ALDHELM’S DE VIRGINITATE - FROM PATRISTIC BACKGROUND TO ANGLO-SAXON AUDIENCE ABSTRACT This thesis is a study of Aldhelm’s De Virginitate, considering its historical, social and literary background. De Virginitate was a paean to virginity in prose and verse. Although Aldhelm’s obtuse Latin makes it a difficult to understand, it was one of the most influential texts in Anglo-Saxon England, and vital in understanding the development of ecclesiastical influence in the period. This study discusses the development of a discourse of virginity from the Bible into late antiquity. It then considers the Aldhelm’s use of his source material, his adoption and adaptation of certain themes and tropes. Primarily using gender and queer theory to analyse Aldhelm’s text, it examines the way in which he constructed a performative virginity that would contain his addressed audience of nuns. Whilst commentators have discussed Aldhelm’s innovations in promoting chastity in deference to his audience, most of whom were not virgins, they have not fully considered the similarities between De Virginitate and Aldhelm’s source material. This thesis argues that despite Aldhelm’s innovation, De Virginitate is part of the movement within Anglo-Saxon England to constrain and enclose women within the monastic system. Throughout, Aldhelm stresses the need for female dependence on male ecclesiastical authority, and warns against independence and pride. Thus despite acknowledging the ontological status of his addressed audience as non-virginal, Aldhelm’s message is as orthodox as his late antique sources - female autonomy was dangerous to the individual and the community. Yet, by the later middle ages it had fallen out of favour, and only recently have scholars begun again to consider it in any detail.1 This thesis aims to place the construction of virginity and gender in De Virginitate in a literary, social and historical context. It takes an interdisciplinary approach, informed by literary and historical studies through the framework of gender and queer theory, specifically Judith Butler’s ideas of performativity and identity construction. This thesis will undertake a reading of De Virginitate that focuses on virginity and gender, how Aldhelm understands these concepts and presents them to his audience. De Virginitate is unique in many ways, but has not received the attention it merits, largely because of its obtuse Latin. In this thesis I hope to demonstrate why De Virginitate is so important to our understanding of the tensions surrounding both ideas about virginity and gender as they were formulated in early Christian Anglo-Saxon England, and the rise of a more patriarchal church, increasingly focused on female enclosure. Hence this thesis will focus on different aspects ofDe Virginitate using gender and queer theory, as they relate to these issues. It will begin with an outline of the historical and theoretical background that has informed my interpretation of De Virginitate, briefly reviewing Anglo-Saxon historiography as it particularly applies to the study of gender in history and literature. It will also offer a background to the theory deployed in analysing the text, and discuss why I have chosen this theoretical stance. This is necessary as Aldhelm is neither well-known nor easily accessible to many modem readers. In discussing the text itself, this thesis will outline the sources, imagery and ideas on which Aldhelm drew and from which he formulated his ideas about virginity and gender. De Virginitate particularly lends itself to such a study as it offers male as well as female examples of virginity, enabling a wider reading of virginity. This allows the student to compare the manner in which Aldhelm chooses to gender virginity, what qualities he considers as suitable for a female virgin, and whether they differ from those attributed to the male. In doing this it will also compare the differences between the late antique ideal of virginity and Aldhelm’s construction. I intend to look in depth at the prose and verse rendering of De Virginitate, particularly Aldhelm’s literary formation of a gendered Christian virginity. Thus this study will examine how Aldhelm differentiates between virginity and chastity, and uses implied gender differences to portray these qualities. Beginning with virginity itself as theorised by the Church Fathers, and subsequently re-interpreted by Aldhelm in deference to his audience, it will then consider gender and sanctity through the hagiographical element of the text, and finally the martial virginity of Aldhelm’s psychomachia. This thesis will also reflect on the importance of Aldhelm’s work

The collapse of Roman government in the western Roman empire in the late fifth century inspired a crisis of identity and political messaging in the eastern Roman empire of the same period. I argue that the Romans of the eastern empire, in particular those who lived in Constantinople and worked in or around the imperial administration, responded to the challenge posed by the loss of Rome by rewriting the history of the Roman empire. The new historical narratives that arose during this period were initially concerned with Roman identity and fixated on urban space (in particular the cities of Rome and Constantinople) and Roman mythistory. By the sixth century, however, the debate over Roman history had begun to infuse all levels of Roman political discourse and became a major component of the emperor Justinian’s imperial messaging and propaganda, especially in his Novels. The imperial history proposed by the Novels was aggressivley challenged by other writers of the period, creating a clear historical and political conflict over the role and import of Roman history as a model or justification for Roman politics in the sixth century.

