    COBBLING TOGETHER THE DREAM INDIAN ELEVEN Whenever the five selectors, often dubbed as the five wise men with the onerous responsibility of cobbling together the best players comprising India’s test cricket team, sit together to pick the team they feel the heat of the country’s collective gaze resting on them. Choosing India’s cricket team is one of the most difficult tasks as the final squad is subjected to intense scrutiny by anybody and everybody. Generally the point veers round to questions such as why batsman A was not picked or bowler B was dropped from the team. That also makes it a very pleasurable hobby for followers of the game who have their own views as to who should make the final 15 or 16 when the team is preparing to leave our shores on an away visit or gearing up to face an opposition on a tour of our country. Arm chair critics apart, sports writers find it an enjoyable professional duty when they sit down to select their own team as newspapers speculate on the composition of the squad pointing out why somebody should be in the team at the expense of another. The reports generally appear on the sports pages on the morning of the team selection. This has been a hobby with this writer for over four decades now and once the team is announced, you are either vindicated or amused. And when the player, who was not in your frame goes on to play a stellar role for the country, you inwardly congratulate the selectors for their foresight and knowledge.

    Chapter X EDUCATION AND SPORTS Ancient educational institutions in the form of agraharas, Shivapuris, brahmapuris, ghatikasthanas and mathas existed in the State following traditional methods of teaching. Mathas were residential schools where the teacher and the taught lived together. Agraharas and brahmapuris were settlements of scholars and separate arrangements existed there to teach the three R’s. Ghatikasthanas were meant for conferring degrees or certifying scholarships. Rich families engaged teachers to teach their children privately. There also grew institutions like Koolimatha, Salimatha or Odisuvamatha where a teacher ran a school either in his house or in a public place like a temple or a choultry and was paid in cash or kind during the harvesting season. Reading, writing and arithmetic were taught and much of the learning was through memorising or repeating the sentences or verses collectively. The cane played a major role in disciplining mischievous pupils including those who were slow of learning. Vocational learning was mostly hereditary. A boy who was to pursue the career of an accountant or a government servant was sent to a shop or government office after he mastered the three R’s. He was to be a probationer for long years. Government servants initiated their own young wards into their offices and were later absorbed into service. Administrative service was also hereditary before the advent of the British and for long even after. The offices of a Shanbhag (village accountant) is a case to remind the old practice. The

Recently I inaugurated the picturesque twin grounds at Mulapadu in Krishna District. I also inaugurated the first- ever historical Test match at Visakhapatnam. After taking a look at the grounds and other infrastructure in different districts of A.P, I am thrilled by the dedicated efforts put in by Dr. Gangaraju and his team. I requested Dr. Gangaraju to give a proposal for developing adventure sports on the hillocks of Mulapadu and other sports infrastructure across the State. I have been watching Dr. Gangaraju in BCCI meetings. He comes to the meetings with one agenda - to seek facilities to ACA, demand postings for ACA members in sub committees of BCCI and more number of international matches for the association.     ICC CLASSIFICATION OF OFFICIAL CRICKET WITH EFFECT FROM JULY 2020 ICC CLASSIFICATION OF OFFICIAL CRICKET WITH EFFECT FROM JULY 2020 The following matches shall be classified as Official Cricket: 1 MEN’S CRICKET 1.1 TEST MATCHES Test matches are those which: a) Are played in accordance with the ICC Standard Test Match Playing Conditions and other ICC regulations pertaining to Test matches; and b) Are between: i) Teams selected by Full Members of the ICC as representative of the Member Countries (Full Member Teams). ii) A Full Member Team and a composite team selected by the ICC as representative of the best players from the rest of the world Note: Matches involving an ‘A’ team or age-group team shall not be classified as Test matches. 1.2 ONE DAY INTERNATIONALS (ODI) ODI matches are those which: a) Are played in accordance with the ICC Standard One Day International Playing Conditions and other ICC regulations pertaining to ODI Matches; and b) Are between: i) Any teams participating in and as part of the ICC Cricket World Cup or the Asia Cup; or ii) Full Member Teams; or iii) A Full Member Team and any of the ‘top 8’ Associate teams (Namibia, Nepal, Oman, PNG, Scotland, The Netherlands, UAE, USA) or iv) Any of the ‘top 8’ Associate teams; or v) A Full Member Team (or ‘top 8’ Associate and a composite team selected by the ICC as representative of the best players from the rest of the world).
