#BlackBearNation 3 A LOOK AT QUINNIPIAC The Quinnipiac Bobcats return to the Cross Insurance Center for the first time since the 2015-16 season, as they’ve host- ed the last two matchups after playing Maine at the in Portland during the 2016-17 season. The Bobcats have posted a 3-4 record so far this season, coming into today fresh off a 75-67 victory over Maine-rival New Hampshire on the 7th of December their last time out. They’ve also picked up wins over UAlbany and Presbyterian so far this season, alongside losses to Brown, Miami, Sacred Heart, and Farleigh Dickinson.

Quinnipiac’s offense ranks second in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference at 73.0 points per game, behind a 44.5/35.3/74.1 shooting line that ranks in the top-three in the conference by all three measures. The team also ranks first in assist to turnover ratio at a 1.04 mark this year.

Their offensive prowess is due in large part to the conference’s leading scorer, Rich Kelly, who averages 17.4 points a contest on 44.7/44.4/75.0 shooting. He went off against UNH last time out for 36 points on 13-18 shooting from the floor. Kevin Marfo is the conference’s leading rebounder at a massive 12.7 per game (4.1 offensive, 8.6 defensive), also ranking as the second highest rebounding average in the nation, and Rich Kelly ranks third in the MAAC with 4.4 assists per game.

Baker Dunleavy, who was the associate head coach for a national-title winning team at Villanova in 2016, enters his third season as the head coach of the Quinnipiac men’s basketball program in 2019-20.

GRIT AND GRIND BASKETBALL Maine’s team profile is beginning to emerge here as we near the halfway point of the season, as evidenced by their standing in the conference team statistic rankings. They rank first in the America East and in the nation in assist to field goal percentage, registering an assist on 71.8% of their field goal makes this year. They also rank first in the conference in rebounds allowed (29.8) and fewest total fouls (159), third in 3-point field goal defense (30.3%) and in rebounding margin (+3.9), blocks per game (3.6), and assists per game (15.3).

LIVING UP TO THE HYPE After being the first Black bear since 2012 to be named Preseason All-Conference in America East, Andrew Fleming delivered the first chance he got, dominating the opener against Merrimack with 37 points, 10 rebounds, five assists, and two blocks in Maine’s 84-64 victory, playing all 40 minutes end-to-end. The 37 points were just one shy of his ca- reer-high, and he did it on a 66.6% mark from the field while going 13-15 from the free-throw line.

RARE AIR If all that wasn’t enough, Fleming also made history on opening night by becoming the 31st member of the Maine bas- ketball 1,000 career points club. He’s the first since Aaron Calixte, who achieved the feat during the 2017-18 season, and just the second since the 2011 season. He joins current assistant coach Kevin Reed in the club, who’s fourth all-time in program history with 1,601 career points. #BlackBearNation 4 INGO AIR CONTROL Redshirt freshman Stephane Ingo put up five blocks on December 1st against UConn, not only a career-high for the young Canadian, but the first time a Black Bear has reached five blocks in a single game since Mike Allison accomplished the feat on January 30th of 2013 against UNH.

INTERNATIONAL FLAVOR Maine features one of the youngest rosters in the America East this season with seven freshmen on their bench this year. Of those seven, six different nations are represented, as Maine features players from Canada, Denmark, Sweden, Serbia, Turkey, and the United States. Overall, Maine has representatives from ten different countries, with Lebanon, Latvia, Ukraine, and England being represented.

THEY GROW UP SO FAST With the construction of their roster and a few key injuries to upperclassmen, Maine has had to depend on some of their freshest faces to pick up the slack. Freshman Precious Okoh is one of just four Black bears to appear in all ten games and the only freshman to do so, logging an average of 17.0 minutes a game at the point guard position. Classmate Peter Stumer has seen his minutes load increase with each game, peaking in last Wednesday night’s tilt at Northeastern where he dropped in a career-high 12-points on a 4-8 day from three-point land along with four rebounds and a steal in a ca- reer-high 28 minutes. The aforementioned Stephane Ingo has also increased his court time game-to-game, averaging 12.3 minutes a game off the bench including 34 against UConn on December 1st.

TOP-TEN MEN Maine has a handful of players ranking in the top-ten of the America East conference in a few different categories, including; Scoring per game Blocks per game Minutes per game Andrew Fleming, 4th, 18.1 Stephane Ingo, 4th, 1.2 Fleming, 5th, 34.2 Field goal percentage Assists to turnover ratio Andrew Fleming, 2nd, 51.5 Miks Antoms, 2nd, 1.85 #BlackBearNation 5 including a run to the Sweet 16 in 2008-09; in the two seasons Barron was with the Bears’ staff. richard barron Barron began his Division I head coaching career at Princeton as he spent six seasons at the helm of the Tigers’ program.
