It really captures the zeitgeist of 2006 in a humorous yet shocking way. I thought it all ended a bit fantastical, I was expecting more of a coming-together of elements of the plot, however I did really enjoy it. In The Devil I Know, award-winning writer Claire Kilroy delivers a delicious novel, a cautionary tale of financial excess set during the Irish property bubble.Tristram St. Lawrence has not been home for years—ever since he missed his mother’s deathbed in favor of going on a bender, the thirteenth Earl of Howth is not welcome in the family castle.     IASIL 2012 – BOOK OF ABSTRACTS 1A THE FRACTURED FAMILY, FATHERHOOD, AND MASCULINITY IN IRISH LITERATURE AND CULTURE CHAIR: JANE MCGAUGHEY SHEILA MCAVEY (Becker College) Fractured Irish Masculinity Britain’s Matrimonial Causes Act of 1857, which allowed for divorce actions to proceed in civil rather than canon courts, broke open the cultural monument of the staid Victorian marriage. Yet, the public recognition of unhappy marriages did not remove the element of scandal that attached to the standing of those who sought or were a party to divorce, or to an Irish husband whose masculinity might be put to question in publicity about a divorce. This paper looks at Lever’s depiction of various forms of uneasy masculinity in Davenport Dunn, Sir Brook Fossbrooke, and The Bramleighs of Bishop’s Folly, novels written in the decade following the Matrimonial Causes Act. In these works, this threat to the once-solid male bastion of marriage seemed to heighten anxiety about masculinity, and Lever’s portraits of corrupt Anglo- Irish marital unions, alongside the absurd posturings of aging males in Sir Brooke Fossbrooke and The Bramleighs of Bishop's Folly offer a sharply realistic assessment of the fractured surface of urban Irish life at a particularly unsettling moment. Sheila McAvey has taught literature and related courses in the Humanities Department at Becker since fall 1992. Prior to Becker, she was an editor at the American Antiquarian Society, in Worcester, MA. Her research interests include issues of female desire, divorce, and Irish masculinity in the works of the Anglo-Irish novelist Charles Lever. She has also been active in her college’s strategic plans for incorporating sensitivity to global issues and social responsibility at Becker College, and has recently attended conferences at the Aspen Institute and the American Association of Colleges and Universities.

Participants: María Jesús Lorenzo Modia (Universidad de A Coruña, [email protected]), José María Tejedor Cabrera (Universidad de Sevilla, [email protected]), José Manuel Estévez Saá (Universidad da Coruña, [email protected]) To study the connections between a series of Irish women writers and Joyce implies doing justice to those among them who were ahead of their time on a formal level or as regards the content of their works, in spite of the fact that critics have not always recognised this, due to some prejudices and critical stances which are erroneous in our opinion, namely the unfounded consideration that Irish women writers have opted for conservative non-experimental forms and have dealt with the private sphere of experience (O’Faolain 1885; Patten 1990). In the case of those Irish women writers who came after Joyce, little has been done with regards to a fair assessment of their formal and thematic contribution to the history of Irish literature, and comparisons with the Irish genius have been avoided, probably due to the late critical appraisal of their contribution to Irish literature (basically from the 1990s onwards) and, above all, because of the still on-going debate that separates critics who see Joyce as a misogynistic author from others who signal his interest for gender studies and go as far as to interpret his aesthetics as representative of “écriture feminine”.

Duke 3 Abstract This thesis examines the impact of the Celtic Tiger on the configuration of Ireland’s identity in three novels written after its collapse, Anne Enright’s The Green Road (2015), Sally Rooney’s Conversations with Friends (2017) and Caoilinn Hughes Orchid and the Wasp (2018). The Celtic Tiger refers an economic boom that occurred in Ireland between 1995- 2008. This was the first time, since becoming independent, that the Irish economy underwent a period of sustained economic success and thus the Celtic Tiger became a period of social and cultural change. No longer imprisoned by its past, the Celtic Tiger meant that Ireland’s sense of self became closely linked to the neo-liberal economic model that enabled the Celtic Tiger.
