THE TIGER BEETLES OF ALBERTA (COLEOPTERA: CARABIDAE, CICINDELINI)' Gerald J. Hilchie Department of Entomology University of Alberta Edmonton, Alberta T6G 2E3. Quaestiones Entomologicae 21:319-347 1985 ABSTRACT In Alberta there are 19 species of tiger beetles {Cicindela). These are found in a wide variety of habitats from sand dunes and riverbanks to construction sites. Each species has a unique distribution resulting from complex interactions of adult site selection, life history, competition, predation and historical factors. Post-pleistocene dispersal of tiger beetles into Alberta came predominantly from the south with a few species entering Alberta from the north and west. INTRODUCTION Wallis (1961) recognized 26 species of Cicindela in Canada, of which 19 occur in Alberta. Most species of tiger beetle in North America are polytypic but, in Alberta most are represented by a single subspecies. Two species are represented each by two subspecies and two others hybridize and might better be described as a single species with distinct subspecies. When a single subspecies is present in the province morphs normally attributed to other subspecies may also be present, in which case the most common morph (over 80% of a population) is used for subspecies designation. Tiger beetles have always been popular with collectors. Bright colours and quick flight make these beetles a sporting and delightful challenge to collect. -

Population size was determined using the mark-and-recatch method. Ten marked specimens were observed over periods of 0.5 to 1.5 hours and travel distances measured. Site population size was calculated to be 17 specimens in 2008, 12 – 13 in 2009, and 26 in 2010. Daily activity observations indicated maximum diurnal activity at 11:30 hrs CEST (12:30 hrs CET). Mean travel distance per hour was 125 m, mean range covered per day was 54 m. It can be derived from these data that a population of 100 specimens requires a one-kilometer stretch of beach and dune environment that is closed to public access. 1 Introduction shape of the white spots of the elytra (Fig. 1). Osnabrück, Dez. 1991 Die ripikole Carabidenfauna der Ems zwischen Lingen und dem Dollart mit 4 Abbildungen und 3 Tabellen Thorsten Aßmann* Abstract: From 1984 to 1990 carabid beetles had been studied at 14 sampie sites of the river Ems (Lower Saxony, F. R. G.) by means of hand-collecting. 127 species were found under willow bushes, on the river banks, on the soil of marshes and in the region of the estuary. So me species are obviously stenotopic, e. g. Elaphrus aureus, living only under the willow bushes growing along the edge of the upper and middle river courses, or Bembidion maritimum, a species of the tidal- zones in estuaries. Kurzfassung : Von 1984 bis 1990 wurde die Carabidenfauna von 14 FangsteIlen an der mittleren und unteren Ems (Niedersachsen) mit Handfängen untersucht. Insgesamt konnten unter Wei- .dengebüschen, an offenen Ufern, an Sumpfstellen und im Ästuarbereich 127 Arten nachgewie- sen werden. Einige der festgestellten Arten sind offenbar stenotop, z. B. Elaphrus aureus, der Weidengebüsche der oberen und mittleren Ems bewohnt, und Bembidion maritimum, der im Tidenbereich der Flußmündung lebt. 1 Einleitung Obwohl die Laufkäferfauna mitteleuropäischer Auen von mehreren Autoren unter- sucht worden ist - so bearbeiteten LEHMANN(1965), LEHMACHER(1978) und SIEPE (1989) verschiedene Biotope am Rhein, verglich PLACHTER(1986) die Fauna der Schotterbänke bayrischer Flüsse mit sogenannten "Sekundärgebieten" (Sand- und Kiesgruben), untersuchte REHFELDT (1984) ostniedersächsische Flußauen und beschrieben GERKEN& BARNA(1987) die ripikole Carabidenfauna aus der Umgebung von Holzminden und Höxter -, 'Iiegen aus Nordwestdeutschland nur wenige Arbeiten zur Zusammensetzung der Laufkäferfauna in Au- und Ästuargebieten vor. -
New Taxonomic Status of the Endangered Tiger Beetle Cicindela Limbata Albissima (Coleoptera: Cicindelidae): Evidence from Mtdna
ECOLOGY AND POPULATION BIOLOGY New Taxonomic Status of the Endangered Tiger Beetle Cicindela limbata albissima (Coleoptera: Cicindelidae): Evidence from mtDNA 1, 2 3 1, 2 M. MORGAN, C. B. KNISLEY, AND A. P. VOGLER Ann. Entomol. Soc. Am. 93(5): 1108Ð1115 (2000) ABSTRACT The tiger beetle Cicindela limbata albissima Rumpp is conÞned to the Coral Pink Sand Dunes formation in southern Utah where its habitat is under threat. To assess the conservation value of this population, the level of divergence in mtDNA throughout the range of C. limbata in the central and western parts of the United States and Canada was tested. A representative sample of 25 specimens from four subspecies was sequenced for 1,873 bp and three mtDNA regions. The data revealed the wide separation of C. l. albissima from the other subspecies. In a phylogenetic analysis that included all species in the maritima species group, C. l. albissima was placed as sister to seven species of a western North American clade. The remaining C. limbata populations formed a (weakly supported) monophyletic group within this western clade but were not closely related to C. l. albissima. These populations could not be further subdivided into discrete geographic entities deÞned by diagnostic characters. It was concluded that the distinct taxonomic status of C. l. albissima had not previously been recognized, possibly because of morphological similarity in elytral patterns and other characters that are convergent in sand dune-dwelling species. On the basis of the mtDNA data, C. l. albissima is eleveated to species status, C. albissima Rumpp [revised status]. The results highlight the importance of conservation efforts for C. -

