Their making usually reflects a determination on the part of the director or star to see the artist as an alter-ego. Many of them were adaptations of successful literary works, which tempted financial backers by having a ready-made audience based on a pre-established reputation. The sub-genre’s development is explored via the grouping of films with associated themes and the use of case studies. -
NEBRASKA's CENTENARIANS AGE 107 OR ABOVE — 1867 to 2001
NEBRASKA’S CENTENARIANS AGE 107 OR ABOVE — 1867 to 2001 by E. A. Kral May 1, 2014 update of original published in The Crete News, April 24, 2002, a 40-page supplement Public Announcement for All Nebraskans Effective May 1, 2002, the Nebraska Health Care Association initiated two on-going public service projects on its website to highlight Nebraskans who reach age 107 or above. The NHCA website address is www.nehca.org. First, the NHCA has maintained a roster of living Nebraskans who have attained the age of 107 or above that provides name, birth date, and county in which the person resides. Second, the NHCA has made available access to this updated manuscript version of E. A. Kral’s “Nebraska’s Centenarians Age 107 or Above — 1867 to 2001” but without photographs. Moreover, it has also offered a brief on-going ranking of Nebraska’s supercentenarians in state history, and another document titled “Oldest Twins in Nebraska History.” Relatives, healthcare professionals, and others are asked to notify the NHCA when someone with Nebraska connections reaches age 107 for placement of name, birth date, and county of residence on the living roster. Since age verification may be necessary via census records involving the centenarian’s youth or early adult years, relatives may assist by providing names of parents and location of centenarian during 1900 to 1920. Also please notify the NHCA when the persons on the living roster become deceased so that the roster may be current. The NHCA website address is www.nehca.org and referrals for the living 107-year-old roster may be mailed to Nebraska Health Care Association, 1200 Libra Dr., Ste 100, Lincoln, NE 68512-9332. -

Waanders, Zwolle 1995 Zie voor verantwoording: http://www.dbnl.org/tekst/_van012199501_01/colofon.php © 2012 dbnl / Rijksmuseum Vincent Van Gogh 6 Director's Foreword The Van Gogh Museum shortly after its opening in 1973 For those of us who experienced the foundation of the Van Gogh Museum at first hand, it may come as a shock to discover that over 20 years have passed since Her Majesty Queen Juliana officially opened the Museum on 2 June 1973. For a younger generation, it is perhaps surprising to discover that the institution is in fact so young. Indeed, it is remarkable that in such a short period of time the Museum has been able to create its own specific niche in both the Dutch and international art worlds. This first issue of the Van Gogh Museum Journal marks the passage of the Rijksmuseum (National Museum) Vincent van Gogh to its new status as Stichting Van Gogh Museum (Foundation Van Gogh Museum). The publication is designed to both report on the Museum's activities and, more particularly, to be a motor and repository for the scholarship on the work of Van Gogh and aspects of the permanent collection in broader context. Besides articles on individual works or groups of objects from both the Van Gogh Museum's collection and the collection of the Museum Mesdag, the Journal will publish the acquisitions of the previous year. Scholars not only from the Museum but from all over the world are and will be invited to submit their contributions. -

Teen Study Guide and Extension Activities
“Well, then, what can I say: does what goes on inside, show on the outside?” -Vincent to Theo, June 1880 Vincent van Gogh is among the world’s most famous artists, known for his vibrating colors, thick, encrusted paint, exhilarating brushstrokes and very brief career. In a mere ten years he managed to create an astonishing 900 paintings and 1000 drawings! The art he suffered to create tried to answer the introspective question he put forth in a letter from 1880, “does what goes on inside, show on the outside?” Born in The Netherlands on March 30, 1853, he never knew fame for his art while he was alive. Neither did he know prosperity or much peace during his frenetic life. Vincent was known to be emotionally intense, highly intelligent and socially awkward from the time he was a young boy, and though he never married, he had a deep and driving desire to connect with others. Unfortunately, he was unable to maintain most of his relationships due to his argumentative, obsessive nature and bouts of depression. But it was a divided temperament Vincent possessed - disagreeable, melancholy and zealous on one hand; sensitive, observant and gifted on the other. His beloved brother Theo thought that he had “two different beings in him” and that Vincent often made his life “difficult not only for others, but also for himself.” This disconnect was obviously painful to Vincent, as he once compared himself to a hearth - as someone who “has a great fire in his soul and nobody ever comes to warm themselves at it, and passers-by see nothing but a little smoke at the top of the chimney and then go on their way.” It was this friction of selves that created a lonely lifetime of seeking - for home, family, truth, balance and acceptance, which he ultimately never found. -
Vincent Van Gogh and Paul Gauguin Left the City, Seeking to Renew Themselves As Artists in Simpler, Rural Environments
Vincent van Gogh / Paul Gauguin A Rocky Friendship 1 Vincent van Gogh (1853 – 1890) and Paul Gauguin (1848 – 1903) both experimented with the expressive possibilities of color and line to create distinct personal styles of painting. Working in France at the end of the nineteenth century, the two friends inspired each other during a nine-week period in the autumn of 1888. In February of that year, Van Gogh moved to the peace- ful town of Arles in the south of France. He dreamed of creating a “studio of the south” where a group of art- ists could work and live as a community. He invited his friend and fellow painter Gauguin to join him. Van Gogh transformed his yellow house into an artist’s studio in anticipation. Gauguin finally moved to Arles in October of 1888. Although they learned from each other’s techniques and produced many works side by side, Van Gogh’s stubborn nature and Gauguin’s pride and arrogance made their life together difficult. After nine weeks, a passionate argument caused Van Gogh to have a mental breakdown, and Gauguin returned to Paris. Despite the unhappy ending to the “studio of the south,” the two painters remained friends, and they wrote letters to each other until Van Gogh died two years later. Even though they had different personalities, the two “They say — and I am very willing to believe it — that it artists shared some things in common: is difficult to know yourself — but it isn’t easy to paint Both were essentially self-taught artists.
