My School—Korea University the institution where I found a pride, Central Michigan University where I found friendship, and The University of Texas at Austin where I was taught humility. & God and his doubtless amazing power over my life. Acknowledgements I can’t believe this moment has arrived. Though I have yearned deeply for this moment, I am not sure how I feel in-the-moment. If someone were to ask me “How does it feel after a long journey of six years?” I would answer, “It’s indescribable, but it seems to me a short dream.” I am about to finish my first journey (from August 2008 to May 2014). It might be better to say that “I have just fastened the first button on a shirt with many.” What will be the second journey? First, I would like to acknowledge my academic advisor, Dr. B. Christine Green. When I first read her article, I felt motivated to pursue my doctoral degree under her supervision. When I first met her, I was so impressed by her warmth and kindness. She suggested that I sit with her at the banquet of 2007 NASSM. For lack of a better word, I was a stranger to her at that time. I immediately felt she would be the perfect advisor for me in sport management. I learned a great deal from her not just through her words but through her actions. Those lessons were not limited to intellectual areas. She showed me how to become a good professor as well as a good person. She has been, in a word, a model for me. She still is. I am so proud to make up a branch of her academic tree. I also would like to acknowledge my dissertation committee. Dr. Matt Bowers was always kind to me and throughout this process helped me a great deal in keeping things running smoothly. Above all, I really appreciate his efforts in checking my entire dissertation word by word. That was tremendous support for me. Dr. Marlene Dixon taught me the joy of academic discussion in her class. I learned from Dr. Thomas Hunt a sense of humility and how we, as scholars, should understand others. Lastly, I would like to thank Dr. Wonsuck Kim for his showing a sincere commitment to my dissertation. v I would like to give special thanks to my friends: Dong Soo, John, and Clay. Instead of saying “No,” Dong Soo always worked to make whatever happen that I had asked of him. I sincerely appreciate how this really tough individual worked for my dissertation. He’s a man with few words. He showed his loyalty and friendship by tacking actions. It was so lucky for me to meet John in Austin. Having conversations with him was a kind of intellectual entertainment. He suggested other perspectives, so I was able to bring balance my political leanings. I know Clay cared about my dissertation. Our passion for motorsports, I am sure, will help us set up a quality (and unique) motorsports management program in Winston-Salem State University. Christine Green Parents take a powerful role to a child’s sport socializing. Such roles of parents for children’s sport are neither static nor constantly applied, depending on parents’ cultural beliefs and values. An understanding of these dynamics is crucial for sport managers if they are to design and implement sport programs that can attract a culturally diverse group. A cross-cultural study investigated how Korean immigrant parents were different from American and Korean parents in terms of parents’ influences on their children’s sport participation. It was found that a parent’s cultural model was a significant criterion that explained different degrees of practicing role mechanisms—parents as a provider and interpreter. Parents’ acculturation accounted for the outcomes of Korean immigrants in the U.S. The in-depth interviews then explored how Korean immigrant parents supported children’s sport according to their contexts and environments. It was found that they interacted with contextual factors such as family, neighborhood, school, sport organizations, work, policy and system, and cultures. These interactions were affected not only by surrounding contextual factors but also by their traditional customs and values. Being released from education fever, the Korean immigrant parents interacted more actively with the values and customs of American society. Thus, they generally vii implemented an American sport-friendly environment to make their children’s sport happen and continue. This dissertation’s combined studies demonstrate the crucial role of parents in children’s sport and the effect of culture on shaping those roles. Finally, this dissertation helps build up an integrative paradigm of sport development toward expanding the field of sport participants. Culture is invisible but powerfully affects parenting. Sport parenting is a cultural product.     