Box 9517, 2300 RA Leiden, Netherlands; 3Leiden University, Leiden, Netherlands �[email protected]; https://orcid.org/0000-0001-9804-0120 Abstract Botany is one of the oldest sciences done south of parallel 60 °S, although few professional botanists have dedicated themselves to investigating the Antarctic bryoflora. After the publications of liverwort and moss floras in 2000 and 2008, respectively, new species were described. Currently, the Antarctic bryoflora comprises 28 liverwort and 116 moss species. Furthermore, Antarctic bryology has entered a new phase characterized by the use of molecular tools, in particular DNA sequencing. Although the molecular studies of Antarctic bryophytes have focused exclusively on mosses, molecular data (fingerprinting data and/or DNA sequences) have already been published for 36 % of the Antarctic moss species. In this paper we review the current state of Antarctic bryological research, focusing on molecular studies and conservation, and discuss future questions of Antarctic bryology in the light of global challenges. Email: [email protected] ABSTRACT An additional 25 new combinations in Bryaceae are made for the Bryophyte Flora of North America project in the genera Gemmabryum, Imbribryum, Rosulabryum, and Ptychostomum. KEY WORDS: mosses, North America, Bryaceae, Gemmabryum, Imbribryum, Ptychostomum, Rosulabryum. This paper represents the second installment of taxonomic and nomenclatural changes in the family Bryaceae for the Bryophyte Flora of North America. The first paper (Spence 2005) concentrated on the description of the new genera Leptostomopsis (C. Müll. Hal.) Spence & Ramsay and Plagiobryoides Spence as well as transfers to the re- instated genera Haplodontium Hampe and Ptychostomum Hornschuch. Below many additional species are transferred to the newly described genera Gemmabryum Spence & Ramsay and Imbribryum Pedersen and more transfers are made to Ptychostomum and Rosulabryum Spence. Gemmabryum J.R. Spence & H.P. Ramsay Gemmabryum was described by Spence and Ramsay (2005) for the Flora of Australia, with 25 species transferred. Although many of these also occur in North America, numerous additional species restricted to North America or the Northern Hemisphere exist as well that fit within the concept of Gemmabryum. Siles. Sci. Natur., 68: 11-24, 2019. Abstract: A new bryophyte checklist for Afghanistan is presented, including all published records since the beginning of collection activities in 1839 ‒1840 by W. Griffith till present. Considering several unidentified collections in various herbaria, 23 new records for Afghanistan together with the collection data can be added to the flora. Beside a new genus, Asterella , the new records include Amblystegium serpens var. serpens, Brachythecium erythrorrhizon, Bryum dichotomum, B. elwendicum, B. pallens, B. weigelii, Dichodontium palustre, Didymodon luridus, D. tectorum, Distichium inclinatum, Entosthodon muhlenbergii, Hygroamblystegium fluviatile subsp. fluviatile, Oncophorus virens, Orthotrichum rupestre var. sturmii, Pogonatum urnigerum, Pseudocrossidium revolutum, Pterygoneurum ovatum, Schistidium rivulare, Syntrichia handelii, Tortella inflexa, T. tortuosa, and Tortula muralis subsp. obtusifolia . Therewith the number of species increase to 24 liverworts, 246 mosses and one hornwort. In addition, a historical overview of the country's exploration and a full biogeography of Afghan bryophytes is given. Key words: Bryophytes, checklist, flora, phytodiversity. Introduction Recording, documentation, identification and classification of organisms is a primary tool and essential step in plant sciences and ecology to obtain detailed knowledge on the flora of a country. In many countries, such as Afghanistan, however, our knowledge on plant diversity, function, interactions of species and number of species in ecosystems is very limited and far from being complete. -

Box 1507 Page, Arizona 86040-1507 [email protected] ABSTRACT Ptychostomum subneodamense (Kindb.) J.R. Spence is provided as a new name for a combination in the moss genus Ptychostomum Hornsch. for Bryum ovatum Jur. in lieu of the blocking name Ptychostomum ovatum J.R. Spence. KEY WORDS : Ptychostomum, Bryaceae The species Bryum ovatum Jur. (1882) is an illegitimate name, being a later homonym of Bryum ovatum (Hedw.) Dicks. ex With. (1801). Spence (2007) intended to transfer Bryum ovatum Jur. to the the genus Ptychostomum, but an inadvertent error listed the basionym as Gymnostomum ovatum Hedw., the same as that of Bryum ovatum (Hedw.) Dicks. ex With., a different species. Given that Ptychostomum ovatum (Hedw.) J.R. Spence is a homotypic synonym of Pterygoneurum ovatum (Hedw.) Dixon and blocks a transfer of Bryum ovatum Jur., the next available name for the taxon is Bryum subneodamense Kindb., a heterotypic synonym of Bryum ovatum Jur. The appropriate and correct combination in Ptychostomum for the species under consideration is made here, showing the nomenclatural history in outline form. PTYCHOSTOMUM SUBNEODAMENSE (Kindb.) J.R.
