The exhibition has been programmed in partnership with DC Thomson to celebrate the 80th anniversary of The Broons and Oor Wullie. The invited artists, Rabiya Choudhry, Rob Churm, Craig Coulthard, Malcy Duff, Hideyuki Katsumata and Sofia Sita, have each visited the DC Thomson archives and are exhibiting their own individual takes on the rich cultural history of our city’s publishing. The exhibition features murals, prints, drawings, sculpture and video alongside archive material. ARTISTS IN THE EXHIBITION RABIYA CHOUDHRY Edinburgh-based artist Rabiya Choudhry’s work takes inspiration from childhood memories and subconscious dreams. She has created new work for the exhibition loosely based on her own family and inspired by DC Thomson’s riotous comic strip The Numskulls, about a team of tiny human-like technicians who live inside people’s heads and run their bodies and minds. Choudhry’s own comic creation, The Coconuts, is the basis for a new pair of paintings in homage to The Numskulls. The paintings are titled dream baby dream and houses for the holy, in reference to songs by the bands Suicide and Led Zeppelin respectively.

SUPERGIRLS AND WONDER WOMEN: FEMALE REPRESENTATION IN WARTIME COMIC BOOKS by Skyler E. Marker A Master's paper submitted to the faculty of the School of Information and Library Science of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science in Library Science. Chapel Hill, North Carolina May, 2017 Approved by: ________________________ Rebecca Vargha Skyler E. Marker. Supergirls and Wonder Women: Female Representation in Wartime Comics. A Master's paper for the M.S. in L.S. degree. May, 2017. 70 pages. Advisor: Rebecca Vargha This paper analyzes the representation of women in wartime era comics during World War Two (1941-1945) and Operation Iraqi Freedom (2001-2010). The questions addressed are: In what ways are women represented in WWII era comic books? What ways are they represented in Post 9/11 comic books? How are the representations similar or different? In what ways did the outside war environment influence the depiction of women in these comic books? In what ways did the comic books influence the women in the war outside the comic pages? This research will closely examine two vital periods in the publications of comic books. The World War II era includes the genesis and development to the first war-themed comics. In addition many classic comic characters were introduced during this time period. In the post-9/11 and Operation Iraqi Freedom time period war-themed comics reemerged as the dominant format of comics. FOREWORD ERHAPS the ejaculation best remembered by the 1942-1943 Oracle Staff P will be: "But thi is war!" Despite limitations, priorities, and cuts, the board has managed to put out consistently improved issues. Evermindful of its obligation as representative and biographer of the School, the Oracle has tried to mirror back the students to themselves and to record faithfully their activities. Increasingly favorable com ments from the National Scholastic Press Association and from other sources have encouraged the efforts of the staff. An original assembly play was a lively lead for the fall subscription campaign which was highly successful in spite of decreased enrollment. That this is war has been especi~ lly evident in the shifted schedule, the short ened meetings, the doubled duties of the staff members Students with the will and ability to produce ideas and material for the Oracle simply have not. had the time. Or when there has been tin1e and talent, they have not been utilized be cause of wartime restrictions on printers' and engravers' equipment.

The Eighth International Graphic Novel, Comics Conference and Bandes Dessinées Society Conference Borders- Identity, Difference and Representation Monday 26th to Friday 30th June 2017 University of Dundee & University of Glasgow Welcome to Scotland! We have chosen the theme of borders this year. The border distinguishes one space or concept from another whether geopolitical, physical, psychological, ideological or temporal. As such it is a potent phenomenon in contemporary culture where invasion, contestation and negotiation of borders signal inclusion/exclusion or conflict. Geopolitical borders might deal with the imaginary lines on the map that distinguish one territory from another; immigration; citizenship; national and regional borders; sites of ownership; the topography of a space that can inhibit or prohibit; and the marks on the landscape made to claim one territory from another. Temporal borders include the construction of history through historical categories such as the Golden Age or the Silver Age, or the annotation of time in the comics medium. Conceptually and aesthetically one can also explore the border on the comics page, through the variable or imaginary lines that define panels or the page. Narratively speaking, comics blur borders, including genre, such as the constant evolution of the superhero. The medium also plays with the borders between modes of expression, as sound becomes visible; words become drawn; and the material becomes digital. In turn, we can ask whether there are borders between the terms ‘comic’, ‘graphic novel’, ‘sequential art’, ‘manga’, or ‘bande dessinée’? The body too has its borders: the inside and outside; gendered and racial identities; human versus animal or machine; dead versus alive.