Resilient Resistance: Understanding the Construction of Positive Ethnocultural Identity in Visible Minority Youth by Elizabeth Shen A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Educational Administration and Leadership Department of Educational Policy Studies University of Alberta © Elizabeth Shen, 2018 ii Abstract Visible minority youth face racism daily at micro, mezzo and macro-levels and yet there is a gap in academic research that examines how these students can combat racism, as they experience it at the micro-level, in order to develop pride toward their minority culture and race. As such, this dissertation explores how visible minority youth, who are living within a dominant culture environment where all levels of racism exist to encourage their assimilation, are able to express positive ethnocultural identity. In doing so, this dissertation seeks to answer the question of: How do visible minority youth build positive personal ethnocultural identity? with the corresponding question of: How do visible minority students externally express ethnocultural identity? Using case study methodology within two schools in the province of Alberta, visible minority adolescent students were interviewed and data were analyzed to gain insight into the various strategies that junior high school (grades 7, 8 and 9) students use to express their ethnocultural identity. Clybourn St; E-E-Lincoln Memorial Dr;W -Milwaukee River DOWNTOWN NEIGHBORHOOD DESCRIPTION East Town (also known as Juneau Town) is a densely populated neighborhood with a variety of housing styles. There are many 19th century houses in the Tudor, Queen Anne and Italianate styles integrated with multi-unit apartment buildings and newer condos. The neighborhood has some wide boulevards with green space in the medians. The streets generally follow a grid pattern; the exceptions to this are Water Street and Prospect Avenue. Water Street tracks the bend of the river and Prospect Avenue follows the curve of the bluff over Lake Michigan along Juneau Park. The topography is flat except for a hill that slopes down to the river beginning around Jefferson Street. Most of Juneau Park is in East Town. There are two monuments in Juneau Park--one is a statue of Solomon Juneau and the other of Leif Erikson. Cathedral Square is a small park in the center of the neighborhood and hosts numerous events throughout the year (see outings section and neighborhood photos below). HISTORY East Town owes its origins to Solomon Juneau. In the 1830s Juneau platted the village of Milwaukee and settled there. He began selling plots of land in what was becoming known as Juneau Town. He set the location for downtown when he and his wife Josette opened a trading post at today’s Water Street and Wisconsin Avenue. Juneau went on to become the first mayor of Milwaukee in 1846 and the city’s first postmaster.

We were the products of war-weary parents who themselves had been children of the Depression era. But the end of the war signaled a period of economic growth and development that put the United States on track to be the world’s richest and most powerful nation. We grew up in a time of plenty and our parents continued to expand our families for almost two more decades. Thus we became the “baby boomers” – a term first seen in an article in the Washington Post in 1970 – and therefore we were named and classified. We had power from the get-go, in terms of sheer numbers, wealth, and educational achievement. Pigs on the street, chickens in front of people’s houses, women smoking tobacco, ..wearing hats and veils driving vehicles,…Negroes shouting lustily to announce their sales of ice cream, matches, brandy!… houses and streets illuminated by gas, heating by hot air pipes, very frequent fire alarms..filled with gratitude and yet amused we reflected upon all these things…1 So wrote Mother Caroline Friess in 1850, describing her arrival in New York City, three years earlier, on July 31, 1847. From that day, with its astonishing sights and sounds, until her death almost exactly forty-five years later on July 22, 1892, Mother Caroline carved out a personal history directed by religious conviction and spiritual values. However, in addition, her life, seemingly set apart from mainstream America by virtue of its convent dimension, paralleled that of thousands of other nineteenth century immigrants. Indeed, the immigrant experience, spawned by the great waves of European migration into the United States during this era, proves to be one bellwether by which we assess the last half of nineteenth century American history. In a thirty-five year period, nearly fourteen million immigrants stepped onto American soil for the first time. As for Mother Caroline and her little traveling band, guided by Mother Mary Theresa of Jesus – they joined the masses of Germans who turned their hearts and minds toward the social, economic, and political opportunity promised by a new life in America.

Knapp Educational Leadership and Policy Studies This qualitative case study delves into the work that community-based organizations do with recent immigrant families and schools in low-income communities by examining the cultural brokering process of one particular CBO. Understanding how an organization approaches working with families and their schools; how organization staff attempt to build understanding, trust, communication, and ultimately relationships between families and schools they work with; and how they attempt to develop the community’s capacity for mutually beneficial engagement—in particular, its sociocultural capital—as well as the schools’ cultural competence, sheds light on the brokering process and demonstrates the critical role that community-based organizations can play in bridging existing gaps between schools and recent
