A Relentless Quest for a Paradoxical Normality: Sally Rooney’s Normal People Mantığa Aykırı Bir Normalliğin Peşinde Amansız Bir Arayış: Sally Rooney’nin Normal People Romanı Merve Sarıkaya-Şen Başkent University, Turkey Abstract Sally Rooney’s Normal People (2018) documents the complex, unstable, but, at the same time, passionate relationship between two young and intelligent individuals, Marianne Sheridan and Connell Waldron, from 2011 to 2015. While their stormy relationship goes through various separations and reattachments, Marianne follows a paradoxical quest to deal with her psychological wounds stemming from family violence and abuse in her childhood; she chooses to remain silent and adopts masochistic sexual practices. Accordingly, this study will first explore how Marianne’s silence serves as a means of dealing with emotional and physical violence. It will then move onto analyse how Marianne’s harrowing past of violence and abuse pushes her to adopt masochistic sexual practices that give her some relief even if temporarily. By demonstrating that Marianne’s self-definition by keeping loyal to her wounds is a quest that can be defined as a paradoxical normality, this study will draw attention to one of the most important problems of our age; violence against women and their coping strategies to deal with violence. The 10th Annual FRANK O’CONNOR INTERNATIONAL SHORT STORY FESTIVAL 2009 elcome. Cork is the place to come for the world’s oldest, annual, dedicated, short story festival now in its tenth year. In Cork we have a special love of the short story because of our city and county’s association with W so many masters of the form including Daniel Corkery, Sean O’Faolain, Frank O’Connor, Elizabeth Bowen and William Trevor. The Munster Literature Centre, with the crucial help of funding from Cork City Council is delighted to be able to raise our city’s profile in the world through this festival and also through the annual Cork City-Frank O’Connor Short Story Award, the richest literary prize for the form which is now in its fifth year. Since the festival began we have featured modern masters from at home and abroad including the likes of Segun Afolabi, Cónal Creedon, Nisha da Cunha, Anne Enright, Richard Ford, Alasdair Gray, Bret Anthony Johnston, Miranda July, Claire Keegan, Etgar Keret, Jhumpa Lahiri, James Lasdun, Mary Leland, Eugene Mc- Cabe, Mike McCormick, Bernard MacLaverty, David Marcus, David Means, Rebecca Miller, Rick Moody, Eilis Ní Dhuibhne, Julia O’Faolain, James Plunkett, Dan Rhodes, Ludmila Ulitskaya, Samrat Upadhyay, William Wall, Yiyun Li Wang Zhousheng and many others. This year, we have five continents represented in our international lineup. We welcome back writers who have appeared before, not only former O’Connor Award shortlistees such as Grimshaw and O Ceallaigh, but writers such as Titley and Doyle who participated in our very first festival in 2000. -

Melissa took our photograph outside, with Bobbi smoking and me self-consciously holding my left wrist in my right hand, as if I was afraid the wrist was going to get away from me. Melissa used a big professional camera and kept lots of different lenses in a special camera pouch. She chatted and smoked while taking the pictures. She talked about our performance and we talked about her work, which we’d come across on the internet. Around midnight the bar closed. It was starting to rain then, and Melissa told us we were welcome to come back to her house for a drink. We all got into the back of a taxi together and started fixing up our seat belts. Bobbi sat in the middle, with her head turned to speak to Melissa, so I could see the back of her neck and her little spoon-like ear. Melissa gave the driver an address in Monkstown and I turned to look out the window. A voice came on the radio to say the words: eighties … pop … classics. -

An Irish Problem Sally Rooney writes about the abortion referendum London Review of Books, Vol. 40 No. 10, 24 May 2018 In 1983, a referendum was held in Ireland to establish a constitutional right to life for embryos and foetuses. Abortion was not legal in Ireland at the time; it never has been. The referendum was the result of a campaign by conservative religious groups aimed at preventing any future legislation permitting abortion in any but the most extreme, life- threatening circumstances. The Eighth Amendment passed, gaining 67 per cent of the vote. On 25 May, another referendum will be held on whether to repeal that amendment. This one won’t pass so easily – if it passes at all. So far the campaign has been distinguished by acrimony, falsehoods and a media obsession with ‘balance’ – an insistence that both sides must be given equal respect and consideration. Though campaign funding is strictly regulated by Irish law, there are questions about how effectively these regulations are being enforced, and in particular about the ‘No’ campaign’s links to anti-abortion organisations in the US. A group calling itself the Irish Centre for Bio-Ethical Reform, made up largely of American volunteers, has attracted media attention by protesting outside maternity hospitals in Dublin with banners showing dismembered foetuses. The group is connected to a US organisation called the Centre for Bio-Ethical Reform, whose leader, Gregg Cunningham, visited Ireland in January. Across the country, ‘Save the Eighth’ posters depict gigantic, robust babies, as if the referendum concerned the health of six-month-old infants. -

Anthony Halpen, The Institute of Irish Studies, The University of Liverpool. This thesis considers the novel and the short story in the decades following the achievement of Irish independence from Britain in 1922. During these years, many Irish practitioners of the short story achieved both national and international acclaim, such that 'the Irish Short Story' was recognised as virtually a discrete genre. Writers and critics debated why Irish fiction-writers could have such success in the short story, but not similar success with their novels. Henry James had noticed a similar situation in the United States of America in the early nineteenth century. James decided the problem was that America's society was still forming - that the society was too 'thin' to support successful novel-writing. Irish writers and critics applied his arguments to the newly-independent Ireland, concluding that Irish society was indeed the explanation. Irish society was depicted as so unstructured and fragmented that it was inimical to the novel but nurtured the short story. Ireland was described variously: "broken and insecure" (Colm Tóibín), "often bigoted, cowardly, philistine and spiritually crippled" (John McGahern) and marked by "inward-looking stagnation" (Dermot Bolger). -

IASIL 2012 – BOOK OF ABSTRACTS 1A THE FRACTURED FAMILY, FATHERHOOD, AND MASCULINITY IN IRISH LITERATURE AND CULTURE CHAIR: JANE MCGAUGHEY SHEILA MCAVEY (Becker College) Fractured Irish Masculinity Britain’s Matrimonial Causes Act of 1857, which allowed for divorce actions to proceed in civil rather than canon courts, broke open the cultural monument of the staid Victorian marriage. Yet, the public recognition of unhappy marriages did not remove the element of scandal that attached to the standing of those who sought or were a party to divorce, or to an Irish husband whose masculinity might be put to question in publicity about a divorce. This paper looks at Lever’s depiction of various forms of uneasy masculinity in Davenport Dunn, Sir Brook Fossbrooke, and The Bramleighs of Bishop’s Folly, novels written in the decade following the Matrimonial Causes Act. In these works, this threat to the once-solid male bastion of marriage seemed to heighten anxiety about masculinity, and Lever’s portraits of corrupt Anglo- Irish marital unions, alongside the absurd posturings of aging males in Sir Brooke Fossbrooke and The Bramleighs of Bishop's Folly offer a sharply realistic assessment of the fractured surface of urban Irish life at a particularly unsettling moment. Sheila McAvey has taught literature and related courses in the Humanities Department at Becker since fall 1992. Prior to Becker, she was an editor at the American Antiquarian Society, in Worcester, MA. Her research interests include issues of female desire, divorce, and Irish masculinity in the works of the Anglo-Irish novelist Charles Lever. She has also been active in her college’s strategic plans for incorporating sensitivity to global issues and social responsibility at Becker College, and has recently attended conferences at the Aspen Institute and the American Association of Colleges and Universities.
