Martin Denny and the Sounds of Exotica This in an updated version of an article originally published in Film Score Monthly (Vol. 2, No. 4, June 1997). A look at the unique circumstances of Forbidden Island. The mysteries of the tropics await! by Kerry J. Byrnes, Okemos High Class of 1963 Some twenty years ago John Bender=s article (“First Dive...Into the Dark Pool of ‘Soundtrack Related’”) published in Film Score Monthly (FSM#69) prompted me to pick up the I, Swinger CD by the musical group Combustible Edison, especially as Bender had referred to the CD as a “knock off” of a number of musicians, including Martin Denny, one of my all-time favorites. But I was most intrigued by Bender’s statement that Denny had “even managed to get one film score under his belt.” Bender=s next sentence added the needed clarification: “Let’s hope Denny=s music for Forbidden Island isn’t as hopelessly lost as the film itself seems to be.” But Forbidden Island, as later clarified, is not lost (though not yet commercially available on DVD). Produced by C.B. Griffith in 1959, Forbidden Island was shown on cable’s TNT in August of 1992 as part of a package of films TNT licensed from Columbia, now owned by Sony (film not included in the current package of newer films Sony has licensed to TNT). Fortunately, a video of TNT’s screening of Forbidden Island was preserved by none other than the Maestro of Exotica – Martin Denny – who kindly loaned his copy so I could make a dub. -

Great Instrumental
I grew up during the heyday of pop instrumental music in the 1950s and the 1960s (there were 30 instrumental hits in the Top 40 in 1961), and I would listen to the radio faithfully for the 30 seconds before the hourly news when they would play instrumentals (however the first 45’s I bought were vocals: Bimbo by Jim Reeves in 1954, The Ballad of Davy Crockett with the flip side Farewell by Fess Parker in 1955, and Sixteen Tons by Tennessee Ernie Ford in 1956). I also listened to my Dad’s 78s, and my favorite song of those was Raymond Scott’s Powerhouse from 1937 (which was often heard in Warner Bros. cartoons). and to records that my friends had, and that their parents had - artists such as: (This is not meant to be a complete or definitive list of the music of these artists, or a definitive list of instrumental artists – rather it is just a list of many of the instrumental songs I heard and loved when I was growing up - therefore this list just goes up to the early 1970s): Floyd Cramer (Last Date and On the Rebound and Let’s Go and Hot Pepper and Flip Flop & Bob and The First Hurt and Fancy Pants and Shrum and All Keyed Up and San Antonio Rose and [These Are] The Young Years and What’d I Say and Java and How High the Moon), The Ventures (Walk Don't Run and Walk Don’t Run ‘64 and Perfidia and Ram-Bunk-Shush and Diamond Head and The Cruel Sea and Hawaii Five-O and Oh Pretty Woman and Go and Pedal Pusher and Tall Cool One and Slaughter on Tenth Avenue), Booker T. -

Th is summer was no exception! Fift een of our esteemed alumni taught nearly Symphony Program 150 students in our Summer Strings and Pacifi c Music Institute programs. Winter Concerts YSI, YSII, CO omprised of two classes (Beginning and Intermediate), Sun., December 1, 4:00 pm C Summer Strings—which met daily for fi ve weeks—helped novice Blaisdell Concert Hall string students build skills and practice techniques that will last them their musical lives. Th e program was held at the Atherton YMCA, where HYS Listen & Learn Concerts alumnus Tony Yee is Executive Director. Conductor Chad Uyehara, who YSI &YSII also conducts HYS’s top two Academy string orchestras, remarked on the Mon., Dec. 2, & Tues, Dec. 3 importance of these summer classes. “Not only are we cultivating basic skills Blaisdell Concert Hall like how to play the instrument, but we also learn how to play in a group, follow the conductor; how to listen to each other, and how to be aware of the CO ensemble and ourselves.” Uyehara was impressed with the students’ hard Mon., December 9 work. -

Philip Mann, Music Director and Conductor of the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra grew up in Durango, Colorado. He attended school on an Indian reservation and lived on a ranch with horses and dogs in the mountains. He started playing the violin at age 5 and the bassoon at age 12 and loved music as a child, but didn’t always like to practice (now he is glad he did). Mr. Mann studied engineering, political science and physics in college, but then decided to make music his life. Mr. Mann chose to learn how to conduct because his step-father was a conductor and teacher. He participated in the Hot Springs Music Festival in 2006 and loves Hot Springs and Little Rock! He enjoys fly-fishing, hiking, reading and playing and watching sports. -
