The entire complex is spread over a sprawling 7-acre area amidst lush green ambience with the fascinating backdrop of the famed Golconda Fort. This heritage monument was built by the Seventh Sultan of Golconda. Taramati Baradari is a historical Sarai as part of Ibrahim Bagh, a Persian style garden built during the reign of Ibrahim Quli Qutub Shah, the second Sultan of Golconda. The Baradari was constructed on the banks of the Musi River. Today, the region comes under the city limits of Hyderabad, India. The tourism department attributes the name to the Seventh Sultan of Golconda, Abdullah Qutb Shah who as an ode to his favorite courtesan, Taramati, is said to have named sarai, Taramati Baradari. The tourism department promotes the location by romantic stories linking the then Sultan with a courtesan named Taramati. One such story goes that during the reign of Abdullah Qutb Shah, he used to hear Taramati’s voice as she sung for travelers at the sarai, while he sat two kilometers away at Golconda Fort. Her melodious voice was carried by the breeze reaching the prince’s ear at the Fort. Another fable tells of two ravishing dancing sisters, Taramati and Premamati, who danced on ropes tied between their pavilion and the balcony of the king and the patron, Abdullah Qutb Shah. Currently, with two fully equipped theatres, Taramati Baradari Culture Village is the perfect venue for music concerts, performing arts, social events, etc. The Baradari is illuminated in dynamic lighting and it forms the backdrop for all the activities. Taramati Baradari pavilion has 12 doorways and was constructed to allow cross ventilation, which was one of the most indigenous techniques to have been used at that time. www.hitex.co.in 3 The 29th and youngest state of India, Telangana was formally recognized on June 2, 2014 as a treasure trove of tourist destinations. Though Telangana is the nation’s newest state, it has definitely caught the eye of foreign investors as it is the preferred fast emerging state for new investments for MNCs. Shri K.T.Rama Rao said, ‘We have Facebook’s India operations headquartered in Hyderabad. Besides Microsoft, we already have Amazon, Google and Uber setting up their operations in Hyderabad which is the largest set up outside of USA.’ With Google, Uber and Amazon committing to invest about USD 250 million, priority sectors remain IT, electronic hardware manufacturing, aerospace and defense. The other potential companies which could be heading to the state include Ikea, Micromax, Celkon, Karbonn and Foxconn. Indeed, Telangana is quickly emerging to become the most promising investment- friendly state of our nation. www.hitex.co.in 7 Telangana Tourism: PROMISING PROSPECTS The heritage sites that the state of Telangana offers are many. For instance, Kakatiya Fort, Rammappa Temple, and the innumerable temples at Warangal for the spiritually inclined: Lord Sri Ram Temple at Bhadrachalam, Jogulamba Temple, Kolunpaka Jain Temple, Mecca Masjid and the Medak Church. At the same time Telangana Tourism is also promoting the eco-tourism destinations in the Wild Life Sanctuaries at Srisailam-Nagarjuna Sagar, Amarabad Wild Life Sanctuary, Kawal and Kinnersani for the nature lovers. With the passage of time, Telangana is emerging as an investment destination due to its proactive investor friendly policies. Hyderabad is already a well established destination with a fairly good brand recall. The market out there has recognized Telangana State Tourism Development Corporation as a professional entity that provides a wide array of affordable services. Apart from these, Telangana Tourism is all set to promote the new tourism products like Tribal Circuit in Warangal and Yadgirigutta as a spiritual tourism destination. TSTDC possesses the high end fleet of transport comprising of 67 Volvo and Mercedes Benz buses and offers different tour packages for various destinations pinned both inside and outside of the state. There is one air-conditioned customer- oriented Caravan vehicle as well. The Corporation undertakes customized tours and offers lucrative packages which are already popular. TSTDC is concentrating to promote unexplored destinations viz. Tiger Reserves at Kawal, Jannaram, Tadavai and Mannanur in Adilabad which are developed for adventure and eco-tourism. 10 Point of View bi-monthly | October 2015 Issue | VOL. 15 Telangana Tourism has taken up the responsibility to focus and promote tourism products and destinations of Hyderabad and also of the entire Telangana State on a sustainable basis. hyderabad | Sriganesh Rajendran A READING FROM SHAIKPET SARAI QUTB SHAHI, HYDERABAD Serai: The usual meaning in India is that of a building for the accommodation of travellers with their pack-animals; consisting of an enclosed yard with chambers around it. (Hobson-Jobson, 1903) A large building for the accommodation of travellers, common in Eastern countries. The word is Persian and means in that language, ‘a place, the king’s court, a large edifice’; hence karavan-serai, by corruption caravanserie, i.e. place of rest of caravans. The erection of these buildings is considered highly meritorious by Hindus as well as Mohammedans, who frequently endow them with rents for their support. • User Experience Analysis of Qutb Shahi Tombs
User Experience Analysis of the Qutb Shahi Tombs Hyderabad, India Allison James, SmarchS AKPIA 2015 This research was made possible by funding from the Aga Khan Program in Islamic Architecture Travel Grant, a grant from MIT India and the Harold Horowitz Research Fund. Additionally, I would like to thank the Aga Khan Trust for Culture, India for their generous support in the form of housing, transportation and staff support and guidance from the AKTC conservation team. In June of 2014, and January of 2015, I traveled to Hyderabad, India to conduct field research with the Aga Khan Trust for Culture. The AKTC is in their second year of a ten- year project, to conserve the tombs and gardens of the Qutb Shahi Sultans on a necropolis, which contains the tombs of all eight Qutb Shahi sultans (1518-1647.) The initial goal of the project was to use experiential analysis of the current use of the site to reveal different types of adaptations in conservation plans. By using methods of participatory photography, videography and interviews, I collected documentation related to user experience of the site. User experience analysis using the Video Abstraction Tool. Photo taken from the tomb of Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah (1580-1611), Allison James 2014. Mid-way through the summer, the AKTC asked if I would be interested in investigating the original design of each garden surrounding the tombs of four kings on the upper terrace of the complex. After some searching, I gained a richer appreciation for what these other layers would mean to the conservation of the cultural landscape.

It is the major urban centre for all of south-central interior India. From 1956 to 2014, Hyderabad was the capital of Andhra Pradesh state, but with the creaon of Telangana from Andhra Pradesh in 2014, it was redesignated as the capital of both states. The city was founded by the Qutb Shahi sultans of Golconda, under whom the kingdom of Golconda aained a posiHon of importance (second only to that of the Mughal Empire to the north). The old fortress town of Golconda had proved inadequate as the kingdom’s capital, and so in about 1591, Muhammad Qulī Qutb Shah - the fiVh of the Qutb Shahs, built a new city called Hyderabad on the east bank of the Musi River, a short distance from old Golconda. The Charminar, a grand architectural composiHon in Indo-Saracenic style with open arches and four minarets, is regarded as the supreme achievement of the Qutb Shahi period. It formed the centerpiece around which the city was planned. The Mecca Mosque, which was built later, can accommodate over 10,000 people. www.lodestarpropertymanagement.com Hyderabad Map Hyderabad city maps are not only useful for the tourists; but they are also useful for students and for every person who wants to get some informaon about the city.
