He significantly promoted that expansion through the vigorous assistance he gave to the British and French purchasing missions here. He daringly prodded the old National Defense Advisory Commission into enlarging our airplane output. It was his Treasury Department which impounded Axis assets in the United States — over the protests of the Department of State. The lend-lease law was conceived and written in his legal division—and he did much to promote its enactment."No nation has ever before entered into so gigantic a finance program as that undertaken by the Treasury Department for the financing of American participation in the present World War. The war bond program gave millions of Americans, as Secretary Morgenthau desired that it should, a sense of direct participation in the national cause. The traditions of Hungarian verse date back to the sixteenth century, to the first great Hungarian lyricist, Bálint Balassi. He voiced not only the exuberance of the Hungarian Renaissance, but his boisterousness and sentimentality, his choice of themes dealing with the warrior’s life, with love and religious fervour, made him a model for subsequent generations of Hungarian poets. From the beginning of the nineteenth century to the present day, Hungarian literature has been a triumphal march of lyric poetry - each generation saw the emergence of great lyricists, who have, however, remained almost completely unknown to people abroad and to international literary opinion. -
