GRay Australian Museum, 6 College Street, Sydney NSW 2010, Australia [email protected] abstRact. The Australian funnel-web spiders of the subfamily Atracinae are revised. The Atracinae are divided into three genera—Atrax O.P.-Cambridge with three species (two new), Hadronyche L. Koch with 31 species (18 new), and Illawarra n.gen. with one new species. Hadronyche is divided into four species groups—the lamingtonensis, adelaidensis, infensa and cerberea groups. Fourteen previously described species are redescribed or diagnosed. Twenty one new species are described: Atrax sutherlandi n.sp., A. yorkmainorum n.sp., Illawarra wisharti n.sp., Hadronyche alpina n.sp., H. emmalizae n.sp., H. marracoonda n.sp., H. monaro n.sp., H. tambo n.sp., H. nimoola n.sp., H. mascordi n.sp., H. jensenae n.sp., H. orana n.sp., H. lynabrae n.sp., H. kaputarensis n.sp., H. levittgreggae n.sp., H. macquariensis n.sp., H. walkeri n.sp., H. raveni n.sp., H. lamingtonensis n.sp., H. annachristiae n.sp. and H. monteithi n.sp.     Dr Ian Mansergh, Dr Alan Newsome and Dr David Shorthouse Summary This report was commissioned by New South Wales (NSW) National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) as part of the brief to the Independent Scientific Committee (ISC) to examine the scientific significance and condition of attributes of the Kosciuszko National Park. The park’s diverse habitats support populations of about 300 native terrestrial (non-aquatic) vertebrate species - mostly Australian endemics - and an unknown number of invertebrate species. The Kosciuszko faunal assemblage is of national significance, and it makes a major contribution to an internationally significant environmental region that includes the adjacent Alpine National Park in Victoria and Namadgi National Park in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT). Contribution to international significance · The total vertebrate biodiversity of Kosciuszko National Park compares very well with other (large) temperate montane/alpine national parks in North and South America, and is significant for the presence of representatives of all subclasses and infraclasses of mammals (Monotremata, Marsupialia and Eutheria). The high diversity of reptile species, especially above the snowline, is also notable. · Thirteen vertebrate taxa with populations in the park are listed as threatened or near threatened by the World Conservation Union (IUCN). · The international significance of the mountain pygmy-possum Burramys parvus and a variety of other features lends strength to the acceptance of the area under World Heritage criterion (i). If invertebrates - poorly known at present - are considered, criterion (iii), perhaps criterion (i), and the biodiversity representation aspects of (iv) would be met or exceeded. · Some long-term studies in the park are internationally important in helping to resolve global scientific-conservation questions, and the park is well placed to assist the international investigations into greenhouse climate change and its effects on biodiversity.

    Changes to Driver Licence Sanctions in Your CLSD Region In 2020, Revenue NSW introduced a hardship program focused on First Nations people and young people. As a result, the use of driver licence sanctions for overdue fine debt changed on Monday 28th September 2020 in some locations. How are overdue fines and driver licence sanctions related? If a person has overdue fines, their driver licence may be suspended. The driver licence suspension may be removed if the person: • pays a lump sum to Revenue NSW, or • enters a payment plan with Revenue NSW, or • is approved for a WDO. A driver licence suspension can be applied for multiple reasons, so even after being told that a driver licence suspension for unpaid fines has been removed, people should always double check that it is OK to drive by contacting Service NSW. Driver licence restrictions can also be put on interstate licences and cannot be removed easily. If you have a client in this situation, they should get legal advice. What has changed? Now, driver licence sanctions will not be imposed as a first response to unpaid fines for enforcement orders that were issued on or after 28 September 2020 to First Nations people and young people who live in the target locations. What are the target locations? Locations that the Australian Bureau of Statistics classifies as: • very remote, • remote • outer regional, and • Inner regional post codes where at least 9% of the population are First Nations People. Included target locations on the South Coast are the towns of Batemans Bay, Bega, Bodalla, Eden, Eurobodalla, Mogo, Narooma, Nowra Hill, Nowra Naval PO, Merimbula, Pambula, Tilba and Wallaga Lake.

    - 1 - INTRODUCTION A Sense of Place in Twentieth-Century Australian Life Writing In recent years, at both popular and academic levels, there has been increased talk about an Australian national identity. Events at home and abroad have sparked discussion about what it means to be “Australian”, and Australia’s role in world affairs. Such debates inevitably turn to a reassessment of traditional attributes of the “Australian character”, highlighted a few years ago by the controversy over the proposed insertion of the value of “mateship” into the preamble to the Australian constitution. For all this talk about national character and values, it is often forgotten that, on a more personal level, any identification with a nation or homeland must also involve a sense of place. What makes any of us Australian? Surely at bottom this has to begin with our dwelling in, having origins in, and retaining a continuing connection to this land mass we now call Australia. But what are the hallmarks of an Australian’s sense of place? How is it formed, nurtured and sustained? Does one’s sense of place change or alter depending on what part of Australia one lives in? As Simon Schama says in the introduction to his extensive study, Landscape and Memory, “it is our shaping perception that makes the difference between raw matter and landscape”.1 So, too, our sense of place comes not merely from the physical landforms we inhabit but also from within us, our mode of viewing, which is informed by culture and history. This thesis explores the sense of place formed during childhood, as remembered by adult Australians who reconstruct their youth through various forms of life writing.

TAYLORf Department of Zoology, University of Canterbury, Private Bag, Christchurch, New Zealand Accepted 15 May 1986 SUMMARY The spider, Porrhothele antipodiana, starved and provided with water, produced urine via the anal excretory system (Malpighian tubules, midgut diverticula and stercoral pocket) at a mean rate of about 2-5-5//I g"1 day"1 and with a mean Na+/K+ ratio of about 1-0. Salts ingested from the prey were eliminated by two mechanisms. A K+-rich (Na+/K+ about 0-2) anal diuresis lasted about 3 days following a single meal and was maintained at more than SO^lg^'day"1 during feeding ad libitum. The second mechanism, interpreted as coxal secretion, func- tioned only during feeding itself and delivered Na+ into the prey at a constant rate of about 3 %h~' of total body Na+. This progressively raised the Na+/K+ ratio of the prey debris from 0-47 to 0-96 and, because of re-ingestion, recycled more Na+ than was originally present in the prey. Feeding was associated with large net increases in dry weight and ions, particularly K+, which were mainly stored in the diverticular tissue (midgut diverticula and Malpighian tubules embedded in adipose tissue). The stercoral fluid (final urine) was slightly hyposmotic to the haemolymph in starved and fed spiders. Only about half of its osmolarity was accounted for by Na+, K+ and Cl~.