Cornell University 2011 This dissertation, The ‘Bestli’ Outlaw: Wilderness and Exile in Old and Middle English Literature explores the reasons for the survival of the beast-like outlaw, a transgressive figure who highlights tensions in normative definitions of human and natural, which came to represent both the fears and the desires of a people in a state of constant negotiation with the land they inhabited. Although the outlaw’s shelter in the wilderness changed dramatically from the dense and menacing forests of Anglo-Saxon England to the bright, known, and mapped greenwood of the late outlaw romances and ballads, the outlaw remained strongly animalistic, other, and liminal, in strong contrast to premodern notions of what it meant to be human and civilized. I argue that outlaw narratives become particularly popular and poignant at moments of national political and ecological crisis—as they did during the Viking attacks of the Anglo-Saxon period, the epoch of intense natural change following the Norman Conquest, and the beginning of the market revolution at the end of the Middle Ages. Figures like the Anglo-Saxon resistance fighter Hereward, the exiled Marcher lord Fulk Fitz Waryn, and the brutal yet courtly Gamelyn and Robin Hood, represent a lost England imagined as pristine and forested.

Hardiman 2005 ABSTRACT This dissertation marks the first synthetic and contextual analysis of domestic sculpture for the whole of the Hellenistic period (323 BCE – 31 BCE). Prior to this study, Hellenistic domestic sculpture had been examined from a broadly literary perspective or had been the focus of smaller regional or site-specific studies. Rather than taking any one approach, this dissertation examines both the literary testimonia and the material record in order to develop as full a picture as possible for the location, function and meaning(s) of these pieces. The study begins with a reconsideration of the literary evidence. The testimonia deal chiefly with the residences of the Hellenistic kings and their conspicuous displays of wealth in the most public rooms in the home, namely courtyards and dining rooms. Following this, the material evidence from the Greek mainland and Asia Minor is considered. The general evidence supports the literary testimonia’s location for these sculptures. In addition, several individual examples offer insights into the sophistication of domestic decorative programs among the Greeks, something usually associated with the Romans.

However, a similar dynamic is also found in rivers, which thus prove to be formidable adversaries of Caesar in their own right. Although neither Pompey nor Cato is able to draw on the Caesarian formula successfully, Lucan eventually associates them with the river-derived variant, thus granting them a measure of resistance (if only in the non-physical realm). By tracing the development of the formula throughout the epic, the dissertation provides a deeper understanding of the importance of natural forces in Lucan’s poem as well as the presence of an underlying drive that unites its fractured world. One night, when he was helping to look after sheep he thought he saw angels taking a soul to heaven. A few days later he found out Saint Aidan had died. Cuthbert decided to become a monk. He became a monk at the monastery in Melrose where he met Boisil, the prior of the monastery. Boisil taught Cuthbert for 6 years. Before Boisil died, he told Cuthbert he would be a Bishop one day. Cuthbert liked to visit lonely farms and villages. Crowds of people came to visit him. He lived at Melrose monastery for 13 years. Cuthbert was sent to be Prior of Lindisfarne. Cuthbert taught the monks the new Roman church rules. Some of the monks did not like the new rules and Cuthbert had to be very patient with them. After 12 years, Cuthbert went to live on a quiet island 7 miles away from Lindisfarne. Cuthbert lived on this small island for 3 years. He grew barley and vegetables and his monks dug a well and built a guest house for visitors. The King asked Cuthbert to be Bishop of Hexham. Cuthbert didn’t want to but he still remembered what Boisil had said. Cuthbert did not want to be Bishop of Hexham but agreed to be Bishop of Lindisfarne instead. He was very sad to have to leave his small island. Cuthbert was Bishop of Lindisfarne for 2 years. The people loved him.

    TRUMPETS AND HORNS NATURAL TRUMPETS SHOFAR The shofar is an ancient Jewish liturgical instrument. It is a natural trumpet without a mouthpiece and produces only two tones, the second and third harmonics. The Talmud has laid down precise instructions for its maintenance and use, as well as materials and methods of construction. The shofar is usually made from ram's horn, although the horn of any animal of the sheep or goat family may be used. The horn is softened by heat and straightened. Subsequently, it is re-bent in one of several shapes (Plate 58). A blow-hole is bored into the pointed end of the horn. In the Northern European variety of shofar, the blow-hole usually has no distinct shape. In the Israeli and Southern European type, the mouthpiece is formed into a miniature trum- pet mouthpiece.
