    Alec Vidler On Christian Faith and Secular Despair Born in Rye, Sussex, son of a shipping businessman, Alec Vidler ( 1899‐1991)was educated at Sutton Valence School, Kent, read theology at Selwyn College, Cambridge (B.A. 1921),then trained for the Anglican ministry at Wells Theological College. He disliked Wells and transferred to the Oratory of the Good Shepherd, Cambridge, an Anglo‐Catholic community of celibates, and was ordained priest in 1923. He retained a life‐time affection for the celibate monkish life, never marrying but having a wide range of friends, including Malcolm Muggeridge, who was at Selwyn with him. Muggeridge’s father was a prominent Labourite and Vidler imbibed leftist sympathies in that circle. His first curacy was in Newcastle, working in the slums. He soon came to love his work with working class parishioners and was reluctantly transferred to St Aidan’s Birmingham, where he became involved in a celebrated stoush with the bishop E. W. Barnes, himself a controversialist of note. Vidler’s Anglo‐ Catholic approach to ritual clashed with Barnes’s evangelicalism. Vidler began a prolific career of publication in the 1920s and 30s. In 1931 he joined friends like Wilfred Ward at the Oratory House in Cambridge, steeping himself in religious history and theology, including that of Reinhold Niebuhr and “liberal Catholicism”. In 1939 Vidler became warden of St Deiniol’s Library, Hawarden (founded by a legacy from Gladstone) and also editor of the leading Anglican journal Theology, which he ran until 1964, exerting considerable progressive influence across those years. He also facilitated a number of religious think‐tanks in these, and later, years.

Our aim is to give you a taste of our Christian Mission through an understanding of our two parishes and their churches. This parish profile brings together two individual yet adjoining parishes on the western fringe of Darlington. It covers the parishes of Blackwell, All Saints’ and Salutation and Coniscliffe, which comprises St Edwin’s and St Mary’s churches. The vacancy has arisen following the departure of our previous Vicar, David Railton, to a new post in the west of Scotland. We are now seeking to appoint a new Vicar to serve both parishes, the two benefices being held in plurality. Whilst each parish has its own individual characteristics, the congregations have much in common.     The Benefice Profile of Yarm with Kirklevington, Picton and Worsall St Mary Magdalene, Yarm Aerial photographs taken by Harry Brown All Saints, Worsall A message from the Rt Revd Paul Ferguson, Bishop of Whitby Welcome, and thank you for your interest in the post of Rector of Yarm with Kirklevington, Picton and Worsall. This post offers exciting possibilities for ministry in a varied town-and-country setting. As you will read in these pages, this is a benefice of two parishes comprising the market town of Yarm and a group of nearby villages. This relatively new grouping was formed under the leadership of the previous Rector, Canon John Ford, who was also Area Dean and who retired in 2020. The communities are conscious of their very long history — Yarm is an ancient fording place over the River Tees, and the villages have been the source of a wealth of Saxon and Anglo-Danish archaeology — but they are not in any sense locked into the past. Retail and education are key to their economy and culture; rural industry still has a significant part to play, and there is extensive new house-building and an increasing population. The new Rector will find a secure foundation to build on, willing and able lay leaders, and a shared commitment to worship well planned and led in a generally liberal Catholic style. Although there is mention in this profile of concern that congregations are ageing, in fact there is more involvement with families and younger people, and with external institutions, than would be found in many other places.

    Diocesan Records The Diocese is the administrative area ruled over by the Bishop of Oxford. Below him is an Archdeacon for each Archdeaconry within the Diocese, the Rural Dean for each Deanery (a group of parishes within an Archdeaconry), and the vicar, rector or curate for each parish or joint benefice (linked group of parishes). The Diocesan Records are the administrative records of the Bishop, created in the running of the Diocese. Oxford Diocese was formed in 1542, when the Archdeaconry of Oxford was split away from the huge Diocese of Lincoln. This did not please the Archdeacon of Oxford, who had been accustomed to a great deal of autonomy and now had a Bishop giving him orders. However, fate played into his hands; for 44 of the first 47 years of the Diocese there was no Bishop, and successive Archdeacons took on his duties. This led to considerable confusion in the records; Bishops and Archdeacons used the same officials and clerks, these often wrote affairs pertaining to their masters in the wrong books, and sometimes it can be difficult to tell which records belong to the Bishop (the Diocesan records) and which to the Archdeacon (the Archdeaconry records). Demarcation was finally agreed in the Court of Arches after the Civil War and Interregnum. Until 1836, Oxford Diocese consisted of the single Archdeaconry; only then was the Archdeaconry of Berkshire added, transferred from the Diocese of Salisbury. An attempt was immediately made to add the Archdeaconry of Buckingham from Lincoln Diocese, but Bishop Bagot objected and the transfer finally took place under Bishop Wilberforce in 1845.