This article provides quantitative and ecological characteristics of Caraboidea in five metroplises of Ukraine (Dnipro, Do- netsk, Kharkiv, Kyiv, and Lviv). In total, in these cities, 237 species of Caraboidea were recorded, belonging to 63 genera and two I. I. Schmalhausen Institute families – Carabidae (231 species, 61 genera) and Cicindelidae (6 species, 2 genera). By abundance of Carabidae in megapolises, of Zoology of National 33 species were identified to abundant. Eudominants were represented by three species: Harpalus rufipes, Pterostichus melanarius Academy of Sciences and P. оblongopunctatus, dominants – five: Amara aenea, Anchomenus dorsalis, Calathus fuscipes, Harpalus distinguendus and of Ukraine, B. Khmelnytskoho st., 15, Poecilus versicolor. Subdominants were 25 species: Amara similata, Asaphidion flavipes, Badister bullatus, Bembidion lampros, Kyiv, 01030, Ukraine. -

Pitfall-traps (15) were placed along a transect and were operating continuously. The traps caught 10,332 individuals, belonging to 127 species. Both the number of species and cumulative number of species increased continuously with no sign of saturation over the 10-year period. The dominant species showed large changes in numbers from year to year. We suggest that fluctuations in abundance, and the year to year changes in the dominant species are caused mainly by the unstable wetland habitat, and only partially by species biology. Key words: Carabids, wetland, Hungary Introduction The study area was formerly the western bay of the Lake Balaton, Hungary. The area was drained in the early 1900s, which led to the eutrophication of the lake and a deterioration of DIAS Proceedings, No. XX (2005),255-263. 255 the water quality. Sandjegerne har lange bein, store øyne, store kjever og er utpregete rovdyr som lever av andre insekter. De har karakteristiske fargemønster på dekkvingene som gjør dem enkle å skille fra andre biller. Elvesandjegeren er i Norge nesten utelukkende knyttet til sand og siltflater langs elvebredder. Larvene graver fangsttunneler i sanda, mens de voksne er aktive jegere på åpne Elvesandjegerens utbredelse i Norge. Svarte sandflater i solskinn. sirkler angir sikre nåværende forekomster, grå sirkler angir forekomster med usikker status og Status hvite sirkler angir utgåtte forekomster. Kategori sterkt truet (EN) på Norsk rødliste for arter 2010. Kjennetegn fin og tørr sand og den kan takle temperaturer i Elvesandjegeren (Cicindela maritima) er 12-15 mm lang, brunaktig i fargen, sanda på opp mot 50 °C. Ved elvene opptrer sjelden med et svakt bronseskjær, dekkvingene har hver tre separate kremgule arten på større sandbanker som bygges opp bånd som danner et karakteristisk mønster. Undersiden og beina er grønnaktig til ovenfor eller på nivå med elvens normale blålig metallfarget. Sandjegernes larver er meget karakteristiske med det høyvannsstand. De voksne sandjegerne er flattrykte, kompakte hodet og bryststykket. Elvesandjegeren er vanskelig å skille aktive jegere og kommer fram etter overvintring fra den nærstående brune sandjegeren (C. hybrida), men dagens utbredelse av de første varme vårdagene i slutten av april. de to artene i Norge er trolig ikke overlappende. Det sikreste kjennetegnet er at Viktige byttedyr er maur, bier, biller, teger og elvesandjegeren har en gruppe med flere hvite, oppstående hår på panna over sommerfugler.
